Amazon’s optional grocery delivery subscription for Prime members costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and covers unlimited delivery on qualifying orders over $25. Amazon says the service is available in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns, but that does not mean every address is covered; availability depends on location and participating retailers.
What the $9.99 subscription includes
Amazon’s May 12, 2026 update lists the subscription as an optional add-on for Prime members. It provides unlimited grocery delivery on qualifying orders over $25 from Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and participating local grocery and specialty retailers. Partner options vary by location. Amazon’s subscription details provide the current terms.

Amazon says Prime Access members may pay $4.99 per month for the subscription. It also says the discounted subscription is available to customers with a registered EBT card. These are eligibility-based rates, not the standard Prime-member price. The grocery add-on is separate from Prime Access membership. Amazon’s subscription explainer describes the discount.
What Amazon means by “nationwide”
Amazon reports coverage in more than 5,000 cities and towns, not universal service to every U.S. address. It directs customers to check which grocery options are available near them. A city may have the subscription but not every participating retailer, and an address-level check is the practical way to confirm service. Do not confuse the subscription footprint with Amazon’s separate Same-Day perishable grocery delivery coverage. Amazon’s May 12, 2026 update puts that service at more than 2,300 U.S. cities and towns; it is a different delivery option, not the coverage count for the paid subscription. Amazon’s Same-Day grocery announcement covers that service.
Is the add-on necessary for Prime grocery delivery?
No. Amazon lists multiple grocery delivery paths for Prime customers, each with its own eligibility, fees, and local availability. The subscription is one option—not a prerequisite for ordering groceries through Amazon. For example, Amazon says Prime Same-Day grocery orders are free over $25 in most areas, with a $2.99 charge below that threshold. That fee rule applies to Same-Day delivery, not automatically to the paid subscription or every grocery service. Check Amazon’s current grocery guide for the options shown for your address.

How to decide whether it is worth paying for
Compare the add-on with the grocery services already available through your Prime membership and with the delivery fees you actually encounter. Your local options, order sizes, and ordering frequency determine whether a recurring fee makes financial sense.
- Check your address: Confirm which services and retailers deliver to your specific location.
- Compare order rules: The subscription requires qualifying orders over $25; other delivery paths may have different thresholds or fees.
- Estimate your own use: Compare the monthly or annual subscription cost with delivery charges you would otherwise pay. Amazon’s assertion that the plan can “pay for itself” is not a guarantee of savings for every household.
- Consider the annual option carefully: The $99.99 annual rate is lower than twelve payments of $9.99, but it only makes sense if you expect to use the service enough over the year.
How the terms changed since launch
At launch on April 23, 2024, Amazon listed a $35 order threshold and coverage in more than 3,500 U.S. cities and towns. Its May 12, 2026 update lists qualifying orders over $25 and coverage in more than 5,000 cities and towns. The launch figures are historical; use the later terms when evaluating the current offer.
