Amazon said employees would move to other offices. The exit concerns one leased building; it does not mean Amazon is leaving Seattle.
Which Amazon office did the company leave?
Kumo is Amazon’s name for the seven-story building at 1915 Terry Avenue in Seattle’s Denny Triangle. The property is a few blocks from Amazon’s main office towers and the Spheres. Seattle Children’s owns the building. GeekWire reported that Amazon had occupied it since 2014 and that it contains 251,000 square feet; that figure describes building area, not the number of desks or employees. GeekWire’s February 24, 2026 report has the property details.
When did Amazon move out?
On February 24, 2026, GeekWire reported that Amazon would not renew the lease and planned to leave at the end of May. A September 2026 report by KIRO 7 said the lease had lapsed in May. As of October 2026, the lease exit is complete. KIRO 7’s September report provides the later update.
Is Amazon leaving Seattle?
No such departure is reported. Amazon said Kumo employees would relocate to other offices, but the company did not disclose how many people worked at the building or where they would go. The King County Department of Assessments’ 2025 assessment-year report identifies Seattle and Bellevue as Amazon’s primary office locations. That report offers assessment-year context, not a current inventory of Amazon’s office space. Read the King County assessment report information.

How does the Kumo exit fit Amazon’s wider office footprint?
The Kumo lease is one change within a larger regional footprint, but the available figures measure different things and should not be conflated.
- Seattle reductions: A February 2026 accessible preview from the Puget Sound Business Journal reported that Amazon had given up more than 1 million square feet of Seattle office space since 2020, most of it in Denny Triangle. This is the outlet’s cumulative reported figure, not a company statement or a measurement of the Kumo building alone. See the Puget Sound Business Journal preview.
- Regional context: The King County report discusses earlier Seattle lease nonrenewals alongside office additions or plans on the Eastside. KIRO 7’s September 2026 coverage also describes other regional space changes and continued occupancy in the Seattle region. These reports provide context, but they do not establish what caused Amazon’s decision about Kumo.
Amazon’s December 2007 announcement of a planned South Lake Union headquarters described a much earlier expansion: up to 11 buildings, six blocks and up to 1.6 million square feet. Those were the scale and plans stated at the time, not a current office count. In that announcement, Tim Halladay, then Amazon.com vice president of real estate and finance operations, said the move would enable the company to serve customers better by enhancing employee collaboration and productivity. The historical statement does not explain the 2026 lease decision. Amazon’s 2007 headquarters announcement.

What is not known about the move?
- Amazon did not disclose the number of employees based at Kumo.
- The company did not identify the specific offices receiving those employees.
- The cited coverage does not establish a building-specific reason for the nonrenewal.
Without those details, the building’s square footage cannot be used to estimate affected headcount, and broader office trends should not be presented as the proven cause of this particular decision.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
