Alaska Says Hawaiian’s Brand Will Continue. Here’s Why Some People Fear It Won’t

Alaska has integrated major parts of Hawaiian’s operations, prompting questions about the brand’s future. Here’s what has changed, what the companies say, and what travelers should check.

Alaska Air Group has integrated Hawaiian Airlines’ operations, but the companies say Hawaiian’s customer-facing brand continues. The tension is why some people worry the name could eventually disappear: flights now use Alaska’s carrier code, the airlines share booking systems and loyalty infrastructure, and their operations have been brought under one FAA operating certificate. Those changes are real, but they do not prove that Hawaiian’s brand has been retired—or guarantee that it will remain forever.

What has changed—and what has not

Alaska Air Group completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Holdings on September 18, 2024. The companies initially continued as separate carriers, while Alaska said it intended to preserve Hawaiian’s brand on aircraft, in airports and onboard.

Since then, operational integration has advanced. The FAA issued a single operating certificate in October 2025, and the airlines moved to a shared passenger-service system on April 22, 2026. Hawaiian says flights now use harmonized flight numbers and Alaska’s code under the single certificate. Yet travelers can still select Hawaiian-branded flights in airline channels, where Hawaiian identity and Pualani imagery remain visible.

Dimension Operational integration Customer-facing identity
Current evidence One FAA operating certificate, Alaska’s carrier code and harmonized flight numbers, a shared passenger-service system, and a combined loyalty program. Hawaiian-branded flights remain selectable in airline channels, with Hawaiian identity and Pualani imagery; Alaska says the brands remain distinct.
What it indicates The companies share systems and processes. Travelers can still encounter Hawaiian branding.
What it does not establish That Hawaiian’s customer-facing brand has been retired. That the brand can never change in the future.

The distinction matters: a single operating system does not automatically mean a single public-facing airline brand.

Why the integration can feel like erasure

Flight codes are a visible marker

Airline codes appear in itineraries, booking results and flight information, so a move from Hawaiian’s HA designator to Alaska’s AS code can feel like a change in identity. Hawaiian says the change follows from operating under a single certificate; it does not mean Hawaiian-branded flights have stopped being offered.

Booking and travel systems are being unified

A passenger-service system supports important parts of a trip, from booking to airport interactions. Alaska describes a shared system as part of its multi-brand platform, and Hawaiian says the transition began in April 2026. A traveler who encounters one booking environment may reasonably see that as evidence of a deeper merger, even while Hawaiian branding remains.

Loyalty and back-office functions have also changed

Alaska’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, says Atmos Rewards combined the former Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles programs. The filing also describes consolidated back-office functions and station arrangements, integration of operational systems, and ongoing efforts to reach joint collective bargaining agreements. These are structural changes that can reinforce an impression of absorption; they do not establish that the Hawaiian brand will be retired.

Some readers ask, “How long will Hawaiian–Alaska dual branding really last?” That question captures uncertainty, not a measured consensus or an answer about what the companies will do in the future.

What Alaska and Hawaiian have said about the brand

When Alaska announced the acquisition’s completion in September 2024, it said Hawaiian’s “iconic brand will continue to welcome and delight guests – on aircraft, in airports and onboard, just like it is today.” That is Alaska’s stated intention at the time, not a perpetual legal guarantee.

Alaska’s October 2025 announcement of the single operating certificate described the step as part of the companies’ journey as a combined organization. It also said Hawaiian flights would remain bookable under the Hawaiian brand after the later system transition. Current airline information reflects that distinction: Alaska’s traveler guide says Hawaiian-branded flights are disclosed as “operated by Alaska as Hawaiian Airlines,” and Hawaiian says travelers can continue to select Hawaiian flights and see Pualani identification in airline channels.

The Hawai‘i state aviation department’s acquisition summary also described a plan to maintain both brands while integrating operations. It is a government summary of the companies’ plan, not an independent guarantee of permanent brand preservation.

What the DOT agreement does—and does not—guarantee

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s merger agreement concerns specified service commitments, including certain nonstop overlap routes. Those commitments apply if DOT grants the requested transfer of international route authorities and remain binding for six years beginning at closing, subject to conditions and exceptions in the agreement.

The agreement does not promise that Hawaiian’s brand, flight code, loyalty-program name or separate legal-carrier identity will continue permanently. Route-service commitments should not be read as a federal guarantee of a particular brand strategy.

How to read a Hawaiian-branded itinerary

  1. Check the booking channel. Hawaiian says travelers can still select Hawaiian flights in its channels, where Pualani identification remains visible.
  2. Look for the operating-carrier disclosure. Alaska says a Hawaiian-branded flight should be identified as “operated by Alaska as Hawaiian Airlines.”
  3. Expect some third-party displays to lag. Alaska says external booking sites may make every flight look like an Alaska flight and that some platforms may take time to show the operating information accurately.
  4. For loyalty questions, use current account tools and terms. The 2025 filing describes the combined Atmos Rewards program; older Mileage Plan or HawaiianMiles instructions may not reflect current account rules or benefits.

What the investment announcement tells travelers

Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its Kahu‘ewai Hawai‘i Investment Plan as a $600 million commitment over five years for airport modernization, guest experience, employee support, community investment and sustainability in Hawai‘i. This is a company-reported plan, not independent evidence that the stated outcomes have already been achieved, nor proof that Hawaiian’s brand will remain unchanged.

What can reasonably be concluded now

There are concrete reasons the integration may look like Hawaiian is being absorbed: the shared operating certificate, Alaska code, common passenger system and combined loyalty program. At the same time, current airline materials continue to present Hawaiian as a customer-facing brand. The companies’ stated position is continued dual branding; what the brand will look like over the long term is not established by those statements or by the DOT service agreement.
