Amazon crossed the one-million mark for direct U.S. employees by the end of 2021. A February 9, 2022, analysis of Amazon’s state-level employment data estimated the company’s U.S. workforce at roughly 1.1 million, up from approximately 935,000 a year earlier. This is a historical milestone—not a verified statement of Amazon’s U.S. headcount in 2026.
What the 1 million figure means
The estimate covers people directly employed by Amazon in the United States. It does not represent everyone whose work was connected to Amazon, and it was not presented as a separately reported U.S. total in Amazon’s global earnings release.

Instead, GeekWire calculated the total from employment figures Amazon published through its “Investing in the U.S.” state-by-state data. That calculation produced an estimate of approximately 1.1 million direct U.S. employees at the end of 2021.

| Measure | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Direct U.S. employees, end of 2021 | Approximately 1.1 million |
| Direct U.S. employees one year earlier | Approximately 935,000 |
| Estimated year-over-year increase | About 18% |
| Amazon employees worldwide, end of 2021 | More than 1.6 million |
Because the U.S. number was derived from state-level figures, it is more accurate to describe it as an estimated or calculated total than as an official standalone announcement that Amazon had exactly 1.1 million U.S. employees.

Why Amazon’s U.S. workforce grew so quickly
The increase reflected Amazon’s rapid expansion during the pandemic-era surge in online shopping. The company added capacity across its fulfillment-center, warehouse, transportation, and delivery network as demand for home delivery remained unusually high during 2020 and 2021.
Operations and distribution were central to the growth, but the total was not made up exclusively of warehouse workers. Amazon’s direct workforce also included employees in technology, corporate functions, customer service, transportation, and other roles.
The expansion came with significant financial pressure. Amazon said its fourth-quarter 2021 costs were about $4 billion higher than normal, citing labor expenses, supply-chain constraints, and inflation. The million-worker milestone therefore represented both increased operating capacity and a period of sharply rising costs.

Where Amazon’s employees were located
Amazon’s employment footprint was spread across nearly the entire country by the end of 2021. The state-level figures also showed that its traditional concentration in Washington had changed as fulfillment and logistics operations expanded elsewhere.
| State | Approximate Amazon employees | Notable change |
|---|---|---|
| California | 170,000 | Up about 11% year over year; the largest state employment base |
| Texas | 95,000 | Up about 36%; surpassed Washington |
| Washington | 85,000 | Formerly Amazon’s largest state employment base |
North Dakota recorded a particularly large percentage increase, reaching approximately 900 employees, partly following the opening of a fulfillment center in Fargo.
Amazon’s map showed no measurable employment in Alaska, Wyoming, and Vermont at the time. That wording matters: “no measurable employment” under a company reporting methodology is not necessarily proof that no individual in those states performed work for Amazon.

Who was not included in the total?
The one-million figure should not be treated as a count of every person working in Amazon’s broader commercial ecosystem.

- Contractors and third-party logistics workers: People employed by outside businesses were generally outside Amazon’s direct employee count.
- Staffing and outsourced labor: The available reporting does not establish how every temporary or outsourced role was treated.
- Marketplace sellers and other businesses: Sellers, suppliers, and companies whose activity depended on Amazon were not Amazon employees.
Amazon said more than 260,000 drivers worked for approximately 3,000 Delivery Service Partner companies worldwide at the time. That figure should not be added to the 1.1 million as though it were a combined official employee total. It also was not a U.S.-only count.
The key distinction is:
- Direct employees: People employed on Amazon’s payroll.
- Indirect workforce: People employed by delivery companies, contractors, staffing agencies, sellers, and other outside businesses connected to Amazon.
How large was Amazon compared with other employers?
The milestone demonstrated Amazon’s unusual scale in the U.S. labor market. More than 1.6 million people worked for Amazon worldwide at the end of 2021, and the calculated U.S. total represented the majority of that workforce.

It is risky, however, to assign Amazon a definitive rank among U.S. employers without defining the comparison. Rankings can produce different results depending on whether they include government workers, franchise employees, part-time staff, contractors, seasonal workers, or only domestic payroll employees.
Likewise, “Amazon created 1.1 million jobs” would be an inaccurate description. The figure was an estimated number of direct employees at a particular point in time, not a cumulative count of jobs created or a measure of all jobs supported by Amazon.
Why the date and methodology matter
The milestone occurred by the end of 2021 and was reported on February 9, 2022. It should not be presented as a current 2026 headcount.

The figure also should not be confused with an annual average, a seasonal peak, or a count limited to permanent full-time employees. The available material describes Amazon’s direct employment data but does not establish the exact treatment of every part-time, temporary, or seasonal worker.
Later layoffs, hiring changes, or workforce adjustments would not invalidate the historical milestone. They would simply be separate events requiring separate, current evidence.
The bottom line on Amazon’s million-employee milestone
Amazon did surpass one million direct U.S. employees at the end of 2021. The best-supported estimate was roughly 1.1 million, calculated from Amazon’s state-level employment figures and representing about 18% growth from the prior year.

The number captures Amazon’s direct payroll workforce—not delivery drivers employed by independent partners, contractors, marketplace sellers, or every job supported by its business. It is a useful measure of Amazon’s pandemic-era expansion, but it is not evidence of the company’s current U.S. employee count in 2026.
