Amazon.co.za launched on May 7, 2024, as Amazon’s first marketplace in sub-Saharan Africa. It launched without Prime: Amazon instead advertised free delivery on a customer’s first Amazon-fulfilled order and on later qualifying orders over R500. That “Prime-free” description applies to the launch, not today: Amazon announced Prime in South Africa on June 2, 2026.
When did Amazon launch in South Africa?
Amazon announced in October 2023 that it planned to launch Amazon.co.za in 2024 and invited South African businesses to register as sellers ahead of the opening. The store went live on May 7, 2024, through Amazon’s shopping app and web browsers. Amazon described it as its first marketplace in sub-Saharan Africa.

At launch, Amazon said the store covered 20 product categories and included local and international brands. The company also said independent sellers accounted for more than 60% of sales across Amazon’s stores globally in 2023. That figure was not a South Africa-specific marketplace statistic.
What did Amazon.co.za offer at launch?
Amazon’s May 2024 launch announcement described a range of delivery, collection, customer-service, and returns options. These were launch-era claims; they do not establish the current terms for a particular item or address.

For a current purchase, check the product listing and checkout details for delivery eligibility, charges, return conditions, and available collection options. The launch announcement does not confirm that every item qualifies for the same services now.
What does “Prime-free” mean now?
At launch in 2024, Amazon.co.za did not include Prime. Contemporary coverage also described the new marketplace as launching without the membership service. The label is therefore accurate for the launch period, but it is no longer an accurate description of the current service.

On June 2, 2026, Amazon announced Prime in South Africa. Amazon’s announcement listed unlimited free delivery on eligible items and access to Prime Video among the membership benefits. It stated a price of R59 per month or R399 per year after a 30-day free trial. These are the terms Amazon announced on that date; check Amazon’s current membership page for applicable pricing and benefits before signing up.
What could South African sellers do?
Amazon invited local businesses to register to sell ahead of the 2024 launch. In a July 1, 2024 announcement, Amazon Ads said eligible sellers and vendors could use Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display, and Stores on Amazon.co.za. That announcement described advertising tools for eligible businesses; it did not establish current eligibility or terms.

How did the launch fit South African e-commerce?
Contemporaneous reporting described Amazon’s arrival as a new entrant alongside established local e-commerce businesses, including Takealot, Makro, and Bob Group’s bidorbuy. That is launch-era context, not a current market-share comparison. The available launch and Prime announcements do not establish comparable present-day prices or delivery terms across those retailers.
Rank #3
- Amazon.com Gift Cards do not expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
For a practical comparison, evaluate the specific item and seller, delivery cost and speed for your address, return eligibility and process, pickup availability, and—if considering membership—the fee and benefits. Terms can differ by product and location, so a general launch announcement is not a substitute for checking checkout details.
