Yes—Amazon can complete some purchases from other online stores through Buy for Me, but it cannot buy anything from any website. You find an eligible item through Amazon’s shopping experience, review the merchant’s price and delivery details, then authorize Amazon’s system to complete checkout. The outside merchant still sells and fulfills the order and handles returns and customer service.
What Amazon Buy for Me does
Buy for Me is the purchasing feature; Shop Direct is the broader experience for discovering products sold on outside merchants’ sites. Depending on the item, Amazon may send you to the merchant to check out yourself, or display a Buy for Me option that lets Amazon’s agentic system complete the external checkout after you confirm the details. A product appearing in Shop Direct is not necessarily eligible for Buy for Me. Amazon describes the distinction and current experience here.
Amazon announced Buy for Me as a limited beta on April 3, 2025, for a subset of U.S. customers using its iOS and Android shopping apps. In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Amazon said Shop Direct included more than 100 million products from over 400,000 merchants, with tens of millions eligible for Buy for Me. A separate Amazon page later described more than half a million products in its agentic shopping experience. These are dated figures with potentially different scopes, not a single permanent count.
How to find and use Buy for Me
- Open the Amazon Shopping app or Amazon’s shopping experience and search for a brand or product.
- Look for a separate area labeled Shop Direct or Shop brand sites directly.
- Open an item and check whether it has a Buy for Me option. If it does not, Amazon has not made that item available for this checkout flow.
- Review the product, seller, delivery address, payment method, shipping charges, taxes, and total shown.
- Confirm the purchase to authorize Amazon’s system to complete checkout on the merchant’s website.
- Use Amazon’s Your Orders area and the merchant’s confirmation or tracking information to follow the order. Contact the merchant about fulfillment or a problem with the item.
Amazon’s shopping assistant was called Rufus in earlier coverage. Amazon said it renamed the assistant Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. The name and exact placement of features can vary across app and web experiences.

Who sells, ships, and supports the order?
The outside merchant remains responsible for the product and its fulfillment. Amazon provides the discovery and checkout interface and says the order can be tracked in Amazon, but that does not make it an Amazon-fulfilled purchase or put it under Amazon’s ordinary retail return process. For a specific order, check the merchant and the terms presented before confirming.

An order can appear in Your Orders without being sold or shipped by Amazon. Keep the merchant’s confirmation and check its return window, return-shipping rules, and warranty terms before buying.

Does Buy for Me cost extra, and does Prime shipping apply?
Amazon’s published explanations do not identify a separate consumer Buy for Me service fee, but that is not a guarantee that every checkout has no extra charges. The final amount may include the merchant’s shipping, taxes, handling charges, membership requirements, or other costs; inspect the total before authorizing payment. The sources also do not establish that Prime membership is required.
Buy for Me does not automatically provide Prime delivery or Amazon fulfillment. Shipping options and charges come from the outside merchant’s checkout.

Buy with Prime is a separate merchant service, not a consumer tool that asks Amazon to buy arbitrary products from the web.
What information is used and shared?
Amazon says its system uses encrypted saved payment and shipping information to complete checkout. The merchant receives information needed to fulfill the order, including the customer’s name and delivery address. Amazon says it cannot see a customer’s previous or separate orders from other brands’ sites merely through Buy for Me; that statement concerns those other orders, not the information needed for this transaction.

Amazon also says shopping activity can be used to personalize its assistant and recommendations. As with any intermediary checkout, the purchase involves information passing between Amazon and the merchant. Review the transaction details and the merchant’s own privacy and purchase terms if the data flow matters to your decision.

Buy for Me does not remove the usual risks of shopping with an outside retailer. Product details, images, stock, or price can be wrong or change before checkout; a selected size, color, or configuration may not be what you intended; or the merchant may decline, cancel, delay, or fail to fulfill the order. A website change or checkout condition may also prevent Amazon’s system from completing a purchase. Amazon’s public descriptions do not promise that the feature eliminates these problems.

Check before confirming
- Is the seller clearly identified, and is the item actually available?
- Does the product page and final order show the right model, size, color, quantity, or configuration?
- What is the total after shipping and taxes, and what delivery estimate does the merchant give?
- What is the return window, who pays return shipping, and how do you contact the merchant?
- Does the purchase qualify for the merchant’s loyalty points, coupon, warranty, or other offer?
- Are you comfortable using the saved payment and delivery details for this transaction?
When buying directly may suit you better
Go to the merchant’s site yourself if you need complex customization, engraving, a subscription, special instructions, store credit, or a merchant-specific payment option. Direct checkout may also be preferable when loyalty rewards, a promotion, warranty terms, or direct customer support are important. Buy for Me may be convenient if the item is otherwise hard to find, you trust the merchant, and its total price and policies work for you.
Why merchants are watching the feature
Amazon says the experience is intended to help customers find products beyond Amazon’s own store and help businesses reach customers. Its March 2026 announcement described product-feed support through which merchants can provide catalog, pricing, and inventory information, and pointed to participation or opt-out resources.
Some merchants have publicly complained that products appeared in Buy for Me or related external-retailer experiences without clear prior consent, citing concerns such as inaccurate listings, outdated or unavailable products, and uncertainty about who would resolve problems. Those complaints are attributed to particular merchants and reporting; they do not establish that every merchant objects or that every listing is inaccurate. TechRadar reported on merchant concerns.
For shoppers, the broader implication is that Amazon is becoming a discovery and transaction layer for some products it does not stock. It may keep the shopping journey inside Amazon while directing fulfillment and post-purchase responsibility to another business. That is a practical distinction to weigh, not proof of a particular corporate motive.

Availability and limits
Buy for Me began as a limited U.S. beta in Amazon’s iOS and Android shopping apps. Later Amazon descriptions cover a broader Shop Direct and Alexa for Shopping experience, but availability still depends on location, account, app or web experience, merchant, product, and whether checkout can be completed. There is no basis to treat it as available to every shopper worldwide or as working with every online retailer. The button appearing on an eligible product is the clearest indication that the option is available for that item.
