That is an analytics estimate—not a confirmed sales total from Square Enix or Microsoft—and its calculation method was not clear in contemporaneous reporting. A separate U.S. chart later placed the game fourth among Xbox premium games by June dollar sales, but it does not confirm the estimated copy count.
What is the reported Xbox sales figure?
On June 16, 2025, Pure Xbox reported a figure attributed to Lakrix of Alinea Analytics: “It has sold approximately 22,000 copies on Xbox as of yesterday.” In context, that means an estimate of roughly 22,000 copies by June 15, during the early period after the Xbox release. Pure Xbox described it as an estimate, not a concrete figure. Insider Gaming also reported the estimate and said it was unclear how the figures had been acquired or calculated.
No official Xbox unit-sales total was located in the reviewed sources. The estimate should therefore not be presented as a confirmed company result. The available reporting also does not identify Lakrix’s full name or job title, or provide enough detail about Alinea’s method to independently verify the number.
Does the June chart confirm 22,000 copies?
No. A chart shared by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella and reported by Windows Central ranked Final Fantasy XVI fourth among U.S. Xbox premium games by dollar sales for June 2025. That is a ranking, not a unit count, and it covers a different period and geography from the early estimate. The chart combined physical sales with digital sales from publishers that share data and excluded add-on content. Windows Central’s account of the chart explains its scope.

Because the two figures measure different things, the fourth-place position neither verifies nor disproves Alinea’s estimated copy count. It also does not establish how many copies sold across all regions or platforms.
When did the Xbox version launch?
Square Enix announced the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC release on June 9, 2025. The release was digital and supported Xbox Play Anywhere. The game had arrived earlier on PS5, on June 22, 2023, and on Steam and the Epic Games Store, on September 17, 2024. Those release dates show that Xbox came later; on their own, they do not establish why the game performed as it did on Xbox. Square Enix’s announcement lists the Xbox release and editions.

What was included?
Square Enix listed a Complete Edition containing the base game and the “Echoes of the Fallen” and “The Rising Tide” DLC chapters. It also listed the base game, the two DLC chapters and an expansion pass separately, and announced a free demo with save data that carries into the full game. The announcement described digital availability; it does not provide an Xbox sales breakdown by edition.
Does the franchise-wide sales figure tell us how this Xbox release performed?
No. Square Enix Holdings reported more than 204 million cumulative global shipments and digital downloads for the Final Fantasy franchise as of the end of June 2025. That figure covers the franchise, not Final Fantasy XVI specifically, and gives no Xbox unit total for this game. Square Enix Holdings’ 2025 annual report should not be used as a substitute for title- or platform-specific sales data.

Can the release be called a sales failure?
The reported estimate may be described as low only against a stated benchmark. The sources here do not provide Square Enix’s Xbox sales target, a comparable launch forecast, or a confirmed unit total, so they do not establish that the release missed expectations. The careful conclusion is narrower: Alinea Analytics was reported to have estimated about 22,000 Xbox copies by mid-June 2025, while the exact total and the estimate’s method remain unverified in the cited reporting.
