The disruption began at about 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time and mainly prevented shoppers from completing checkout. Amazon later said the problem had been resolved and was caused by a software-code deployment—not an AWS outage.
This is a completed incident, not a current live outage. If you are checking because an order or payment was affected, the safest approach is to verify the order and your bank or card account before trying to buy again.
What happened during the Amazon outage
The failure was concentrated in Amazon’s shopping operation. Many users could still open Amazon or browse parts of the catalog, but key features failed once they tried to buy something.
| Reported problem | What shoppers experienced |
|---|---|
| Checkout | Purchases would not complete, or checkout returned an error. |
| Payments | Customers could not confirm payments, change payment methods, or in some cases finish an order. |
| Gift cards | Users reported difficulty adding gift-card balances. |
| Product information | Some product pages failed to load, and prices were missing from some listings. |
| Account features | Reviews, order histories, and order tracking were inaccessible for some users. |
| Apps and grocery services | The Amazon app crashed or failed at checkout for some customers. Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods ordering were also reported as affected. |
Some customers saw Amazon’s familiar “dog” error page or a generic error message. The fact that browsing worked for some users did not mean that checkout—or the order itself—was working normally.

Timeline: March 5, 2026
- About 2:00 p.m. ET: Reports of Amazon.com and app problems began to increase.
- During the afternoon: Checkout failures became the dominant complaint. Other users reported missing prices, inaccessible reviews and order histories, broken tracking, and problems with Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods orders.
- Peak reporting: Downdetector recorded roughly 22,000 user reports in the United States. That number represents submissions by users, not a precise count of affected customers.
- By 8:16 p.m. ET: Downdetector reports had dropped below 650, indicating that the disruption had eased substantially.
- After resolution: Amazon said the website and app were running smoothly and attributed the incident to a software-code deployment.
Was Amazon completely down?
No. “Amazon was down” is a useful shorthand, but the evidence points to a retail-site and app outage rather than a collapse of every Amazon service. Availability varied by account, feature, location, and time. One person might browse a product while another could not load the same page or reach payment confirmation.
There is also no basis for describing this event as an AWS outage. Amazon later said that the recent Amazon.com incidents under discussion were limited to its retail-store infrastructure and did not involve AWS. Reports about damage at data centers in Bahrain or the United Arab Emirates were not established as the cause of the March 5 retail disruption.
What to do if you clicked “Place your order”
An error page does not always tell you whether a request reached the retailer’s order system. Before placing the order again, check whether the first attempt created an order or a temporary authorization.

- Open Your Orders. On Amazon’s website, select Returns & Orders from the account menu. In the app, open the account area and select Your Orders.
- Look for an order confirmation. Check the order list and the email address associated with the account. Do not rely only on the browser’s final error message.
- Check the payment account. Look for a pending authorization, not just a completed transaction. A pending card hold can appear even when an order was not successfully created.
- Wait before retrying. If there is a pending charge or the order status is unclear, repeated attempts can create multiple authorizations or duplicate orders.
- Contact Amazon if money was taken without an order. Keep the date, approximate time, amount, payment method, and any error message. If a charge ultimately posts and Amazon cannot explain it, contact the card issuer or bank.
Do not treat a pending authorization as proof that you were charged permanently. Card issuers commonly remove unsuccessful transaction holds, but the timing depends on the issuer and payment method.

During the outage, some shoppers could not add gift-card balances or change their payment method. If a gift-card claim appeared to fail, first check the gift-card balance and account activity before entering the code again. Repeatedly applying the same code can make it harder to determine whether the balance was added successfully.
For a failed payment-method update, confirm the card details and billing address only after Amazon’s account pages are working normally. If a replacement card was added during the incident, remove any duplicate or outdated payment method after confirming that no active order depends on it.

How to tell whether the problem is Amazon or your connection
Not every error during a large outage is caused by the same thing. These checks can separate a local problem from a broader service failure:
- Try both the Amazon app and
amazon.comin a browser. - Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Check whether unrelated sites load normally.
- Use Downdetector as an indicator of report volume, not as an official uptime measurement.
- Avoid repeatedly clearing data, reinstalling the app, or changing payment details while Amazon’s account and checkout systems are unstable.
If only one device fails, updating the app or signing out and back in may help. If browsing works across devices but checkout, order history, and payments fail together, the issue is more likely on Amazon’s side.
What the outage did—and did not—show about Amazon
The incident demonstrated why a retailer can remain partly usable while its most financially important function is unavailable. Product discovery, account pages, inventory, payment authorization, gift-card services, and order creation do not necessarily fail at the same time. A working product page is therefore not confirmation that an order can be safely placed.

It also does not support claims that AI-written code caused the outage. Amazon later disputed that explanation, saying only one of the incidents discussed in its clarification involved AI-assisted tooling and that none involved AI-written code. The confirmed explanation for the March 5 event was a software-code deployment.
For shoppers, the practical lesson is straightforward: when a purchase fails during a service outage, verify the order record and the payment account before retrying. That is more reliable than assuming either that no transaction happened or that every pending authorization is a completed charge.

FAQ
When was the Amazon outage?
The major incident covered here began at approximately 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, March 5, 2026, and eased later that evening. It was not a current outage.
Why couldn’t I check out on Amazon?
Amazon said the incident was related to a software-code deployment. Checkout was the main failure, although product pages, prices, reviews, order histories, tracking, gift-card functions, and some grocery ordering also malfunctioned for users.
Was the Amazon outage caused by AWS?
No confirmed evidence supports that description. Amazon later said the relevant website and app incidents were limited to its retail-store infrastructure and did not involve AWS.
Could I have been charged if Amazon showed an error?
Possibly, a payment account may show a temporary authorization even when an order was not completed. Check Your Orders and your bank or card account before trying again. A pending authorization is not necessarily a final charge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Did AI-written code cause the Amazon outage?
Amazon disputed that claim. It said one incident involved AI-assisted tooling, but none of the incidents in its clarification involved AI-written code. The stated cause of the March 5 outage was a software-code deployment.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon’s shopping website and app suffered a substantial but temporary retail outage on March 5, 2026, with checkout as the main failure. It was not confirmed as an AWS outage, and Amazon did not say AI-written code caused it. If you attempted a purchase, check Returns & Orders and your payment account before retrying so you do not create a duplicate order or unnecessary authorization.
