Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate job cuts on October 28, 2025, linking the restructuring to AI-driven productivity as well as plans to reduce management layers and bureaucracy. The announcement was not a claim that AI had individually replaced 14,000 employees: Amazon did not publish a role-by-role account of jobs automated.
What Amazon announced
In an employee memo, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president for People Experience and Technology, announced the reduction of about 14,000 corporate positions. Affected teams and employees were expected to be notified that day. Amazon said it wanted fewer management layers, more individual ownership, less bureaucracy and faster decisions, while directing resources toward higher-priority areas. The Associated Press reported on the announcement and its scope.
The announced reduction concerned corporate roles, not Amazon’s roughly 1.56 million employees across its entire operation. That distinction matters: the headline figure does not mean 14,000 warehouse or delivery workers were included.
How much of Amazon’s workforce was affected?
Amazon had about 350,000 corporate employees, according to figures reported by Yahoo News Canada. Dividing the approximately 14,000 announced positions by that estimate puts the cuts at about 4% of the corporate workforce. Against Amazon’s roughly 1.56 million total employees, the figure is less than 1%. These are approximate comparisons, not a department-by-department tally.

Did AI directly cause the layoffs?
AI was part of Amazon’s stated strategic rationale, but the public information does not establish that 14,000 specific jobs were each replaced by an AI system. The announcement linked the technology’s expected productivity gains to a leaner, less-layered organization. It also emphasized removing bureaucracy and management layers—changes that can eliminate overlapping roles even when no software takes over a particular person’s tasks. - Direct displacement: a defined AI system takes over work previously done in a specific role. Amazon’s public announcement did not identify 14,000 such replacements.
- Productivity-driven headcount reduction: existing employees use AI tools to complete more work, so management expects to need fewer people overall.
- Organizational delayering: the company removes management levels or overlapping responsibilities as it changes how work is assigned and decisions are made.
- Reallocation: people and investment shift from some corporate functions to areas management considers more strategic, including AI and cloud capabilities.
The public rationale supports the latter three more clearly than a one-for-one automation explanation. Whether these reductions would have happened without AI is not established.
Jassy had warned of AI-related workforce changes
In June 2025, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon’s corporate workforce was likely to shrink over the following years as employees used generative AI and gained efficiency. His comments described an expected longer-term change; the October announcement set out a specific initial reduction. The Los Angeles Times reported on both the earlier warning and the October cuts.

Is the real number 30,000?
No confirmed October announcement established 30,000 cuts. The publicly announced figure was approximately 14,000. Separate reporting described a possible broader internal target of as many as 30,000 corporate jobs. That was a reported potential total, not a confirmed completed reduction or a replacement for the 14,000 figure. The Los Angeles Times covered the reported target alongside the announcement.
Why cut jobs while investing in AI?
Reducing some corporate positions while spending heavily on AI is not necessarily contradictory. AI development requires investment in computing infrastructure, chips, research and specialized talent. A company can cut or consolidate roles in some parts of its business while adding capacity in others. In Amazon’s case, the stated combination points to a shift in workforce structure and priorities—not simply a reduction across the whole company.

That distinction is relevant to workers and job seekers: an overall corporate reduction does not tell you which specific teams may grow, nor does it prove that AI is taking over every type of office work.

Most affected employees were reportedly offered about 90 days to seek another role within Amazon, with recruiting teams prioritizing internal candidates. Those who did not find an internal position, or chose not to pursue one, were offered transitional support, including severance, outplacement services and continued health-insurance benefits, according to Yahoo News Canada’s coverage.

The reported window was not a guarantee of another Amazon job, and the package should not be assumed to be identical for everyone. Eligibility and terms can depend on location, individual circumstances and applicable law.
Which teams and locations were affected?
Amazon’s public announcement did not provide a complete list of affected departments or locations. The Los Angeles Times reported that the memo did not specify where affected employees were based. Without an official breakdown or local notice establishing a particular team or geography, it would be misleading to assign the cuts to a specific department or region.
How this compares with Amazon’s earlier layoffs
Amazon eliminated approximately 27,000 positions in rounds during late 2022 and early 2023, after expanding its workforce during the pandemic. TechRepublic described the 2025 cuts as Amazon’s largest white-collar reduction since that period. The earlier reductions were associated with post-pandemic hiring and cost control; the 2025 announcement put greater emphasis on AI-enabled productivity and organizational redesign.
What the cuts suggest about office work
Amazon’s announcement is evidence that a major employer expects AI-enabled productivity to affect corporate staffing. It is not proof that AI has already eliminated 14,000 jobs, or that the same employment effect will occur across every company or profession.

AI tools may reduce the amount of routine analysis, documentation, coordination or support work needed. At the same time, organizations may seek more people to build and maintain infrastructure, develop products, secure systems and oversee AI-enabled workflows. The near-term result can be a change in the mix and number of corporate roles, while conventional cost-cutting and management restructuring make the cause of any one eliminated job difficult to isolate.
