A separate Windows 11 version ended after March 5, 2025.
That distinction matters if you paid for apps, subscriptions or Amazon Coins, or are deciding whether you need a replacement device.
Which devices were affected?

Amazon’s clarification specifically concerns “non-Amazon Android devices,” not every product that uses the Amazon Appstore. Read the Amazon Developer Community announcement for the device-scope wording.
When did the shutdown happen?
- February 20, 2025: Developers could no longer submit new apps targeting non-Amazon Android devices, and customers could no longer buy new Amazon Coins.
- August 20, 2025: Amazon discontinued Appstore support on non-Amazon Android phones and tablets. Amazon Coins were discontinued on this date.
- March 5, 2025: The Windows 11 Appstore integration ended after Microsoft discontinued WSA.
Therefore, “later this year” is stale wording in 2026: the third-party Android change already occurred.

What happens to apps already installed?
Amazon said apps downloaded from its Appstore were not guaranteed to operate on non-Amazon Android devices after August 20, 2025. That is not the same as saying every app was remotely deleted or stopped immediately.
An installed app may continue to launch, but its future is uncertain. It may stop receiving updates, fail a licensing or login check, depend on a server-side change, or rely on an API that is no longer maintained. Amazon did not guarantee continued access to paid apps, in-app purchases or cloud-dependent features on third-party Android hardware.
What should you do on a non-Amazon Android phone or tablet?
- Open the Google Play Store and search for the same app.
- Install the developer’s official Google Play version, if one exists.
- Sign in with the account used inside the app; account-based services may restore data or entitlements.
- Read the developer’s support or migration policy before paying again.
- If no Play Store version exists, check the developer’s official website for a web app or another supported distribution channel.
An Amazon Appstore purchase should not be assumed to transfer to Google Play. Google Play and Amazon use separate storefront and billing systems. Some developers may provide account migration or restoration, but Amazon’s announcement does not establish a universal transfer program.
Do not treat an old Amazon Appstore APK as an official fix. Sideloading would not restore Amazon’s catalog, billing, update service, security verification or compatibility guarantee, and an APK could be outdated or tampered with.

Paid apps, subscriptions and refunds
Paid apps and in-app purchases
There is no verified blanket rule that all Amazon Appstore purchases are lost, transferred or refundable. Contact the individual developer and ask whether your account, purchase receipt or subscription can be restored on another platform. Avoid repurchasing until you have checked that policy.
Subscriptions
First identify who billed you: Amazon Appstore, the developer’s own website, Google Play, or another provider. The cancellation and refund process belongs to that billing provider.
Amazon said customers could access subscriptions on Fire TV, Fire Tablet and Fire TV built-in products. It also said customers could cancel subscriptions and receive a refund for subscriptions extending beyond August 20, 2025. The announcement does not promise a refund for every subscription or for subscriptions billed outside Amazon.
Amazon Coins
Amazon Coins were a separate related program. New Coins purchases ended February 20, 2025, and previously purchased Coins could be used only until August 20, 2025, when the program was discontinued.

Are Fire tablets and Fire TV affected?
Fire tablets
Amazon explicitly said the Appstore would continue on Fire tablets. You do not need to replace a Fire tablet solely because the third-party Android version ended.
Continued store access does not make Fire OS identical to standard Android. Fire tablets may lack Google Mobile Services, offer different app versions, or omit apps that require Google services. Older Fire OS versions can also limit compatibility. Check that the apps you need support Fire OS before buying or keeping one. Amazon’s product category is at Amazon Fire tablets.
Fire TV
The cited Amazon guidance also preserves Appstore support on Fire TV devices, including Fire TV sticks and televisions. The 2025 mobile-Android change is not evidence of a verified Fire TV Appstore shutdown, so do not replace a Fire TV device based on this announcement alone.
Amazon’s own apps
This was a marketplace change, not a shutdown of Amazon’s Android applications generally. Amazon Shopping, Kindle and Prime Video can have separate distribution and support arrangements. Check each app independently.

What happened on Windows 11?
Windows 11 was a separate integration built on Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android. Amazon announced that its Windows Appstore support would end after March 5, 2025, and Microsoft’s current notice says WSA and the Amazon Appstore became unavailable in the Microsoft Store from that date.

For a discontinued Windows app, look first for a native Windows program, a browser version, or an officially supported mobile device. Existing installations are outside the supported WSA path; unofficial emulators and APK downloads are not equivalent replacements.

For conventional Android tablets, Google’s device information is available at Android.com/tablets. Compare Google Play availability, storage, memory, update policy and manufacturer support rather than assuming every Android tablet provides the same experience.

What developers needed to know
- New submissions targeting non-Amazon Android devices ended February 20, 2025.
- Existing apps on those devices were not guaranteed to operate after August 20, 2025.
- Fire tablet and Fire TV distribution remained supported under Amazon’s guidance.
Developers serving former Amazon Appstore customers may need to explain account restoration, subscription billing, alternative downloads and support for Fire OS separately. Amazon’s announcement does not provide a universal migration mechanism for every app.
Practical decision guide
If you already own a non-Amazon Android device
Keep the device if the apps you need still work, but move essential services to their Google Play or web versions and document your developer accounts and receipts. Do not buy a replacement solely because an old headline says the shutdown is still pending.
If you are considering a Fire tablet
Choose one for continued Amazon Appstore access and Amazon-centric use, not as a guaranteed substitute for Google Play. Confirm support for every must-have app first.
If you need the widest Android compatibility
A conventional Android tablet with Google Play is usually the more suitable ecosystem. Treat Amazon Appstore purchases as a separate entitlement until the developer confirms otherwise.

Check the service’s web version or native Windows software before purchasing hardware. A browser solution may be cheaper and more reliable than changing ecosystems.
