Amazon Air is the dedicated air-cargo network that moves packages through Amazon’s logistics system—not a single conventional airline that directly operates every aircraft. Amazon manages the network and uses airline partners to fly aircraft. Its separate Amazon Air Cargo service also sells air-freight shipping to businesses.
What Amazon Air does
Amazon Air moves cargo by air as part of the company’s delivery network. Amazon also offers a distinct commercial service through Amazon Air Cargo, where business shippers can create accounts, request instant quotes, book express shipments and track freight. The retail-parcel network and the business-facing freight service are related, but they are not the same customer proposition.
Amazon Air Cargo says it offers one-day cargo delivery across its domestic networks and international coverage in North America, Latin America, EMEA and Asia. Those are Amazon’s descriptions of its services, not an independent comparison of delivery performance or coverage against other carriers.
Who owns and operates the aircraft?
Amazon’s network role and its partners’ flying role should be kept distinct. Amazon purchases or leases aircraft and contracts with airline operators; it does not itself operate every plane in the network. In a 2021 announcement about purchased Boeing 767s, Amazon said third-party carriers would continue to operate the aircraft.

Airline partners
ATSG’s 2024 Form 10-K describes leasing Boeing 767 freighters to Amazon and operating aircraft through its airline subsidiaries. The filing says a third amended and restated agreement covered ten additional 767-300 freighters, with the initial ten in service by November 30, 2024. ATSG’s filing documents that partner arrangement.
Sun Country reported that it operated 20 Boeing 737-800 cargo aircraft for Amazon as of December 31, 2025. Its 2025 Form 10-K also says it agreed in early 2026 to operate two additional aircraft, which would bring its Amazon-operated total to 22. This is a Sun Country-specific count, not a census of Amazon’s entire network. Sun Country further reported that cargo revenue under its Amazon agreement represented 14% of Sun Country’s total operating revenue in 2025—not 14% of Amazon’s revenue. Sun Country’s filing provides the period and scope.

How large is the network?
Amazon Air Cargo’s website lists Boeing 737, Boeing 767 and Airbus A330 aircraft, and describes the network as having 100+ aircraft and 250+ daily flights. These are rounded figures published by Amazon on its current website, accessed October 8, 2026; the site does not provide a complete, dated breakdown by aircraft type and operating carrier. They should not be read as a precise fleet inventory.
Why Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky matters
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is a major Amazon Air hub. Amazon says its 600-acre hub began operations on August 5, 2021. At the facility’s fifth-anniversary milestone on August 5, 2026, Amazon reported more than 4,000 local jobs, more than 1.5 billion packages processed and more than three dozen daily flights. These figures are company-reported measures for that hub, not network-wide totals. Amazon’s anniversary release describes the site and the milestone claims.

Amazon Air’s launch and earlier network
Amazon said its air network launched in 2016. In a 2018 expansion announcement, the company described a network of 40 aircraft operating through 21 gateways and said it planned to lease ten additional Boeing 767-300s through ATSG. Those numbers are a historical snapshot, not current fleet figures. Amazon’s 2018 announcement provides that launch-era context.
Amazon Air Cargo is also a business shipping service
Businesses can use Amazon Air Cargo for air-freight bookings, tracking and international charter services, according to its official site. Its commercial terms can change: the site posted a fuel-surcharge notice effective April 6, 2026, based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly jet-fuel index. That notice concerns the freight service; it is not a surcharge on ordinary Amazon retail orders.

Amazon Air is not Prime Air
Amazon Air is the cargo network discussed here. Prime Air is Amazon’s separate drone-delivery operation. The similar names do not mean the aircraft, operating model or delivery service are interchangeable.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
The cited company announcements and filings establish that Amazon has a substantial cargo network, works with airline operators and runs a major hub in Northern Kentucky. They do not establish a complete current aircraft count by carrier, or a like-for-like basis for ranking Amazon Air against FedEx or UPS on fleet size, destinations, shipment volume, speed or reliability. Comparisons on those measures require matching dates and definitions.
