Amazon’s $2.5 billion settlement does not mean every Prime subscriber will receive a refund—or that each eligible customer will get $200. The current FTC rules cover certain U.S. Prime customers who enrolled through specified sign-up flows or had trouble canceling online from June 23, 2019, through June 23, 2025, and used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12-month period after enrollment. No claim form is required for the automatic payments; the FTC says eligible customers should receive them by April 2027.
Who is eligible for a refund?
Under the Federal Trade Commission’s current Amazon refunds guidance, you must meet all three conditions:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |

- You are an Amazon Prime customer in the United States.
- Between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, you either signed up through a challenged enrollment flow or tried to cancel using Amazon’s online cancellation flow but could not complete the process.
- After enrolling, you used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12-month period.
The FTC identifies the challenged sign-up flows as the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single page checkout, and Prime Video enrollment flow. A Prime membership by itself does not establish eligibility: the sign-up or cancellation circumstances and benefit-use limit also matter.
Do I need to file a claim?
No. Under the revised process, there is no claim form, notice response, or other action required to receive an automatic payment. Amazon administers the payments, which may arrive by mailed check or electronically through PayPal or Venmo. The FTC says recipients generally have 60 days after a payment is issued to accept it. For account-specific questions, use the settlement administrator contact details on the FTC’s official refund page.

- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.

How much will my payment be?
The maximum total payment is $200 per eligible customer, not a guaranteed payout. The FTC says refunds are for Prime subscription fees. What an individual receives depends on the settlement’s distribution rules and the customer’s payment history; public guidance cannot establish a specific person’s amount.
| Payment detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Earlier cap | Up to $51 in the initial payment phase. |
| Possible additional amount | Up to $149 more under the revised distribution process, subject to the settlement terms and funds remaining. |
| Revised total cap | No eligible customer can receive more than $200 in total. |
The court-approved revised order includes an additional pro rata distribution stage for some customers who previously accepted a settlement payment if accepted payments fall below the specified threshold. That does not mean every recipient will receive the additional maximum.

When will I get my payment?
The FTC says eligible customers should receive refunds by April 2027. The expanded payment phase for customers who used 11–20 Prime benefits in a 12-month period was scheduled to begin October 1, 2026. As of September 2026, Amazon had issued more than $845 million in refunds, according to the FTC.
Payments may be sent by check, PayPal, or Venmo. Watch for official payment communications and check the FTC refund page for current administrator contact information and program updates.

Why do older articles mention fewer than three benefits or a $51 limit?
Those figures describe the initial phase, not the current overall criteria. The FTC’s earlier consumer alert described automatic refunds for U.S. customers who used fewer than three Prime benefits in a 12-month period, with payments capped at $51. The revised guidance expanded eligibility to customers who used no more than 20 benefits in any 12-month period and raised the total cap to $200. The revised process also makes future payments automatic.
What is the $2.5 billion settlement for?
The settlement announced by the FTC in September 2025 totals $2.5 billion, but it is not all money being distributed to customers:

The FTC’s case alleged that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without their consent and made cancellation difficult. Under the settlement, Amazon must provide clear disclosures of material terms, a clear option to decline Prime, and an easy cancellation method available through the same method a customer used to sign up. These are allegations resolved through a settlement, not a separate finding in this article.

Not every Prime customer qualifies, and the public FTC materials cannot confirm an individual customer’s eligibility, payment status, or amount. Amazon’s records determine whether a customer meets the criteria, and the FTC says the program continues through April 2027.

How can I avoid refund scams?
The FTC says, “The FTC is not contacting people about refunds in the Amazon matter.” It also warns: “And no one from Amazon will ever ask you for money to get a refund.” Treat requests for a fee, promises of a guaranteed refund, or offers of special access as scams. Use the FTC’s official refund page rather than links or contact details in unexpected messages.
