On 1 September 2025, deadline-day reporting said Luton Town had agreed to sign Ipswich Town forward Ali Al-Hamadi on loan with an obligation to buy, in a package valued at £3 million. That figure was reported as the total package—not an officially confirmed permanent-transfer fee. Later Luton coverage referred to Al-Hamadi as a Luton player, but the available official material does not confirm whether the obligation was exercised or disclose the final terms.
What was reported about Al-Hamadi’s move?
The Lutonian reported on 1 September 2025 that Sky Sports was reporting an agreed loan from Ipswich to Luton with an obligation to buy. It attributed to Sky Sports News journalist Dharmesh Sheth the account that the clubs had an agreement in principle and Al-Hamadi was travelling for a medical. The £3 million was described as the value of the total package. The Lutonian’s deadline-day report is the source for those reported terms; it is not an official confirmation of a completed permanent transfer.
Was it a loan or a permanent transfer?
The reported structure was a loan with an obligation to buy. That is different from a confirmed permanent transfer: the initial report described an agreed arrangement and a future purchase obligation, but the available official club coverage does not establish whether that obligation was activated. It also does not state a final fee. The report’s £3 million figure should therefore be treated as a reported package value, not as a confirmed transfer fee.
What do the clubs’ later statements confirm?
Ipswich’s official profile says Al-Hamadi joined the club from AFC Wimbledon in January 2024 for an undisclosed fee. Ipswich’s signing announcement said he agreed to a four-and-a-half-year deal. Ipswich’s player profile and 2024 signing announcement establish his arrival and contract at Ipswich, but do not confirm the outcome or price of the later Luton deal.

Luton’s official coverage in the 2025-26 season referred to Al-Hamadi as a Luton player, including a 2026 column and a match preview that discussed an injury he sustained while representing Iraq in November 2025. Those references support his association with Luton that season; they do not specify whether the purchase obligation was exercised or what the final fee was. See Luton’s match preview and Luton’s 2026 coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unconfirmed?
- Whether Luton exercised the reported obligation to buy.
- The date, if any, on which the loan became a permanent transfer.
- The final transfer fee and whether it matched the reported £3 million package value.
Until a club announcement or reliable reporting confirms those points, the accurate description is that Luton were reported to have agreed a loan with an obligation to buy. The available sources do not establish a completed £3 million permanent transfer.
