The April 2025 report behind the “Alaska Airlines dumps 4 transcontinental routes” headline described three routes ending by August 19, 2025, and one seasonal route that would not return. The available report text does not name the four city pairs, so there is no verified route list to give. Those changes should not be confused with five separate Alaska cuts from San Francisco International Airport reported for 2026.
What the 2025 report says—and what it does not
A Simple Flying report dated April 20, 2025, reproduced the next day, described three route endings by August 19 and the non-renewal of one seasonal route. It framed the changes as part of Alaska Air Group’s route and fleet realignment and noted that some Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 787-9 aircraft would be assigned to routes linking continental U.S. airports with Honolulu. The accessible text does not identify the four city pairs or provide a route-specific reason for any of the changes. Read the reproduced report.
That means the headline’s count and timing can be reported, but a list of the affected 2025 routes cannot be verified from the available text. Do not treat route names from other schedule changes as the missing four.
Five different SFO cuts were reported for 2026
In a separate report dated October 4, 2026, SFGATE said Alaska had cut five routes from San Francisco International Airport during 2026:

What the later airline context can—and cannot—explain
SFGATE reported Alaska’s SFO market share at 9.5% in 2025, down from 10.4% in 2024, and United’s 2025 share at 48.7%. Those figures describe the market in a later period; they do not establish why Alaska changed any particular route.

In the same later coverage, Alaska executives described a focus on premium travelers. Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Harrison said, “To be relevant here, you need to win with premium travelers,” and that West Coast travel often involves longer distances, making premium products more important. President Shane Tackett said business travelers had been joined by leisure travelers booking major vacations months in advance. These comments describe later strategy, not a stated explanation for the four 2025 route changes.
Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K says Alaska and Hawaiian received a single FAA operating certificate on October 29, 2025, and that Atmos Rewards launched in August 2025, combining Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles. The filing also projected 2% to 3% capacity growth for 2026. These are dated markers of integration and broader company planning; none identifies the rationale for the 2025 route decisions. What travelers should check before changing plans
The reports do not provide a current substitute-route list, fares, or a live comparison. If you have a booking or are considering an affected itinerary, verify the operating date and available options directly in current airline schedule searches. Compare:
- Whether the itinerary is nonstop or connects, and its total travel time
- The departure and arrival airports, including whether another airport is practical
- The operating date and operating carrier shown for each segment
- The fare and applicable change or cancellation terms
Because the four city pairs from the 2025 report are not identified in its available text, travelers should check their specific dates and booking details rather than assume a route was included—or remains available—based on the headline alone.
