Australian businessman Alan Bond died in a Perth hospital on 5 June 2015, aged 77, after complications following heart surgery earlier that week. His death closed the story of a figure remembered both for backing Australia’s historic 1983 America’s Cup victory and for a business empire that collapsed amid fraud convictions and financial harm.
What happened after Alan Bond’s heart surgery?
Bond underwent heart surgery on Tuesday, 2 June 2015, and never regained consciousness, his children said in a statement reported by ABC News. He died at a Perth hospital on Friday, 5 June, following postoperative complications. Hospital executive director Robyn Lawrence said staff had made every effort to improve his outcome. The reports did not specify a more precise medical cause of death.
How did Bond become a national figure?
Born in London on 22 April 1938, Bond emigrated with his family to Australia in 1950 and started work as a signwriter, according to the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. His profile rose through business and sailing: he backed two unsuccessful America’s Cup challenges before being named Australian of the Year in 1978, then supported further attempts culminating in Australia II’s 1983 win. The yacht’s winged keel, designed by Ben Lexcen, was a defining part of that achievement.
Bond’s role was as the backer of the campaign, not the designer of the yacht. The victory made Australia the first country outside the United States to win the America’s Cup, and it became the achievement most closely associated with his public legacy.

What businesses did Bond build—and what happened to them?
Bond expanded far beyond sailing into brewing, television and higher education. The National Portrait Gallery records that Bond Corporation acquired Castlemaine Tooheys, Bond paid a record price for Vincent van Gogh’s Irises, funded the establishment of Bond University and bought Channel Nine for $1 billion.
The scale and visibility of those ventures helped create the image of a bold, outsized entrepreneur, but the corporate empire unravelled by 1989. Bond was declared bankrupt in 1992. These milestones describe a dramatic rise and collapse; they do not, on their own, capture the legal record or the consequences for people affected by the business dealings.

Why was Bond jailed?
Accounts of Bond’s convictions emphasize different parts of a complicated legal history. The National Portrait Gallery says he was jailed several times during the 1990s for misuse of corporate funds and art fraud, and that he was stripped of his Order of Australia in 1997.
SBS News reported that Bond was jailed in 1997 over a $1.2 billion fraud involving his takeover of Bell Resources. It said he served three years and was released in 2000 after a successful High Court appeal against the length of his sentence. The Guardian obituary summarized the contrast by noting both his America’s Cup role and that he spent four years in jail. Those descriptions differ in emphasis and should not be collapsed into a single simplified account.

How was Bond remembered?
Reactions to Bond’s death reflected the collision between his sporting achievement and the damage associated with his fraud. His son John called him “a larger-than-life character who started with nothing and did so much,” in a family statement reported by ABC.
Former prime minister Bob Hawke also acknowledged both sides. In ABC’s report on the reactions, Hawke said: “You acknowledge the ill that he did, the harm that he caused a lot of people, but on the balance of Alan Bond’s life in terms of this nation, Australia, he will always rank remarkably high in terms of the contribution he made to this country.”
