Akamai announced a workforce reduction of approximately 110 employees in November 2008—not in 2026. The company said it covered all areas of the business and recorded a $2.0 million restructuring charge for employee benefits. Its filing does not identify affected departments or locations.
When did Akamai lay off 110 employees?
The reduction was announced in November 2008, according to Akamai’s 2008 Form 10-K. The filing describes approximately 110 employees, so the figure is an estimate rather than an exact count.
Why did Akamai cut the jobs?
The disclosure establishes that this was a workforce reduction, but it does not give a specific explanation for the 2008 decision or include a named executive’s quotation about it. Akamai said employees were affected across all areas of the company; it did not publish a department-by-department or geographic breakdown. It would therefore be unsupported to attribute the cuts to a particular team, office, or stated strategy.
What did the 2008 restructuring cost?
Akamai recorded a $2.0 million restructuring charge for one-time benefits to affected employees. The filing also reported a $0.8 million net reduction in non-cash stock-based compensation connected to modified awards. These are distinct accounting effects: the $2.0 million was the restructuring charge, while the $0.8 million was a reduction in compensation expense, not an additional cash cost.

How does the 2008 action differ from Akamai’s later restructurings?
Akamai’s 2025 Form 10-K describes separate restructuring commitments made in the first quarter of 2023, third quarter of 2024, and fourth quarter of 2025. The company said those programs reduced headcount and redeployed resources toward faster-growing security and compute businesses while simplifying its organizational structure.
The filings do not establish a directly comparable 110-person count for those later programs. The 2008 disclosure gives an approximate employee count, company-wide scope, and charge; the later filing describes strategic priorities but does not supply a matching count in the cited material.

How large was Akamai’s workforce afterward?
Akamai reported 11,382 employees at the end of 2025. In results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, it reported 11,540 employees. Those later figures describe workforce size at different dates; they do not mean that the 2008 reduction occurred in 2026.
The company reported 2025 revenue of $4.208 billion, including $2.243 billion in security revenue. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, it reported revenue of $1.100 billion and security revenue of $604 million. These figures provide later business context, not an explanation for the 2008 cuts.
