Alaska Airlines Flight Attendants Sue Boeing Over 737 MAX Door Plug Incident

Four Flight 1282 attendants reportedly filed separate suits against Boeing in July 2025, alleging injury and emotional distress. The NTSB’s accident findings are separate from those claims, and the cited reports do not establish the cases’ current status.

Four flight attendants who were aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 reportedly filed separate lawsuits against Boeing in King County Superior Court in Seattle in July 2025. They alleged physical and mental injuries, severe emotional distress, and other damages after a door plug separated from the Boeing 737-9 in January 2024. Those are allegations in the lawsuits; the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) separately determined the probable cause of the accident.

What the flight attendants’ lawsuits allege

ABC News reported on July 31, 2025, that Adam Fisher, Michelle Hughes, Steven Maller, and Christine Vasconcellos had each filed a separate suit against Boeing in King County Superior Court in Seattle, Washington. The report described claims of physical and mental injuries, severe emotional distress, and other personal and pecuniary damages. ABC News’ account of the filings is a dated news report, not a court docket.

Hughes told ABC News that the incident caused physical and mental harm that impaired her personal and professional life and made returning to her career difficult. The attendants’ attorney, Tracy Brammeier, said the four acted courageously to protect passengers while fearing for their lives and argued they should be compensated. These statements describe the plaintiffs’ and their lawyer’s positions, not findings by a judge or jury.

What happened on Flight 1282

On January 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 was climbing after departing Portland International Airport when the left mid-exit door plug separated from the Boeing 737-9, causing rapid depressurization. The airplane was at about 14,830 feet, according to the NTSB’s investigation page. The crew returned the flight safely to Portland. One flight attendant and seven passengers sustained minor injuries; the remaining flight attendants, pilots, and 164 passengers were uninjured.

What the NTSB concluded about the cause

The NTSB’s final report identified Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ failure to provide adequate training, guidance, and oversight as the probable cause. The board said those failures meant manufacturing personnel did not consistently follow the parts-removal process or reinstall hardware removed to permit rework. It identified ineffective Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) compliance surveillance and audit planning as contributing factors. See the NTSB’s June 24, 2025 probable-cause announcement and its final accident report (AIR-25-04).

Investigators found that workers opened the plug at Boeing’s Renton factory to repair rivets, but the work was not documented as required. The plug was closed the following day when the specialized workers specified by the procedure were not working. Because there was no record that the plug had been removed, a quality-assurance inspection of its closure did not take place. The final report says four securing bolts were missing and investigators found evidence that the unsecured plug moved upward incrementally during earlier flight cycles before separating.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said the safety deficiencies should have been evident to Boeing and the FAA and should have been preventable. She also credited the crew, saying she believed there was “one reason flight 1282 averted catastrophe, and one reason only: The crew.” The NTSB’s findings concern the accident’s safety causes; they do not by themselves resolve the attendants’ individual injury claims or establish what compensation, if any, they may receive.

What is known about the cases’ status

The cited reporting establishes that the four suits were reported as filed in July 2025 and identifies their reported venue. It does not establish later motions, rulings, settlement, or the cases’ current procedural status. No outcome should be inferred from the filing report alone; a current court record would be needed to verify subsequent developments.
