Amazon’s UWA5 warehouse in Tukwila, south of Seattle, closed on August 1, 2024. The company’s May 31 announcement affected 172 employees and said they could seek transfers to nearby Amazon facilities or receive support if they chose not to stay with the company.
What happened at Amazon’s UWA5 warehouse?
Amazon confirmed on May 31, 2024, that it would close UWA5, a warehouse in Tukwila—not in Seattle proper. The announcement reported that 172 employees would be affected. GeekWire reported the announcement, as did FOX 13 Seattle.
The closure was scheduled for August 1, 2024. FOX 13 cited the Washington State Employment Security Department’s WARN notice for the date. A later Washington State Office of Financial Management report recorded the Tukwila closure and 172 layoffs on August 1. The state report provides retrospective confirmation that the closure occurred.
What roles or support did Amazon offer employees?
Amazon said affected employees would have opportunities to transfer to other nearby facilities. Those who chose not to remain with Amazon would be offered support. The reports do not specify the terms of that support, identify which facilities had openings, or describe what happened to individual employees.

Why did Amazon close the Tukwila facility?
Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson said the company regularly evaluates its network to ensure it fits business needs and to improve the experience for employees, customers, partners, and drivers. That was a general statement about network evaluation, not a specific explanation for selecting UWA5 for closure. The cited coverage does not establish a site-specific business reason.
