Alaska Airlines’ aurora-inspired 787-9 livery debuted in January 2026, and the airline launched nonstop Seattle–London and seasonal Seattle–Reykjavík service that May. The distinction matters: London is flown year-round on the 787-9, while Reykjavík is a summer-seasonal route on a 737-8 MAX—not the newly painted Dreamliner.
What does Alaska Airlines’ new 787-9 livery look like?
Alaska unveiled the design on August 13, 2025. Inspired by the Aurora Borealis, it uses deep midnight blues and emerald greens, with flowing “aura lines” and a horizontal stripe that nods to the airline’s 1970s and 1980s liveries. Alaska described the design as a visual expression of its move into long-haul international markets. Its announcement and livery information describe the scheme as intended for Alaska-branded widebody 787s; the Alaska Native tail mark on narrowbodies and Hawaiian Airlines’ Pualani mark remain in their specified operations.
Alaska said in August 2025 that the 787-9s would debut in the design in January 2026 and that all Dreamliners were scheduled to show it by spring. On January 7, 2026, the first 787-9 painted in the global livery was reported in a company release hosted by the SEC. Alaska said artists spent nearly 1,000 hours over 13 days painting that aircraft from nose to tail; that is the airline’s estimate, not an independent measurement.
Andrew Harrison, Alaska’s chief commercial officer, said at the August 2025 unveiling: “Our new 787 exterior embodies Alaska’s transition to a global airline with beauty, grace and a nod to our heritage.”

The service was announced as nonstop, so it is a direct option for travelers starting in Seattle; the airline also presents London as a possible gateway to onward trips on oneworld and partner airlines, including American Airlines and British Airways. Connections depend on the itinerary and availability.
When Alaska announced ticket sales in December 2025, it listed a 9:40 p.m. Seattle departure arriving at Heathrow at 3:05 p.m. the following day, and a 5 p.m. Heathrow departure arriving in Seattle at 6:50 p.m. Those are local times from that announcement, not a promise for every date. That figure is the airline’s own estimate, not an independent passenger-traffic study. The carrier also said the 787’s capacity and Alaska Air Cargo’s customer-service reputation would strengthen the connection across the Atlantic; that is a corporate claim, not a neutral performance assessment.
