Amazon ended the legacy Prime Invitee program on October 1, 2025. As of October 2026, people who live elsewhere can no longer use that arrangement for free Prime shipping. Eligible people who share the Prime member’s primary residence can still share benefits through Amazon Family, Amazon’s replacement for Amazon Household.
What changed—and what did not
Prime Invitee was a legacy program that let a Prime member extend eligible fast, free delivery to another person, including someone living at a different address. Amazon’s support notice says sharing through the program ended October 1, 2025: Amazon’s Prime Invitee notice. The program had reportedly been closed to new enrollment in 2015, while existing arrangements continued until the 2025 cutoff.
Amazon did not end all Prime sharing. It replaced Amazon Household with Amazon Family, a household-based way to share certain benefits. The change affects the delivery benefit too; it is not only a change to Prime Video or digital content. A former invitee living elsewhere may lose Prime delivery on their own account even if they used the arrangement for years. For background, see The Verge’s report on the change and Associated Press coverage.
Amazon’s announcement rebranded Amazon Household as Amazon Family in an update dated March 7, 2025: Amazon’s explanation of Amazon Household and Amazon Family. This is a formal household-sharing setup, not the same as giving another person your Amazon password.

Who can still share Prime through Amazon Family?
Amazon Family is intended for people in the same household, generally defined in the cited Amazon help material by a shared primary residential address—the home where members spend most of their time. The UK-localized Amazon help pages describe sharing with one other adult and up to four child profiles. Because these detailed support pages are on Amazon’s UK domain, U.S. members should confirm the rules shown in their own U.S. account before relying on a particular household limit or benefit.
- Another adult: The documented arrangement allows one other adult in the household. Adults use separate Amazon accounts.
- Children: The cited help material allows up to four child profiles; profile and age rules can differ by marketplace.
- Roommates: The criterion is household residence, not necessarily a family relationship. A roommate may qualify if they genuinely share the primary home.
Amazon’s help page describes the same-primary-residence rule: Amazon Family benefit and household details. A second delivery address, shared payment card, or family relationship by itself does not establish eligibility; Amazon has not publicly detailed every verification signal it uses.
How to add an eligible household member
- Open Amazon’s Amazon Family information page or the Manage Your Household page while signed in.
- Choose the option for the person’s profile type, such as Add Adult, Add a Teen, or Add a Child. Available choices can vary by account and marketplace.
- For another adult, send an email invitation or complete setup together as prompted so both accounts can be verified.
- Review Family Library and content-sharing settings, and make sure the person’s account is associated with the same primary residence.
- Have the invited adult sign in to their own account and check an eligible product for Prime delivery before placing an order.
Amazon describes adult accounts as separate accounts within the household setup. That preserves each person’s own login rather than requiring adults to share credentials.

What former invitees who live elsewhere can do
A person at a different residence generally has to choose between paying for their own membership and ordering without Prime. Amazon reported that some former invitees were offered Prime for $14.99 a month for 12 months; this was a targeted transition offer reported in 2025, not a guaranteed offer or a confirmed current price. See The New York Times’ report on the transition and The Verge’s coverage.
- Frequent Amazon shopper: Compare the cost of an individual Prime membership with the value of delivery and other benefits you would actually use.
- Occasional shopper: Try non-Prime shipping, bundling purchases, or retailer-specific free-shipping promotions before adding a recurring subscription.
- Retailer-loyal shopper: Compare alternatives such as Walmart+ or Target Circle 360 only if their local availability and benefits fit your shopping habits; they are not substitutes for Amazon-specific inventory or Prime benefits.
Changing a delivery address does not make someone who lives elsewhere an Amazon Family member. A Prime member may be able to place an order and ship it to another address, but that is different from giving the recipient independent Prime delivery on their own account. Do not rely on an old Invitee link or on password sharing as a durable workaround.
Which benefits Amazon Family shares
The benefits available through Amazon Family depend on country, account eligibility, and the terms of each service. Amazon describes possible shared benefits including eligible fast, free delivery, Prime events and deals, Prime Video, Prime Reading, and certain other digital or third-party benefits. Its U.S. Prime page describes delivery options such as Same-Day, One-Day, and Two-Day delivery on eligible items, with speed depending on the item, location, and availability: Amazon Prime in the U.S.

Do not assume every Prime feature transfers. The cited Amazon Family help page says Prime Video Ad Free requires an individual subscription and cannot be shared through Family. Music and other benefits can also have their own sharing limits or country-specific terms: Amazon Family benefit details.
Special cases that can cause confusion
College students and adult children
Being a parent’s dependent or having a parent pay the bill does not by itself establish that a student living elsewhere belongs to the same household. An adult child at another residence should not expect to keep the former Invitee shipping benefit.
Second homes, travel, and temporary addresses
A vacation home, temporary address, or frequent delivery location is not automatically a second qualifying household. The cited standard is the primary residence, not every address used for deliveries.

Teens
Teen eligibility may be handled separately from adult and child profiles. News reports described an exception tied to whether a teen was added before April 7, 2025, but this should not be treated as a universal current U.S. rule. Check the teen’s account and current marketplace-specific terms; see CBS News’ account of the change.
Military, separated, or temporary households
These circumstances are not fully resolved by the public help language cited here. If a household does not clearly share one primary residence, ask Amazon about the specific account before assuming it qualifies.
Accounts in different countries
Amazon Family rules and benefits can differ among marketplaces. The detailed Amazon support pages cited above are UK-localized, so their exact limits and benefit descriptions should not be applied automatically to a U.S. account.

How to compare monthly and annual Prime costs
An Amazon-owned page indexed during research listed U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year; pricing can change, so confirm the amount displayed in your account before subscribing: Amazon Pay’s Prime pricing reference. At those figures, 12 monthly payments total $179.88, while the annual plan is $139—a difference of $40.88. The annual price is lower than paying monthly for 10 months or more, assuming those prices apply and you keep the membership for the full period.
For someone who lives elsewhere, the useful comparison is the membership cost against expected shipping savings and benefits they will actually use. For occasional orders, non-Prime shipping or bundling may cost less than another subscription. Amazon’s Prime page describes eligible delivery options and benefits but does not guarantee the same speed or eligibility for every item or address.
Quick Recap
If a qualifying household member does not see Prime delivery
- Confirm the invited person accepted the invitation.
- Check that the invitation went to the Amazon account they are using.
- Verify the person is still listed in Amazon Family.
- Confirm the delivery address and household’s primary residence are correct.
- Check that the particular item is Prime eligible.
- Sign out and back in, or test in a browser if the app does not show the benefit.
- Check that the accounts are in the same marketplace.
- Contact Amazon customer service if the household meets the stated rules but the benefit remains unavailable.
