Amazon’s big free-shipping change did not take Prime delivery away from members. It ended the old program that let some members share the shipping perk with someone outside their household.
Amazon did not end free Prime shipping for paying Prime members. It ended a legacy sharing arrangement that had allowed certain Prime members to extend the shipping benefit to someone who lived outside their household. That Prime Invitee Program ended on October 1, 2025.

For most shoppers, the practical question is now simple: people in the same household may be able to share eligible Prime benefits through Amazon Family; people who live elsewhere generally need their own Prime membership or must use the available non-Prime delivery options.
What Amazon changed
Under the former Prime Invitee Program, a Prime member could share the Prime shipping benefit with an invitee outside the member’s household. Amazon retired that route on October 1, 2025.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
- Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
This was a rule change about who can receive a shared shipping benefit. It was not a new shipping charge for the person who pays for Prime, and it did not eliminate that member’s included Prime delivery benefits.

| A legacy invitee could receive the Prime shipping benefit while living outside the primary member’s household. | That non-household Invitee option has ended. |
| Sharing was centered on shipping. | Qualifying household sharing is handled through Amazon Family, which can include more eligible Prime benefits. |
| Affected invitees were offered a limited 2025 enrollment promotion. | That promotion expired on December 31, 2025. |
What has not changed for the Prime member
If you already pay for Prime, your membership still includes fast, free delivery on eligible Prime items. Amazon says Prime covers more than 300 million items in the U.S., with many items eligible for same-day or one-day delivery. The delivery promise still depends on the item and your address, so a Prime label does not mean every item will arrive at the same speed everywhere.
In other words, the headline should not be read as “Amazon ended free shipping.” The change closed an older way to share that benefit across separate households.

Can you still share Prime delivery?
Yes, but the address and household relationship now matter. Amazon’s current household-sharing option is Amazon Family.

- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
For many Prime benefits, Amazon Family can include one additional adult. That person must:
- be at least 18 years old;
- live in the same household as the Prime member; and
- have an Amazon account of their own.
The additional adult keeps a separate Amazon account, and fast, free Prime delivery is among the benefits Amazon identifies as shareable for qualifying household members. Amazon’s current U.S. Prime materials describe this as two adults in the same household sharing one Prime membership at no additional cost.
To see whether your account is eligible and set it up, sign in to Amazon and look for the Amazon Family controls in your account settings. The live account flow is the right place to confirm the benefits and terms that apply to you.

| Your situation | Most relevant option | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You and the other adult live in the same household | Amazon Family | Explore household sharing. The second adult uses a separate Amazon account, subject to Amazon’s eligibility rules. |
| You live at different addresses | Separate membership or non-Prime delivery | The old off-household Invitee route is gone. Consider a separate Prime membership or eligible non-Prime shipping. |
| You only place occasional larger orders | Eligible non-Prime free delivery | Amazon says eligible items fulfilled and shipped by Amazon can qualify for free delivery at a $35 order threshold; it says those orders may take five to eight days. |
What it could cost if you live elsewhere
Amazon currently lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Whether that is worthwhile depends less on the old sharing arrangement and more on how often you need faster delivery, order eligible items, and use any other included Prime benefits.

- Digital tabletop postal scale for quickly and precisely weighing items
- Includes a shipping postal scale and AC adapter; made of durable black ABS, aluminum, and iron
- 65 pound (30kg) capacity reads to 0.1 ounce (1g) in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 0.2 ounces (5g)
- Extra large LCD display for easy viewing; measuring units in ounces, pounds, g, and kg
- Tare function for resetting the scale to zero after setting a container on the platform; great for net weights
If the delivery benefit is your only reason to subscribe, compare that price with your actual order pattern. A non-Prime customer can still receive free delivery on qualifying orders of at least $35, but only on eligible items fulfilled and shipped by Amazon, and Amazon says delivery can take five to eight days. Marketplace items, item eligibility, and delivery estimates can change the result, so check the delivery promise in the cart before ordering.
Do not rely on the old invitee promotion
During the 2025 transition, affected invitees reportedly had an offer to enroll for $14.99 for one year. It applied only to a defined enrollment period running from September 5 through December 31, 2025. That window has passed, so it is historical context—not a current Prime price or an offer a shopper should expect to claim.
Do not confuse this with “Add to Delivery”
Amazon’s later Add to Delivery feature is separate from the shutdown of the Invitee Program. For eligible U.S. Prime members using the Amazon Shopping app or Amazon.com on mobile, it can allow an eligible item to be added to an upcoming delivery without a second checkout or added shipping fees.

Before changing your membership, check these details
- Confirm whether the other person actually lives in your household. If so, review Amazon Family rather than assuming a second membership is necessary.
- Check the delivery eligibility for the items you buy most. Prime speed, non-Prime free-shipping eligibility, and fulfillment can vary by item and location.
- Price your normal non-Prime order. The $35 threshold applies only to eligible items fulfilled and shipped by Amazon.
- Ignore expired transition pricing. Use the current price shown in Amazon’s membership page or checkout flow.
- Review the account’s current sharing controls and terms before making changes, since eligibility is determined by Amazon’s live account experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Amazon end free shipping for Prime members?
No. The October 2025 change ended the legacy non-household Invitee Program. Paying Prime members still receive included Prime delivery on eligible items.
Can two adults still share one Prime membership?
Amazon Family can include one additional adult for many Prime benefits when that adult is at least 18, lives in the same household, and has a separate Amazon account.
What if the person I used to share with lives at a different address?
The former Invitee route is no longer available for a person living elsewhere. They can consider their own Prime membership or eligible non-Prime free delivery on orders meeting Amazon’s stated $35 threshold.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

No. The reported transition offer ended on December 31, 2025 and should not be treated as a current deal.
The Bottom Line
Amazon ended an old loophole for sharing Prime delivery across different households, not free Prime shipping itself. Same-household adults should look at Amazon Family; people at different addresses should compare a separate Prime membership with eligible $35-plus non-Prime orders.
