Amazon said on April 29, 2025, that it would not add tariff-cost labels beside prices on its main shopping website. The company clarified that Amazon Haul’s team had considered showing import charges on certain products, but the idea was never approved and would not go ahead.

What Amazon said it had considered

Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle said the team behind Amazon Haul, the company’s low-cost storefront, had considered listing import charges on certain products. He added: “This was never approved and is not going to happen.” The clarification described a limited, unapproved idea—not a plan for the main Amazon shopping site.

Why the White House criticized the reported proposal

Before Amazon clarified the status and scope of the idea, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had discussed the report with President Donald Trump. She called the reported move “a hostile and political act by Amazon.”

How the initial report differed from Amazon’s clarification

Punchbowl News initially reported that Amazon planned to show how much of a product’s cost came from tariffs alongside its listed price, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter. That report described a broader possible display. Amazon’s subsequent on-record statement said only that the Haul team had considered listing import charges for certain products, and that the idea was neither approved nor going forward.

What the episode does—and does not—say about prices

The dispute unfolded amid tariff uncertainty, with sellers weighing inventory and pricing decisions. That context helps explain why tariff disclosure became contentious, but it does not establish that any specific Amazon price increase was caused by tariffs. The statements concerned a possible way to label charges, not evidence of a tariff-driven change to a particular product’s price.
