Alphabet Completes $4.75 Billion Intersect Deal: What Google Bought and Why

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, completed its acquisition of Intersect in March 2026 for $4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt. The purchase gives Google a team and development platform for building data centers alongside power generation and storage—not every asset historically associated with Intersect, and not a conventional utility.

What Alphabet bought—and what the price means

Alphabet announced the deal on December 22, 2025. Intersect develops energy and data-center infrastructure, bringing together sites, power projects, storage and data-center development. The acquired business included Intersect’s team, joint projects from its existing partnership with Google, and multiple gigawatts of projects in development or under construction. Alphabet also said the business would explore technologies including advanced geothermal, long-duration storage, and gas with carbon capture and storage. Alphabet’s announcement put the cash consideration at $4.75 billion, with debt assumed separately.

That figure is not the value of every Intersect-related asset or a measure of power capacity already operating. Intersect described its broader U.S. platform as $15 billion of assets in operation or under construction, and separately reported 10.8 GW in construction or operation by late 2028. Those are company-reported platform figures, not a description of what Alphabet acquired or of capacity online today. Intersect’s current materials provide those figures.

Why Google wants power infrastructure

AI data centers need large, dependable electricity supplies. New generation, transmission and grid connections can take years to plan and build, so securing computing equipment alone does not guarantee that a data center can open on schedule. Alphabet said the acquisition would help bring data-center and generation capacity online faster by developing them in tandem. Its investor materials also identify power, land, supply chains and compute capacity as constraints on expanding technical infrastructure. Alphabet’s 2025 fourth-quarter earnings-call materials set out that broader infrastructure context.

The strategic shift is from buying electricity alone to having greater influence over the assets and development sequence behind it. A power-purchase agreement lets a company contract with an outside generator; owning or developing infrastructure alongside a data center can give it more say in site choice, project timing, power mix and integration. It also means taking on more project-development and construction risk.

Co-location does not mean going off-grid. A dedicated power project may still need grid interconnection, utility coordination, transmission, balancing or backup. Wind and solar output varies, and storage or firm generation may help address that variability; none of this by itself establishes that a site can meet its load every hour without grid support.

What co-location looks like at Meitner

The Meitner Energy Center in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas, illustrates the approach. Google and Intersect announced the project on June 4, 2026, describing a new data center built directly alongside new energy generation. Google said the design is intended to increase local energy capacity and reduce the need for new power supply from the local grid. The announcement described construction plans, not an operating data center. Google’s Meitner announcement also says the Texas investment uses air cooling to limit water consumption.

  • Personalized Routines: Use Voice Match to access your calendar, commute, and reminders tailored to your voice.

Intersect says the site includes more than a gigawatt of wind, solar and battery-storage systems, with a minority share of demand supported by on-site gas firming. That is a company-reported project description, not an independently audited operating result. The gas component is a reminder that a project described as clean-energy infrastructure need not rely exclusively on renewables.

In practice, a co-located campus can involve several connected elements:

  • Data-center buildings and their electricity load.
  • Wind and solar generation, whose output depends on weather and time of day.
  • Battery storage to shift some electricity across time.
  • Firming or backup generation for periods when renewable output and storage are insufficient.
  • Grid connections and utility arrangements for balancing, transmission and other system needs.
  • Land, construction, cooling and related infrastructure.

Which Intersect assets stayed outside the deal?

Alphabet’s announcement excluded Intersect’s existing operating assets in Texas and its operating and in-development assets in California. Those assets continued under existing investors TPG Rise Climate, Climate Adaptive Infrastructure and Greenbelt Capital Partners. This boundary matters: Google did not acquire all of Intersect’s historical renewable portfolio.

On March 10, 2026, Intersect announced that IPX Power had been formed as an independent power producer following the sale. IPX described its retained portfolio as 4.4 GW of solar PV and 8.8 GWh of battery storage in construction or operation, alongside a wider development pipeline. Those figures describe the retained IPX portfolio, not assets transferred to Google. The IPX formation announcement explains the carve-out.

How the deal moved from agreement to completed sale

  1. December 10, 2024: Intersect, Google and TPG Rise Climate announced a strategic partnership to develop co-located data-center load and clean-power generation. Intersect’s press-release archive lists the partnership.
  2. December 22, 2025: Alphabet announced the agreement to acquire Intersect for $4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt. At that point, the company expected closing in the first half of 2026, subject to customary conditions. The announcement records the original expectation.
  3. March 2026: Intersect’s materials said it had been acquired by Google. IPX Power’s March 10 announcement described the spinout as following the sale.
  4. June 4, 2026: Google and Intersect announced the Meitner Energy Center project in Texas. This later project announcement is separate from the closing of the acquisition.

What Google gains—and what remains uncertain

The acquisition gives Google a way to coordinate land, generation, storage and data-center development more directly. That may help address timing mismatches between new computing demand and new electricity supply, while giving the company more control over project design and sequencing. Alphabet also pointed to future technologies such as geothermal and long-duration storage as areas to explore.

It does not guarantee that proposed capacity will be built on time or deliver dependable power. Projects can face permitting, financing, equipment, construction and interconnection delays. Renewable generation needs balancing, and gas firming brings emissions and regulatory considerations. Large facilities can also prompt local debate about land use, water, air quality, transmission and effects on community infrastructure.

Google said its approach is intended to add supply without passing costs to grid customers. That is a stated objective, not proof that all system-wide costs will be avoided. Co-location may reduce reliance on new grid supply for a particular project, but it does not remove the need to assess grid reliability, utility arrangements and who pays for shared infrastructure.

What the acquisition means for AI infrastructure

Intersect is relevant to Google’s AI ambitions as a physical-infrastructure business, not as a supplier of AI chips, models or cloud software. Its role is to help connect the prerequisites for more computing capacity: sites, power generation, storage, construction and grid coordination. The transaction’s significance will ultimately depend on whether projects progress from development and construction to permitted, reliable, commercially operating capacity.
