But that was not the end of Just Walk Out: in 2026, Amazon announced it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores while continuing to deploy the checkout-free technology at third-party venues and fulfillment-center breakrooms.
What changed at Amazon Fresh in 2024?
Amazon said in April 2024 that it would remove Just Walk Out from its U.S. Amazon Fresh stores and replace it with Dash Carts. The company said customer feedback pointed to two priorities: avoiding checkout lines and being able to see a receipt and savings while shopping. Dash Cart was intended to address both.
The change applied to Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the United States; it did not mean Amazon was abandoning Just Walk Out everywhere. The Associated Press reported the Fresh transition, while Amazon described how it viewed the two systems: Associated Press reporting on the Fresh change and Amazon’s comparison of the shopping formats.
How Dash Cart and Just Walk Out differ
| Shopping feature | Dash Cart | Just Walk Out |
|---|---|---|
| Best-fit trip | Amazon positioned it for larger grocery trips and baskets. | Amazon described it as suited to smaller, quick, “mission driven” trips with relatively few items. |
| How checkout works | Shoppers scan items as they shop; the cart also weighs eligible items. | Shoppers enter, take items, and leave without scanning each item at checkout. |
| Receipt and total | A screen shows a running receipt and savings total during the trip. | The shopper does not scan items at a checkout lane; the supplied source does not specify when a receipt or total is shown. |
| Other in-store help | The cart screen can help locate products; Amazon also described deal discovery and produce weighing. | Amazon’s cited description emphasizes entering, selecting items, and leaving, rather than on-cart navigation or weighing. |
| Where Amazon reported use | Amazon Fresh stores before the 2026 closure announcement. | Third-party locations and Amazon fulfillment-center breakrooms, as well as deployments in the Amazon-owned stores before their announced closures. |
Amazon says Dash Cart uses computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion to identify items placed in and removed from the cart. Shoppers scan items and use a dedicated cart lane to leave. For Just Walk Out, the core distinction is that shoppers do not stop to scan every item at checkout. Amazon’s feature descriptions are available in its Dash Cart explanation and shopping-format overview.

What happened to Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go afterward?
On May 12, 2026, Amazon announced that it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores. The company said it had not yet created a sufficiently distinctive customer experience with the right economic model for large-scale expansion. That later decision is separate from the 2024 checkout change: Dash Cart replaced Just Walk Out at Fresh stores in 2024, but Amazon subsequently decided to close the Fresh and Go store businesses.
Amazon’s announcement did not say that Just Walk Out technology was ending. Instead, it reported that the system remained in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms. Those are Amazon-reported deployment counts. Amazon also described a planned 2026 deployment with ENOC in the UAE; a planned deployment should not be read as a completed one. What Amazon’s Dash Cart numbers do—and do not—show
Amazon’s AWS post reported results from Amazon’s Q1 2024 Dash Cart user data: Dash Cart shoppers spent 10% more than shoppers who did not use a Dash Cart, 80% of Dash Cart shoppers were repeat users, and the reported customer-satisfaction rating was 98%. These are company-reported figures, not independent findings. The spending comparison does not establish that using a Dash Cart caused shoppers to spend more; shoppers who chose the cart may have differed from those who did not.
Amazon also reported Lumen Field results for Just Walk Out: an 85% increase in transactions and a 112% increase in sales per game. Amazon attributed those figures to the venue; they are not a general measure of how the technology performs in grocery stores. Amazon’s account is in its report on Just Walk Out at Lumen Field.

What the shift means for shoppers
The 2024 change reflected two different shopping patterns, not a simple replacement of all checkout-free technology. A Dash Cart requires shoppers to scan items, but it makes the running total and savings visible during a grocery trip and supports weighing and product-finding. Just Walk Out removes the item-scanning step at checkout and was positioned for quicker, smaller-item trips.
As of Amazon’s May 2026 announcement, the practical distinction is no longer a choice between Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores using different systems: Amazon said those physical stores would close. Just Walk Out, however, remained in other settings, including third-party stores and workplace breakrooms. Amazon has also described an RFID version of the technology and a rate of up to six transactions per minute per RFID lane, a company-stated capacity rather than a guarantee for every location. Details are in its RFID Just Walk Out update.
