A lower number meant a stronger estimated position, but it was never a direct count of all visitors. Amazon shut down the Alexa Internet service on May 1, 2022, so any Alexa Rank you encounter now is historical rather than a current benchmark.
What was Alexa Rank?
Alexa Rank, also called Alexa Traffic Rank or Global Rank, placed websites in relative order using Alexa Internet’s measured data. Rank 1 represented the strongest combined result in the comparison set; a numerically larger rank meant lower estimated popularity. It described a position in Alexa’s system, not how many people visited a site.
That distinction matters when reading old reports or comparisons. Two sites could be compared within the same Alexa system and time frame, but the number was not a universal census of internet traffic and should not be interpreted as an exact visitor total.
How did Alexa Rank work?
In a 2006 description, Amazon said the rankings were based on anonymous usage patterns from millions of Alexa Toolbar users around the world. Alexa updated the rankings daily and combined two measures over a rolling three-month period:

- Reach: the number of unique Alexa users who visited a site on a given day.
- Page views: the total pages viewed by Alexa users.
The site with the highest combined reach and page views ranked first. The estimate therefore reflected the behavior of Alexa’s measured users, not every internet user. Amazon’s historical announcement also listed a charge of $0.0025 per website URL requested for the Alexa Top Sites web service API in 2006; that was a historical API fee, not a current price.
Was a lower Alexa Rank better?
Yes. A lower number indicated a higher estimated position in Alexa’s comparison: rank 1 was the top position. A high, numerically large rank indicated a lower estimated position. Neither direction should be confused with a count of visits, and the rank alone did not establish how much more traffic one site had than another.

How reliable was Alexa Rank?
Alexa Rank was useful only as a directional, within-system comparison. Its data came from a sample of Alexa users, so the result could diverge from a website’s first-party analytics or from another provider’s estimates. Archived Alexa documentation acknowledged a specific bias: “Our users are disproportionately likely to visit alexa.com, amazon.com and archive.org, and traffic to these sites may be substantially overcounted.”
That limitation is a reason not to treat the rank as a precise measure or as a current, apples-to-apples comparison with a different analytics product. It could show relative standing according to Alexa’s historical methodology; it could not certify a site’s actual audience size.

Is Alexa Rank still available?
No. Amazon retired the Alexa Internet service on May 1, 2022. Clearbit’s migration guidance said Alexa Rank data would be stale from December 2022 and directed customers to its replacement metric. Any Alexa Rank still shown in old articles, datasets, or reports refers to a discontinued service and should be read as a historical value, not a live ranking.
This website-analytics service was separate from Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant and smart-home products. The shared name does not mean the voice assistant provided or continues to provide Alexa Rank.

What are the alternatives to Alexa Rank?
There is no single current score that can be substituted directly for an old Alexa Rank. Providers use different datasets, definitions, geographic coverage, and update schedules. Similarweb is one current example in the website-traffic analytics category, while Clearbit Traffic Rank was documented as a replacement for legacy Clearbit fields.
Before comparing a modern metric with an old Alexa value—or choosing a replacement—check the basis of the number rather than matching labels alone:

- Data collection: Find out how the service estimates or measures traffic and whose activity its data represents.
- Geographic coverage: Check whether the estimate covers the countries relevant to the site and whether regional rankings are available.
- Update cadence: Confirm how often figures refresh and what period each estimate represents.
- Metric type: Distinguish estimated visits from a relative rank; the two answer different questions.
- Historical trends: Check how far back comparable data is available and whether methodology changes affect comparisons over time.
- Access and transparency: Review whether the information is available in the product interface or API, what methodology is explained, and what access tier or price applies.
Use a replacement to answer a defined question—such as comparing estimated traffic in a specific market—not to recreate an Alexa number as though the underlying measurements were interchangeable.
