Algeria has a significant, but dated, gold-resource estimate and is seeking partners to develop two deposits; that does not yet show it is close to the world’s biggest producers. The key questions are whether Tirek and Amesmessa can restart and sustain commercial operations, and whether any proposed partnership becomes a funded, operating project.
Does Algeria have 24.2 tonnes of gold reserves?
Not on the evidence behind the often-cited figure. An Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines technical publication reports 24,211 kilograms of contained gold in the remaining resources listed for selected principal veins at Tirek and Amesmessa, as of December 31, 2018. The underlying resources were calculated and classified in 2005 under the JORC code. The table divides them into measured, indicated, and “presumed” categories—the last is the publication’s own English label.
The total is a resource estimate for specified veins at two deposits, not a current national reserve total. A resource describes mineralization estimated in the ground; it does not by itself establish how much gold can be profitably mined and recovered. The ministry publication also describes narrow quartz veins and widely varying assays, and says MANAL Group has bankable technical and economic feasibility studies. Those studies are a meaningful project indicator, but they do not convert the dated resource total into proven recoverable metal or establish present-day mine economics.
A reliable comparison with a later estimate would need consistent deposit boundaries, reporting standards, cut-off assumptions, and effective dates. Without those, treating 24.2 tonnes as available mine output—or as a current, economically extractable reserve—overstates what the figure means.

How does Algeria’s gold production compare with major producers?

Algeria’s 2024 estimate equals 0.4 tonnes. Compared indicatively with the World Gold Council’s estimate of global production in 2025, that is about 0.011%. The years differ, so this is a scale illustration, not a same-year ranking. USGS estimated Algerian production at 147 kilograms in 2023, followed by 400 kilograms in 2024; even the higher figure is far below the thousands of tonnes produced globally each year.
The comparison is between annual output and annual output—not between Algeria’s in-ground resource estimate and another country’s production. A large geological resource can take years of investment, mine development, processing, and reliable operations to translate into recurring production.

What is happening with Tirek and Amesmessa?
Sonarem’s restart target
Algeria’s state mining group Sonarem was reported by APS on October 7, 2025, to be working toward restarting Tirek and Amesmessa in 2026 after several years of inactivity. That was a target, not confirmation of reopening. Because the target year has passed, whether it was met needs to be established through a subsequent operational announcement, commissioning information, or production data; the stated plan alone does not demonstrate that either mine is now producing.
ANAM’s search for a project partner
A notice from the National Agency for Mining Activities (ANAM) records a national and international expression of interest for a partner to form a joint-stock company to develop and exploit the two deposits, process their ore, and recover gold metal. This is an official route for seeking a partner. It is not evidence that a partner was selected, that the proposed company began operations, or that commercial production has started.

Sonarem and Lion Group
On June 15, 2025, Algeria’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines reported that Sonarem and Malaysia’s Lion Group had signed a memorandum of understanding. At a September 10, 2025, follow-up, officials described plans for a joint expert group and a roadmap for possible investments in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. Gold was one of several minerals discussed. The ministry’s account describes broader prospective cooperation; it does not identify Lion Group as ANAM’s selected Tirek/Amesmessa partner or establish a mine award or operating joint venture.
A separate reported gold figure
In February 2025, Algerian Radio reported a ministerial account that ENOR had extracted 339 kilograms of raw gold after processing artisanal mining material. That figure has a different scope and time framing from USGS’s 2024 annual country estimate. It should not be added to, or substituted for, that estimate as if the measures covered the same activity and period.

What would show that a partnership has unlocked production?
A partner announcement is an early project milestone, not proof of a producing mine. To assess whether Algeria’s plans have translated into sustained, materially larger output, look for evidence at each stage:
- Partner status: distinguish an expression of interest or memorandum from a named selection, signed project agreement, funded joint venture, and operating partnership.
- Mine status: confirm whether Tirek and Amesmessa have actually restarted, when commissioning occurred, and whether production is reported over time rather than only as a target.
- Project economics: check the effective date and deposit boundaries behind resource or reserve figures, their classification and cut-off assumptions, and what the feasibility work establishes about recoverability and costs.
- Processing and infrastructure: look for a defined ore-processing plan, capacity, and the practical arrangements needed to move ore through to recovered gold.
- Measured output: compare actual annual production with the earlier national estimates, using consistent definitions and periods. Exploration prospects, in-ground resources, and extracted gold are different measures.
What do Algeria’s mining laws establish for foreign investors?
USGS identifies Law No. 14–05 of February 24, 2014, as the legislative framework for Algeria’s mineral sector. In 2025, ministry reporting described presentation of a draft law regulating mining activities. That reporting does not establish the final wording or effective date of any replacement law, nor the foreign-ownership rules, fiscal terms, or investor entitlements that would apply to a particular project. Those details should not be inferred from a draft-law announcement or a cooperation memorandum; they depend on the final enacted text and applicable regulations.

For a personal-finance reader, the distinction is consequential: Algeria’s gold potential is a project and policy story, not evidence by itself of an investable return. A dated resource estimate, a partner search, and a restart target do not establish the funding, legal terms, operating performance, or cash flows needed to judge a specific investment.
