The 27-cap Brazil international in Colchester United’s January 2026 takeover story was former forward Alexandre Pato. He was part of Sports Alpha Capital’s (SAC) interested consortium and attended a match as owner Robbie Cowling’s guest. The talks were preliminary, however, and SAC withdrew from the proposal in February. No sale of Colchester is established by the latest cited club statement, issued in June 2026.
Who was the Brazilian in the Colchester takeover story?
It was Alexandre Pato, the former Brazil forward. BBC Sport reported on 26 January 2026 that Pato was part of SAC, a consortium interested in acquiring Colchester United. The club confirmed he attended its home match against Fleetwood Town as a guest of owner Robbie Cowling. BBC Sport’s January report described a possible deal and preliminary discussions—not an agreed purchase.
BBC Sport records Pato’s international tally as 10 goals in 27 appearances for Brazil. He was also in the squad that won silver at the London 2012 Olympics. Those credentials explain the “27-cap” description, but they do not establish that he was leading or personally financing the proposed bid.
Did Pato or SAC buy Colchester United?
No completed acquisition is established. On 13 February 2026, SAC and Aspire Media Group issued a joint statement ending their discussions with the club. BBC Sport reported the statement’s conclusion: “Accordingly, discussions have concluded.” That was a statement about the consortium’s Colchester proposal, not a comment from Pato personally. BBC Sport reported the withdrawal.

The reporting does not establish a purchase price, proposed ownership percentage or funding amount. It also does not give a verified reason for SAC’s withdrawal. Any claim that Pato was to become the controlling owner, or that a particular sum was offered, would go beyond the cited information.
What happened in Colchester’s later takeover discussions?
Colchester subsequently held talks with a different consortium. On 13 April, the club confirmed it was in “detailed” discussions but did not name the people or companies involved. BBC Sport reported links between that group and former Chelsea defender John Terry; those were not presented as a club confirmation of the bidder’s identity. BBC Sport’s April report covered the talks.

On 11 June 2026, Colchester said the parties had agreed not to proceed after extended due diligence and discussions. The club’s ownership statement is the latest cited update on that later transaction. It means the John Terry-linked discussions also did not produce a completed sale.
Why did Cowling say there was no timetable?
In the January report, Cowling told BBC Essex: “There is no timescale, the line has to be that I hand it on to the right person”. His comment reflected the club’s stated aim of finding a suitable buyer, rather than a fixed completion date. The initial coverage’s “shock takeover talks” framing captured the unexpected interest; it should not be read as evidence that a deal was imminent.

Was Pato later involved in another football investment?
Yes, but it was separate from Colchester. On 4 September 2026, BBC Sport reported that Northampton Town said a proposed shareholding acquisition involving SAC had received approval from the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League, and named Pato among the investors. BBC Sport’s Northampton report concerns that separate proposal; it does not change the outcome of SAC’s abandoned Colchester discussions.
