Your bill depends on the storage class, AWS Region, access pattern, and charges beyond storage. Also, “Amazon Glacier” now has two meanings: a legacy vault service and the current S3 Glacier archive classes.
Is Amazon Glacier still available?
AWS distinguishes its original, standalone vault service from the current S3 Glacier storage classes. The legacy service uses separate APIs; AWS says it stopped accepting new customers on December 15, 2025, while existing data remains accessible. For new archive storage, AWS recommends S3 Glacier classes. AWS’s S3 Glacier API pricing page describes the older service as “a legacy standalone service that stores data in vaults using separate APIs.”

The current S3 options are Glacier Instant Retrieval, Glacier Flexible Retrieval, and Glacier Deep Archive. These are S3 storage classes, so they fit into S3’s object-storage and management model rather than the legacy vault service.

What does 99.999999999% durability mean?
“Eleven nines” is AWS’s designed durability figure for objects stored in each of the three S3 Glacier classes. AWS describes durability over a given year; it is a service-design target, not an independently measured customer-level loss rate or a promise that every customer configuration is risk-free. AWS’s storage-class comparison lists the figure for Instant, Flexible, and Deep Archive.

- WD quality inside and out
Durability is not availability. Durability concerns the likelihood that stored objects remain intact; availability concerns whether the service can provide access when requested. AWS lists availability separately: 99.9% for Instant Retrieval, and 99.99% for Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive after objects are restored. The latter two classes require a restore before access, so their availability figure does not mean archived data is immediately readable.
AWS says its multi-Availability Zone classes are designed to withstand the loss of an Availability Zone. That architecture does not replace customer recovery planning: protect important data with appropriate versioning, backups, or other controls. S3 documentation describes versioning, Object Lock, and replication among available data-protection options.

Which S3 Glacier class fits your access pattern?
Choose by how often data may be needed and how quickly you need it. AWS’s access-pattern descriptions and restore estimates are planning guidance, not a guarantee of a particular retrieval time. AWS’s class guide notes: “Each S3 Glacier storage class has a minimum storage duration for all objects.”

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Class | Best fit | Access and retrieval | Minimum storage duration | Billing details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval | Long-lived archives accessed about once a quarter | Milliseconds; real-time access without a restore step | 90 days | Retrieval fees apply. AWS lists a 128 KB minimum billable object size. |
| S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval | Long-lived archives accessed about once a year or less, where asynchronous access is acceptable | Restore first; typically minutes to hours depending on retrieval tier | 90 days | Per-GB retrieval fees apply; archived objects include metadata charges. |
| S3 Glacier Deep Archive | Long-lived archives accessed less than once a year | Restore first; AWS gives a typical 9–48-hour range | 180 days | Per-GB retrieval fees apply; archived objects include metadata charges. |
Instant Retrieval is the option to consider when an archive still needs near-immediate reads. Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive trade slower access for less frequent retrieval use. If you delete, overwrite, or transition an object before its minimum storage duration ends, AWS may charge for the remaining duration.

How much does Amazon Glacier cost per GB?
There is no responsible universal current “penny per GB” answer. AWS pricing varies by storage class and Region, and storage is only one possible part of the bill. Depending on the configuration and workload, charges can also include requests, retrieval, data transfer, data management, replication, and transformation or query features. Use AWS’s S3 pricing page to estimate the selected Region, class, and expected usage rather than treating a headline rate as a complete cost.
Historical figures should not be read as current quotes. AWS announced a Deep Archive launch price of $0.00099 per GB-month in 2019; that dated launch price does not establish today’s rate in a particular Region. In 2021, AWS announced a 10% storage-price reduction for Flexible Retrieval and free bulk retrievals effective December 1, 2021. Those were historical changes, not evidence of current pricing.

How to choose and estimate the real cost
- Set the access requirement. If data needs to be readable in milliseconds, assess Instant Retrieval. If restoring first is acceptable, compare Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive against the likely delay.
- Check the retention period. Compare your planned time in the class with its 90- or 180-day minimum. Include possible deletion, overwriting, or lifecycle transitions in the estimate because they can trigger remaining-duration charges.
- Estimate the whole workload in the intended Region. Include expected stored volume and object count, requests, restores, data transfer, and any management, replication, or transformation/query features you plan to use.
- Plan for recovery as well as storage. Decide how you will retain recoverable versions and restore critical data; consider relevant S3 controls such as versioning, Object Lock, or replication where they fit your needs.
