The ranking combines 11 indicators rather than measuring an inherent quality called “hard work,” and some inputs are state-level figures rather than Albany-specific data.
What was Albany’s rank and score?
Snow Season Central placed Albany eighth overall, with 76.29 points. The study’s table also gives Albany sixth place for direct work factors and 43rd place for indirect factors. Those positions show that its high overall result was driven more by the study’s direct-work measures than by its indirect measures.
The comparison covered the 50 largest Australian urban areas using the Significant Urban Area measure and the latest Census data available to the publisher. Snow Season Central says it collected source data as of 8 September 2024, so this is a 2024 snapshot, not a current 2026 assessment. Snow Season Central’s study and methodology
How did Snow Season Central measure “hardest working”?
The publisher grouped 11 indicators into direct and indirect factors. It graded each metric on a 100-point scale, applied weights, then calculated an overall city score. Direct factors were worth 80 points in total and indirect factors 20 points.

The approximate weights displayed by the study give average workweek hours the largest contribution, at about 35 points. Employment and unemployment rates contribute about 12 points each; unused vacation and the share of young people neither working nor studying about 10.5 points each; and each of the six indirect indicators about 3.33 points. These are the publisher’s stated approximate weightings, not separate measures of Albany’s performance.
What do the reported Albany figures show?
PerthNow reported that the study put Albany’s employment rate at 89.5%, ranking 14th nationally, and its average workweek at 36.7 hours, ranking fourth. These are figures attributed to the study in 2024 reporting, not independently audited current statistics. PerthNow’s report on Albany’s ranking

The overall eighth-place result alongside a sixth-place direct-factor rank and 43rd-place indirect-factor rank is useful context: Albany did not rank near the top on every dimension. The study’s composite score gives direct factors four times the total weight of indirect factors, so the overall ranking reflects that choice.
How much of the ranking is specific to Albany?
Not all of it. Snow Season Central says it used state-level numbers for measures where accurate city-specific data were unavailable. It lists the Australian Census Bureau, the ABS Survey of Education and Work, Volunteering Australia, and other public datasets, but its reviewed methodology page does not provide a complete source table for each metric or all city-level observations.

That limits what the ranking can establish about Albany itself. It is a publisher-created comparison assembled from a mix of measures and, for some indicators, geographic substitutes. It should not be read as a definitive or independently audited measure of how hard Albany residents work.

PerthNow quoted Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Kristen Pyrz-Brown saying the result reflected the work needed to keep regional towns and cities operating, including business owners who volunteer, sponsor or support local activities in their free time. She also linked high employment and skills shortages to people taking multiple jobs or owners working in their own businesses, and cited housing shortages as a barrier to attracting staff. Those are her assessments, not conclusions demonstrated by the ranking.

Snow Season Central director Ed Raine said that rising costs and inflation make employment dedication increasingly important for many people.
