Alternatives to Borrowing GHO on Aave: What to Compare

You can avoid borrowing GHO by borrowing another supported stablecoin, using a different lending venue, or converting GHO you already hold. These routes have different costs and risks.

If you need stablecoin liquidity without borrowing GHO, the closest alternatives are borrowing another supported stablecoin on Aave or borrowing through a different lending protocol. If you already hold GHO, Aave’s Stability Module may let you exchange it for an approved stablecoin—but that is a conversion, not a loan. The right route depends on the specific network, market, collateral, available liquidity, rate and liquidation terms.

What counts as an alternative to borrowing GHO?

There are three materially different choices. You can change the borrowed asset while staying on Aave, change the lending venue, or exchange GHO you already own. Only the first two create borrowing debt.

  • Another stablecoin on Aave: The asset changes, but you still borrow against collateral under Aave market rules.
  • A different lending protocol: Both the venue and its market design change. For example, Morpho Blue uses isolated collateral-and-loan-asset markets.
  • A GHO conversion: The Stability Module exchanges existing GHO for a governance-approved stablecoin when supported. It does not provide collateralized borrowing.

There is no universal best option: availability, liquidity, rates, collateral parameters and liquidation mechanics depend on the selected asset, chain and market.

How borrowing GHO on Aave works

Aave describes GHO as a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin designed to maintain a USD peg. In the Aave V3 Ethereum market, users supply eligible collateral and borrow GHO. Unlike a reserve asset borrowed from ordinary supplier liquidity, GHO is minted through an Aave facilitator; facilitator capacity and collateral requirements constrain borrowing. Aave’s GHO documentation and its facilitator guide explain those mechanics.

The borrower flow is to supply collateral, borrow, then repay principal plus accrued interest. Aave says interest on GHO borrowing is redirected to the Aave DAO treasury; do not assume other protocols or assets handle borrowing revenue the same way. See Aave’s GHO Stablecoin guide and its FAQ.

Borrowing GHO remains collateralized debt, not a risk-free way to obtain dollars. Aave positions can be liquidated under collateral and health-factor rules. The protocol overview explains that a position with a health factor below one becomes eligible for liquidation: Aave V3 Overview.

Compare the main routes

Route What changes What to check
Borrow another stablecoin on Aave The borrowed asset changes; the Aave borrowing model remains. Whether the asset is borrowable on your chosen network and market; current rate and liquidity; collateral eligibility, LTV and liquidation threshold; caps; and the risk of owing a different asset than GHO.
Borrow on another venue, such as Morpho The venue and possibly the market construction change. The exact collateral/loan-asset pair and network; LLTV; rate and available liquidity; market or curator risks; and liquidation mechanics.
Convert existing GHO through the Stability Module You exchange GHO you already hold instead of taking a loan. Whether the desired token pair is approved and available; capacity; pricing strategy; and current terms.

Option 1: Borrow another stablecoin on Aave

If your main goal is to avoid GHO specifically, staying on Aave and borrowing another stablecoin may be the most direct comparison. Aave’s FAQ gives DAI, USDC and USDT as examples of USD-pegged stablecoins, but that list does not mean each is borrowable in every Aave deployment. Check the actual market on the chain you plan to use before supplying collateral or moving assets. Aave describes the general collateralized borrowing flow in its FAQ.

Changing the debt denomination matters. A stablecoin is not guaranteed to remain exactly worth one dollar, and your collateral may move in value independently of the amount you owe. Compare the borrowed token’s market liquidity and peg-related risks alongside the borrowing terms; the label “stablecoin” alone does not remove price risk.

Option 2: Borrow through a different protocol

A different venue can have a different market structure rather than simply a different interface. In Morpho Blue, each market pairs a collateral asset with a loan asset in an isolated market, and markets are permissionlessly created with their own loan-to-value liquidation threshold (LLTV). A borrower can be liquidated when the position exceeds that market’s LLTV. Morpho explains this design in its overview and its Variable Rate Market (Morpho Blue) documentation.

Isolation can make the exact market especially important: do not compare a protocol name alone. Verify the collateral and loan tokens, network, LLTV, rate, liquidity and any market-specific risks before depositing. Liquidation rules and collateral parameters are not interchangeable with Aave’s health-factor system.

Option 3: Exchange GHO through the Stability Module

If you already have GHO and want a different stablecoin, Aave’s Stability Module is a conversion route rather than a way to borrow without GHO. Aave describes swaps between GHO and governance-approved stablecoins and says the initial pricing implementation uses a fixed 1:1 strategy. That is a described pricing strategy, not a guarantee that every token pair is always available or that the broader market value of either token will stay at one dollar. The framework may adapt under governance, so check current accepted assets, capacity and terms in the Stability Module documentation.

How to compare costs and liquidation risk

A headline APR is not enough to choose a borrowing route. Rates and market conditions change, and a meaningful comparison must hold the relevant variables constant. The documentation cited here does not provide a synchronized live-rate comparison, so it cannot support a current numeric ranking.

  • Match the market: Compare the same network, loan asset, borrowing amount and approximate timing.
  • Check the full borrowing terms: Review the live rate, liquidity, collateral eligibility, caps and liquidation threshold or LLTV in the exact market.
  • Account for incentives and execution: Separate any incentives from the borrowing rate, and consider transaction costs and the cost of moving assets between chains or venues.
  • Understand what can go wrong: Collateral-price changes, stablecoin price deviations, thin liquidity, governance changes, chain or bridge issues and liquidation rules create different risks. The cited documentation establishes specific protocol mechanics, not a blanket safety ranking.

Before you borrow: a market-by-market checklist

  1. Choose the network and exact lending market; confirm that both the collateral and desired loan asset are supported there.
  2. Read the live market terms: rate, available liquidity, collateral parameters, caps and liquidation conditions. Do not rely on a token list or an old rate comparison as proof of current availability.
  3. Estimate how the position behaves if collateral falls or the borrowed stablecoin changes value. Leave a safety margin rather than borrowing to the maximum allowed.
  4. Confirm whether the action is a loan or an exchange. Stability Module access requires GHO to exchange; borrowing creates debt and accrued interest.
  5. Review the relevant protocol documentation and governance settings before committing funds, especially if using an isolated third-party market.
