Amazon’s 30-minute delivery is no longer just a test. The company announced a broader U.S. rollout of Amazon Now on May 12, 2026, offering thousands of selected groceries, household essentials, and other local products in about 30 minutes or less. It is a ground-delivery service with extra fees, and availability depends on your address—not a promise that any Amazon item can arrive in half an hour.
What Amazon Now is—and how the test became a rollout
Reports in December 2025 described Amazon testing an ultra-fast delivery service in selected U.S. markets. On May 12, 2026, Amazon announced a broader rollout of Amazon Now to dozens of cities. As of August 18, 2026, “testing” is an incomplete description: Amazon is rolling out and expanding the service, while access remains limited by location and inventory. Amazon’s rollout announcement gives the company’s current description.
Amazon Now uses smaller fulfillment sites positioned close to customers. The sites hold a curated selection, staff pick and pack orders, and delivery partners make shorter trips. That local setup—not a 30-minute promise for the full Amazon warehouse network—is what makes the speed possible.
Where Amazon Now is available
In its May 2026 announcement, Amazon named Atlanta, Dallas–Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Seattle, along with parts of Austin, Denver, Houston, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, and Phoenix. The list describes markets, not guaranteed coverage across every neighborhood or ZIP code. Amazon said it planned to reach tens of millions more customers by the end of 2026; that was a stated plan, not confirmation that every planned area had launched.

What you can order
Amazon describes Amazon Now as a selection of thousands of items, not the full Amazon catalog. The announced assortment includes groceries such as dairy, eggs, produce, and bakery items; health and personal-care products; baby and pet supplies; household essentials; and some electronics, including AirPods. Alcohol may be available where legally permitted. The range is curated and can vary by location, so an item available in one market may not be offered in another.

What Amazon Now costs
Amazon’s May 12, 2026 U.S. announcement listed the following delivery fees. Local checkout terms can change or differ by address, so confirm the total before placing an order.
| Customer | Amazon Now delivery fee | Small-order fee for orders under $15 |
|---|---|---|
| Prime member | $3.99 per order | $1.99 |
| Non-Prime customer | $13.99 per order | $3.99 |
The small-order charge is additional to the listed delivery fee when an order is under $15. Prime is not required, and membership does not make Amazon Now free. Amazon’s U.S. Prime materials list membership at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually; eligible students and young adults and qualifying customers using Prime Access have separate rates and eligibility rules. Check Amazon’s Prime page for current terms. If you would join Prime only to use Amazon Now occasionally, compare the membership cost with paying the nonmember fee for the orders you actually expect to place.

What “30 minutes” means in practice
Amazon describes the service as delivery in about 30 minutes or less. That is not evidence of a universal, unconditional punctuality guarantee. The available estimate and order eligibility can depend on your address, stock, operating hours, order size, demand, weather, traffic, and delivery capacity. Amazon says the service operates 24 hours a day in most areas where it is available, not necessarily in every eligible area.
- Address is not eligible: Check the service page or app with your delivery address. A city appearing on Amazon’s list does not establish coverage for every ZIP code.
- An item is missing or becomes unavailable: Amazon Now has local, limited inventory. The selection shown at checkout is more relevant than the general category list.
- Your basket is under $15: The announced small-order fee applies below that threshold; review the current checkout total.
- The delivery estimate changes: Treat the estimate shown for your order as time- and location-specific rather than assuming every order will arrive within the same window.
How it compares with Amazon’s other fast-delivery options
| Service | Delivery method | Stated speed | Typical selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Now | Ground delivery from nearby smaller fulfillment sites | About 30 minutes or less | Thousands of groceries, essentials, and locally relevant products |
| One-hour and three-hour delivery | Amazon’s broader delivery network | One or three hours in select markets | More than 90,000 products, according to Amazon’s May 2026 announcement |
| Same-Day Delivery | Amazon’s delivery network | Same day | Millions of items; Amazon says the service reaches more than 10,000 U.S. cities and towns |
| Prime Air | Autonomous drone | Within 60 minutes for eligible packages, according to Amazon’s service description | Eligible lightweight packages |
These options differ in speed, inventory, and local availability. Amazon Now is the ground-based, short-distance service; it is not another name for Prime Air. The same-day and one-hour or three-hour options may suit shoppers who want a wider selection and can wait longer.

Prime Air is a separate drone program
Prime Air uses autonomous drones for eligible packages, rather than the nearby ground-delivery model used by Amazon Now. Amazon describes MK30 drone deliveries as arriving within 60 minutes and says the aircraft can travel up to 7.5 miles from an Amazon facility. Those specifications do not mean drone delivery is available wherever Amazon Now operates. Amazon’s Prime Air service description outlines its stated speed and range.
FAA environmental-review materials for proposed Prime Air operations in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Omaha, Nebraska, describe potential operating parameters for the MK30: a maximum range of 7.5 miles, an operating area of about 174 square miles, proposed hours of 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and up to 1,000 delivery flights per operating day—about 365,000 annual delivery operations from each proposed center. These are proposed or reviewed parameters, not proof that all those operations were active for customers. The FAA’s environmental-review materials provide the relevant status.

Amazon says its MK30 testing simulates failures involving motors, electronic speed controllers, propellers, and flight computers; it also says its systems model obstacles such as buildings, bridges, and power lines and may refuse a delivery if a landing area is obstructed. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its own safety processes, not an independent finding that drone delivery is risk-free. Amazon’s account of its drone safety testing explains those claims.
When the extra speed may be worth paying for
Amazon Now is most relevant when you need a small number of groceries or household necessities quickly and your address has the service. It is less compelling when you are planning a large shop, want broad catalog choice, or can wait for standard, same-day, or next-day delivery. For a price-conscious decision, compare the basket total—including the delivery and any small-order fee—with the cost and timing of the slower option. Prime may reduce the Amazon Now fee, but it does not remove it.
