Alibaba Group is owned by the shareholders who hold its publicly traded shares. But share ownership and corporate influence are not the same: Alibaba’s management body, the Alibaba Partnership, has special rights to nominate—and in limited circumstances appoint—directors. In its FY2026 annual report, Alibaba reported one vote per share, a ten-member board and four Partnership nominees.

What “owning Alibaba” means

Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a publicly listed holding company incorporated in the Cayman Islands. Investors who own its shares own an economic stake in that listed company. That does not mean any one founder or investor owns the whole group, nor does owning a share automatically confer the Partnership’s board-nomination rights.

It helps to separate four ideas that are often blurred together:

  • Economic stake: shares represent an investor’s interest in the listed company.
  • Voting rights: Alibaba says each share carries one vote.
  • Board influence: the Partnership has distinctive director nomination and limited appointment rights.
  • Operating entities: some mainland China businesses sit within a more complex subsidiary and contractual structure, rather than being directly owned by shareholders as individual entities.

Who are the disclosed shareholders?

Alibaba’s FY2026 annual report lists BlackRock, Inc. with a long interest of 983,512,344 shares, or approximately 5.14%, as of March 31, 2026. The filing categorizes that interest as held through controlled corporations. This is a dated disclosure, not a live ownership figure or evidence that BlackRock has equivalent board control. The same report lists positions for JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup in different capacities, including beneficial ownership, investment management and approved lending agent. Those entries include long, short and lending-pool positions; adding them together and calling the result a bank’s investment stake would be misleading. Alibaba says information about non-director holders was based on public Hong Kong Stock Exchange filings or otherwise available information and is not guaranteed to be accurate or complete.

The report’s director and CEO table gives Joe Tsai an aggregate reported interest of 1.43% as of March 31, 2026. That is a disclosure about a director and CEO, not a complete founder ownership table. The cited disclosure does not establish a complete current personal ownership percentage for Jack Ma, so older or unsourced estimates should not be presented as current fact.

These figures are snapshots: the annual report covers the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, and was published June 18, 2026. Shareholdings can change through trading and later disclosures.

How much control does the Alibaba Partnership have?

The Alibaba Partnership is a management body, not another name for Jack Ma. Alibaba’s FY2026 report counted 18 members. Its members vote on a one-partner-one-vote basis, and the company says new partners are elected annually following nomination and review. Jack Ma and Joe Tsai are designated continuity partners on the Partnership committee; that role should not be confused with either person’s personal shareholding.

Alibaba’s articles give the Partnership the exclusive right to nominate, or in limited situations appoint, up to a simple majority of the board. The nominees still require majority approval from shareholders voting at the annual general meeting. If a nominee is not elected or leaves the board, the Partnership may appoint an interim director in specified circumstances until the next scheduled AGM.

As reported in FY2026, the board had ten directors, four of them Partnership nominees. Alibaba had not fully exercised its nomination right. The articles embed these governance provisions; Alibaba says amendments to the relevant provisions require approval from shareholders representing 95% of votes present at a general meeting.

Alibaba describes its approach this way: “Unlike dual class ownership structures that employ a high vote class of shares to concentrate control in a few founders, our approach is designed to embody the vision of a large group of management partners.” That is the company’s own characterization of its governance model.

Does Jack Ma still own Alibaba?

Jack Ma is associated with the Alibaba Partnership as a continuity partner, but that does not establish his current personal shareholding. The FY2026 disclosure cited here does not provide a complete current personal percentage for him. A governance role and an economic stake are different things, and one should not be used as a substitute for evidence of the other.

Is Alibaba owned by China?

Alibaba Group Holding Limited is incorporated in the Cayman Islands and is held by its shareholders. That answer needs a structural qualification: Alibaba says PRC foreign-investment restrictions mean it operates certain internet businesses through variable interest entities (VIEs) and contractual arrangements.

In this arrangement, shareholders own shares in the listed holding company; they do not thereby directly own the VIEs’ licenses or assets. Alibaba consolidates VIE financial results under applicable accounting rules and relies on contractual arrangements for relevant business interests. The distinction matters: ownership of Alibaba shares is not the same as direct ownership of every underlying mainland China operating entity.

How to read an Alibaba ownership claim

  • Check the as-of date: the 5.14% BlackRock figure is dated March 31, 2026, not a real-time position.
  • Check what the percentage describes: a disclosed long interest, a director’s reported interest and a bank’s positions across lending or investment capacities are not interchangeable.
  • Separate share voting from board rights: Alibaba reports one vote per share, while the Partnership has distinct nomination and limited appointment rights.
  • Distinguish the listed holding company from VIEs and other operating entities: owning shares in the former does not amount to direct ownership of every asset or license in the latter.

Alibaba’s 2026 annual general meeting voting results were dated September 23, 2026, but meeting results do not replace the annual report’s ownership snapshot. For the underlying filings and company descriptions, see Alibaba’s investor-relations reports and filings and its description of the Alibaba Partnership.
