Amazon announced on September 18, 2024, that PayPal would become an additional payment option for eligible Buy with Prime checkouts on participating third-party merchant websites. This was not a general launch of PayPal on Amazon.com.
The distinction matters: shoppers may be able to pay with PayPal while receiving eligible Prime delivery and returns benefits on a merchant’s own website, but only when that merchant supports the relevant Buy with Prime integration. PayPal availability, Prime eligibility, delivery estimates, and returns can all vary by store, product, destination, and checkout configuration.

What Amazon changed
Buy with Prime lets participating merchants offer Prime-related shopping benefits on their own websites, using Amazon-connected checkout and fulfillment services. Amazon’s September 2024 announcement added PayPal as a payment option for brands integrating Buy with Prime through the Buy with Prime API.

In practical terms, a shopper may visit a brand’s website, select Buy with Prime, sign in to Amazon, and see PayPal among the available payment methods. The merchant must support the capability; PayPal is not automatically available at every store that offers Buy with Prime.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Amazon also reported that Buy with Prime orders placed through merchant websites were up more than 45% year over year during 2024, while merchants offering Buy with Prime saw an average 16% increase in revenue per shopper. Those figures are Amazon-reported results, not independent industry benchmarks. Read Amazon’s announcement.
Does PayPal now work on Amazon.com?
No—not based on this announcement. The PayPal capability applies to participating external merchant websites using Buy with Prime. It does not make PayPal a standard payment method for purchases made directly on Amazon.com.
That means “Amazon accepts PayPal” is too broad a description. The more accurate explanation is: PayPal is available for some Buy with Prime checkouts on participating third-party stores.

How the shopper checkout works
- Visit a participating merchant’s website.
- Choose an item that offers Buy with Prime.
- Select the Buy with Prime option or enter the relevant Buy with Prime checkout flow.
- Sign in to an Amazon account when prompted.
- Choose PayPal if the merchant has enabled it and it is available for that order.
- Complete payment and review the merchant and Amazon order confirmations.
The exact screens may differ. Amazon’s documentation describes both a sign-in flow and an express button flow:
- Sign-in flow: Prime delivery information is incorporated into the merchant’s existing checkout. The shopper pays using a payment method supported by that checkout.
- Express button flow: The shopper is sent through Amazon Pay, which can use shipping and payment details associated with the Amazon account.
These flows should not be treated as interchangeable. PayPal support was specifically announced for participating API-based Buy with Prime implementations, while Amazon’s express flow continues to involve Amazon Pay. See Amazon’s Buy with Prime checkout-flow guidance.
Who can use PayPal with Buy with Prime?
Eligibility generally depends on all of the following:
Rank #3
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- The merchant participates in Buy with Prime.
- The merchant’s implementation supports PayPal.
- The product is eligible for Buy with Prime.
- The shopper can use the service in the applicable geography and destination.
- The shopper meets the relevant Prime eligibility requirements, where Prime benefits are being claimed.
The cited Amazon materials describe Buy with Prime primarily as a U.S.-focused service for U.S.-based Prime members. Shipping coverage can still vary by product and destination, so a Prime membership alone does not guarantee Prime delivery for every item sold through every merchant.
Does paying with PayPal include Prime benefits?
Payment method and fulfillment are separate parts of the transaction. Using PayPal does not itself create Prime eligibility. If the product, shopper, merchant implementation, and delivery destination qualify, Buy with Prime may provide benefits such as:
- Free Prime delivery for eligible Prime members
- Applicable delivery estimates shown at checkout
- Easy returns under the merchant’s and Amazon’s applicable policies
- Order tracking through the Amazon account or confirmation links
- Amazon-connected order support in supported flows
Merchants must clearly display Prime delivery information, applicable return terms, and the relevant Prime benefits. Buy with Prime does not promise two-day delivery everywhere, and the payment choice does not override product or destination restrictions. Review Amazon’s Prime requirements for merchants.

What about Amazon–PayPal account linking?
Amazon separately announced a planned one-time linking process between a shopper’s Amazon and PayPal accounts. Amazon said that, beginning in 2025, linked Prime members would be able to receive Prime benefits automatically when using PayPal on participating sites that support both PayPal and Buy with Prime.
The cited announcement confirms the plan, but it does not independently establish that the account-linking flow is broadly available as of 2026. Shoppers should therefore treat it as a separately announced capability rather than assume that every PayPal Buy with Prime purchase automatically recognizes Prime status without an Amazon sign-in or other eligibility check.

What PayPal does—and does not—replace
PayPal is an additional payment choice, not a replacement for every other checkout method. Depending on the merchant and platform, shoppers may still encounter:

- Perfect for App Store purchases and subscriptions—get apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more.
- The perfect gift to say happy birthday, thank you, congratulations, and more.

- Credit and debit cards
- Amazon Pay
- Shop Pay or Shopify Payments
- Apple Pay or Google Pay
- Other merchant-configured payment methods
For example, Amazon’s merchant guidance says Shopify Payments can process Buy with Prime orders in relevant Shopify implementations, while Amazon accounts may still be used for Prime verification and saved information. The available combination depends on the merchant’s setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If PayPal does not appear at checkout
- Confirm that the item offers Buy with Prime. A merchant can sell other products through its ordinary checkout.
- Check whether the store actually supports PayPal. Buy with Prime does not mean every payment option is enabled.
- Sign in to Amazon. Prime eligibility may require an Amazon-account login.
- Check the product and destination. Prime delivery may not apply to every item or address.
- Try the merchant’s standard checkout. The store may offer PayPal outside the Buy with Prime flow, or it may support a different Buy with Prime implementation.
- Contact the merchant. If the site advertises PayPal but the option is missing, the merchant can confirm whether it is temporarily unavailable or restricted.
After payment, check both the merchant confirmation and the Buy with Prime or Amazon order record. Payment status, fulfillment updates, refunds, and return updates may not appear at exactly the same time in PayPal, the merchant’s system, and Amazon’s order tools.
What the change means for merchants
For merchants, the announcement is not simply about adding a PayPal button. The relevant business decision combines payment acceptance, Prime merchandising, fulfillment, returns, customer support, and integration work.
Potential advantages
- Offers PayPal users another familiar way to fund a purchase.
- Can combine a merchant-owned storefront with Prime-related delivery and returns benefits.
- May help customers who prefer PayPal-managed funding or authentication.
- Can use Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment for eligible inventory and orders from channels beyond Amazon.com.
Trade-offs
- The merchant must implement the relevant Buy with Prime capability; adding PayPal to an unrelated checkout is not the same thing.
- The business takes on Amazon-related fulfillment, operational, support, and compliance requirements.
- Prime branding and delivery promises must be presented according to Amazon’s rules.
- Amazon becomes involved in parts of checkout, fulfillment, returns, order support, or account verification, depending on the flow.
- Payment processing fees are only one part of the cost. Storage, fulfillment, returns, support, integration, and platform charges also matter.
- Buy with Prime may not suit merchants that require subscriptions, highly customized checkout logic, extensive international shipping, or a single unified customer-data model.
Before adopting the feature, merchants should compare the complete operating cost with alternatives such as Shopify Payments and Shop Pay, Stripe Checkout, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Amazon Pay. The strongest case is likely to be a merchant that already uses or wants Amazon fulfillment and has meaningful PayPal demand. A merchant seeking only an additional wallet, without Prime or Amazon logistics, may find a simpler payment integration more appropriate.
The bottom line
Amazon’s PayPal announcement expands payment choice within Buy with Prime, but its scope is narrower than the headline may suggest. PayPal can be available on participating third-party merchant websites using qualifying Buy with Prime integrations; it is not a general PayPal payment option on Amazon.com.
For shoppers, the key checks are whether the store supports PayPal, whether the product and destination qualify for Buy with Prime, and whether Amazon login or Prime eligibility is required. For merchants, the decision is broader than payment acceptance: it involves the economics and operational trade-offs of combining PayPal, Amazon fulfillment, and Prime benefits on a direct-to-consumer storefront.
