Re:

Alphabet’s Intersect Power Deal Shows Why AI Companies Are Buying Control of Electricity

Alphabet’s acquisition of Intersect is an attempt to build AI data centers alongside new power generation and storage, reducing reliance on some grid-expansion timelines without eliminating grid, permitting or reliability risks.

Alphabet announced its agreement to acquire Intersect for $4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt on December 22, 2025. The transaction, reported as completed on March 11, 2026 by Data Center Dynamics, gives Google’s parent company greater control over a developer of data centers and power projects.

The goal is not to make Google completely independent of the electricity grid. It is to develop large computing campuses alongside new solar, wind, storage and other energy infrastructure, reducing dependence on some of the slowest parts of the traditional grid-expansion process.

What Alphabet is buying

Intersect is an energy and data-center infrastructure developer, not simply a conventional electric utility. Alphabet’s acquisition covers Intersect’s development platform, team and future projects, including projects already contracted by Google, according to Alphabet’s announcement.

The headline does not mean every Intersect asset transferred to Alphabet. Bloomberg reported that certain Texas and California projects associated with other customers were excluded. Data Center Dynamics reported that Intersect’s grid-tied power business was separated into a company called IPX Power.

Intersect is expected to continue operating under its own name and leadership, with founder and CEO Sheldon Kimber remaining involved. Google is expected to be the primary user of the resulting campuses, although the industrial-park model may also accommodate other companies’ computing infrastructure.

Why electricity has become an AI constraint

AI data centers require unusually large, concentrated and increasingly continuous electricity loads. Building servers and data-center shells is not enough: a site also needs generation, substations, transmission access, cooling systems and regulatory approvals.

Google says the time from proposal to construction for typical U.S. power projects increased from less than two years in 2000–2007 to more than four years in 2018–2023. It also cited Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s estimate that more than 2,600 gigawatts of potential capacity was waiting in U.S. organized-grid interconnection queues at the end of 2023. That is a queue of proposed projects—not guaranteed future electricity.

For a hyperscaler expanding AI capacity, waiting for a utility to complete generation and transmission upgrades can leave expensive data-center sites underused or delay the launch of new services. Power availability can therefore be as important to expansion plans as chips, land and buildings.

How the co-location model works

The basic arrangement links four elements in one development plan:

  1. A large data-center campus.
  2. New generation, such as solar or wind.
  3. Batteries or other resources to balance variable output.
  4. A grid connection for reliability, backup, supplemental electricity and potentially imports or exports.

Instead of building a data center first and waiting for distant grid capacity later, the developer attempts to build the computing load and new power supply on coordinated schedules. Locating them near one another can reduce the need for some new transmission and shorten part of the path from project approval to available capacity.

Google and Intersect described their earlier partnership as a plan for industrial parks with gigawatts of data-center capacity co-located with new clean-energy plants. The first phase of the first project was expected to be operational in 2026 and fully complete in 2027, according to Google’s December 2024 announcement.

What “bypassing the grid” really means

The phrase is useful shorthand, but it can be misleading. Alphabet is not disconnecting Google from the power system, and co-location does not eliminate interconnection, transmission, reliability rules or local permits.

More precisely, the strategy is intended to reduce dependence on some conventional grid-expansion timelines. A project may avoid waiting for a distant power plant or major transmission upgrade to serve a new data center. But it still needs to solve several problems:

  • Interconnection: The campus may still need approval and equipment to connect safely to the grid.
  • Reliability: Solar and wind output changes with weather and time of day. Batteries, backup generation, grid imports or other firming resources may be required.
  • Permitting: Land-use approvals, environmental reviews, water decisions and construction permits remain necessary.
  • Equipment: Transformers, turbines, panels, batteries and switchgear can have long procurement timelines.
  • Transmission optionality: Even a co-located site may need grid access for backup, balancing or power transfers.

Google has described co-location as a complement to transmission development and better use of the existing grid, not as a complete replacement for either.

The deal’s strategic significance

The acquisition moves Alphabet further upstream in the AI infrastructure stack. Google already controls AI models, cloud services, custom chips and data centers. If power determines where and how quickly those assets can operate, controlling a development platform gives Alphabet more influence over site selection, construction sequencing and energy procurement.

That is a form of vertical integration, although that description is an analytical interpretation rather than Alphabet’s formal characterization. The potential benefit is lower schedule risk: Google can plan power and computing capacity as one program instead of relying entirely on separate utility and developer timelines.

The trade-off is greater capital intensity and exposure to risks that traditionally sit with energy developers. Alphabet may face construction overruns, delayed permits, equipment shortages, changing power markets, regulatory scrutiny and underperforming projects. The reported purchase price—$4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt—signals a substantial commitment to that strategy.

The deal follows Google and TPG Rise Climate’s $800 million strategic funding round in Intersect announced in December 2024. That partnership targeted up to $20 billion of total investment by 2030 in associated data-center and energy infrastructure.

The Meitner Energy Center provides an early test

In June 2026, Google and Intersect announced the Meitner Energy Center in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas. The project includes a new data center co-located with new energy generation. Google said the arrangement is intended to reduce the need for new power supply on the local grid and that the facility will use air cooling to limit water consumption.

Meitner is important because it connects the acquisition to a live development strategy rather than treating the transaction as a purely financial purchase. It does not, however, prove that every co-located project will be delivered on time or that the model will solve AI’s power needs at national scale.

Does this solve AI’s power problem?

No—not by itself. It addresses one bottleneck: the timing and availability of power near new computing demand. It does not create instant generation capacity, guarantee uninterrupted clean electricity or remove the need for grid coordination.

A solar-and-wind campus may produce enough energy over a year to match a data center’s consumption while still generating less electricity than the data center needs during particular hours. Continuous operation therefore depends on the project’s storage, backup, grid imports and other firming arrangements. Annual renewable matching should not automatically be described as 24/7 carbon-free electricity.

The acquisition also buys development capability and a pipeline, not necessarily all the operational generation Google will require immediately. Its value depends on whether Intersect and Alphabet can secure permits, procure equipment, complete construction and synchronize generation with data-center demand.

Key risks and public-policy questions

Faster development can mean more complexity

Combining a data center, power plant, storage system and grid connection may shorten one part of the process, but it creates an integrated project with more moving pieces. A delay in any major component can leave the rest waiting.

Reliability may require more than renewables

AI workloads can be difficult to interrupt. Batteries help, but their duration, cost and replacement needs matter. Backup generation can improve reliability while raising emissions and fuel-supply questions. Grid imports remain valuable even when a campus has dedicated generation.

Local impacts do not disappear

Large campuses can affect land use, water resources, roads, taxes and nearby communities. Google’s Meitner announcement cites air cooling as a way to reduce water consumption, but that project-specific measure does not resolve every environmental or local-planning issue.

Ratepayer protections must be demonstrated

Google has said its approach is intended to add generation alongside new load and avoid passing costs to existing grid customers. That is a stated objective, not proof that every regional infrastructure or market impact will be absorbed by Alphabet. Regulators and communities will still need to examine who pays for shared upgrades and how reliability is maintained.

The bottleneck could move rather than vanish

If a co-located project avoids one transmission queue, it may encounter another constraint: permitting, transformers, batteries, generation equipment, financing, water availability or local opposition. “Bypassing bottlenecks” should therefore be understood as changing the development path, not eliminating physical scarcity.
