Amazon Prime Pantry closed in the United States on January 6, 2021. Thousands of products previously listed under Pantry moved to Amazon’s main retail site, but the service itself did not simply become Amazon Fresh. Today, Amazon Fresh delivery, pickup, and delivery from participating local retailers may be options in some areas; what is available depends on your location.
What happened to Prime Pantry?
Prime Pantry was Amazon’s service for ordering groceries and household essentials. Bloomberg reported on January 7, 2021, that the U.S. service had closed the day before and that thousands of items previously offered through Pantry had been folded into Amazon’s main retail site (Bloomberg).
The closure ended the Pantry-branded service, not necessarily the sale of every product it carried. Product listings and availability can change, so an item that was once available through Pantry may or may not be available on Amazon now. Bloomberg’s report does not establish a reason for the closure.
What can former U.S. customers use now?
There is no single, universal replacement for Prime Pantry. Depending on your location, Amazon may offer grocery delivery or pickup through Amazon Fresh, or delivery from local and specialty retailers listed on Amazon.com. Amazon’s 2026 announcement names Bristol Farms, Cardenas Markets, Pet Food Express, Weis Markets, and Save Mart among participating retailers in applicable areas (About Amazon).

Amazon says online Fresh grocery delivery is available in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns. In areas where perishable groceries are offered, same-day delivery may include produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and frozen foods. Amazon also says grocery delivery and free pickup are available to customers in U.S. cities and towns where Amazon Fresh is available to Prime members (About Amazon). These are Amazon’s stated service details; they do not mean every service or retailer is available at every address.
Check what is available at your address
- Enter your delivery address or ZIP code in the Amazon app or on Amazon.com.
- Look for the grocery delivery or pickup options shown for your location, including Amazon Fresh and any participating local retailers.
- Compare the available assortment with what you need: Pantry’s former listings focused on grocery and household essentials, while current local options may also include fresh or perishable food.
- Review the delivery or pickup terms and any fees shown at checkout before placing an order. Terms can differ by location and retailer.
Was Prime Pantry merged into Amazon Fresh?
That description applies to a different market, not the U.S. closure. Amazon India announced that Pantry had been integrated into the Amazon Fresh storefront across more than 300 Indian cities, with Pantry’s selection retained in the Fresh store (About Amazon India). For the United States, Bloomberg reported that Pantry closed and its listed products were folded into Amazon’s main retail site. The India transition is not evidence that U.S. Pantry was renamed Fresh.

Was Prime Pantry the same as Prime Now?
No. Prime Now was a separate Amazon service. In May 2021, Amazon announced that Prime Now’s standalone app and website experience would move into Amazon’s app and website, where customers in eligible locations could find options such as Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and local stores (About Amazon). That later integration was distinct from Prime Pantry’s U.S. shutdown.
