Their reaction—“Thought I was a top performer but guess I’m expendable”—captures one worker’s shock; it does not explain why their role was selected or show how Amazon assessed performance across the layoffs.
What the employee said—and what the quote can establish
GeekWire published the reaction on October 28, 2025, in a roundup of responses to Amazon’s announcement of about 14,000 corporate role reductions. The anonymous Reddit commenter described themself as an L6 SDEIII who had advanced from SDEI and said their most recent review rated them “raising the bar.” GeekWire reproduced the comment: “Thought I was a top performer but guess I’m expendable.” GeekWire’s October 28 roundup
That is a personal account, not independently verified employment or performance history. It shows the commenter perceived a disconnect between favorable feedback and losing their job. It does not establish Amazon’s assessment of that employee, the reason the specific position was chosen, or whether performance ratings were disregarded in the company’s selection process.
Why Amazon said it was reducing corporate roles
In its October 2025 announcement, Amazon Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti said the company aimed to reduce bureaucracy and organizational layers, increase ownership, and direct resources toward areas it considered important to customers. She wrote: “We’re convinced that we need to be organized more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business.” Amazon’s October 2025 message

That public explanation describes Amazon’s organizational rationale; it does not answer why the commenter’s particular role was selected. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had also said the company expected extensive use of AI to bring efficiency gains and reduce its total corporate workforce over time. That provides context for Amazon’s longer-term staffing outlook, but does not show that AI was the sole cause of any particular termination or of every role eliminated in October. How the October and January announcements compare
Amazon announced a second round of corporate role reductions in January 2026. The company said some teams had not completed organizational changes in October and again cited reducing layers and bureaucracy. GeekWire reported that the two announcements totaled 30,000 roles, more than the 27,000 positions Amazon had eliminated across multiple rounds in 2023. These are announced or reported figures, not independent confirmation that every separation was completed. Amazon’s January 2026 message; GeekWire’s report on the January reductions

| Announcement | Roles described | Company’s stated context |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | About 14,000 corporate roles | Reduce bureaucracy and layers, increase ownership, and shift resources toward priorities for customers and the business. |
| January 2026 | About 16,000 additional roles | Some teams had not completed October’s organizational changes; Amazon again cited reducing layers and bureaucracy. |
In January, Galetti said broad reductions every few months were not the company’s plan. The remark was a response to whether recurring cuts would become a new rhythm, not a guarantee against future workforce changes. Amazon’s January 2026 message
What Amazon announced about internal searches and transition support
Amazon said most affected employees would have 90 days to seek an internal role, subject to local-law timing. The company also said transition support could include severance, outplacement services, and health benefits. For the January 2026 announcement, Amazon described a 90-day internal search for most U.S.-based affected workers, with timing varying internationally, and said severance, outplacement, and health-insurance benefits were available to those who did not remain. GeekWire’s roundup included accounts from people in areas such as advertising, recruiting, robotics, retail, Prime Video, Amazon Games, business development, finance, and devices and services. Some described a first layoff, concern about immigration status, abrupt notification, or losing access to work systems. Those are attributed personal experiences; they should not be treated as a universal account of how Amazon handled every affected employee. GeekWire’s employee and community reactions

The distinction matters for workers trying to understand their own financial or career risk: an individual account can describe what one person experienced, while company announcements state the employer’s broad rationale and terms. Neither, by itself, reveals the selection criteria applied to a specific position.
