The business operates through FCA-authorised companies, is listed on the London Stock Exchange under AJB, and says customer cash and investments are held separately from its own assets.
That does not mean every message, advert or website using the AJ Bell name is genuine. The FCA has recorded an AJ Bell clone-firm warning, while AJ Bell itself warns about fake websites, social-media accounts, WhatsApp messages and unsolicited investment offers. This review separates the real platform from the impersonators and examines its protection, charges, investment range and practical limitations.
Is AJ Bell authorised and legitimate?
Yes. AJ Bell plc is an active UK public limited company, company number 04503206, incorporated on 5 August 2002. Its registered office is 4 Exchange Quay, Salford Quays, Manchester M5 3EE. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange under ticker AJB.
The legal entity operating a particular service matters more than the group name printed on a website. AJ Bell identifies several regulated companies in its group:

- AJ Bell Securities Limited – FCA-authorised under FRN 155593 and a London Stock Exchange member.
You can check the relevant company on the FCA Financial Services Register. The Register is the official source for a firm’s permissions, historic information and client-money permissions. Do not treat an FCA number supplied by a stranger as proof that the stranger is genuine: clone firms often copy real names, addresses and registration numbers.
Why are there “AJ Bell scam” reports?
The genuine company is not the same thing as every organisation claiming to represent it. The FCA has published a warning for an “AJ Bell (clone of authorised firm)” operation. The fraudsters claimed to work for AJ Bell Asset Management Limited, but had no connection with the authorised business.
According to AJ Bell’s security guidance, impersonators may use:
- Clone websites that copy the firm’s branding.
- Fake employee names and profiles.
- Paid search adverts or social-media accounts.
- WhatsApp messages and unsolicited calls.
- Promises of unusually high or “guaranteed” returns.
- Requests for passwords, one-time codes or remote access.
- “Recovery” services that demand an upfront fee after an earlier loss.
AJ Bell says it never initiates contact through WhatsApp, does not provide investment advice or stock tips through WhatsApp or social media, and does not use social-media channels for customer service or account support. An unsolicited message is therefore a major warning sign, even if it contains the correct logo or a real employee’s name.

How to check whether an AJ Bell contact is genuine
- Stop the conversation. Do not send money, identity documents, passwords or security codes while you verify the contact.
- Find the firm independently. Search the FCA Register yourself and compare the exact legal entity, website, address and permissions. Do not use a link or telephone number supplied in the message.
- Check the domain. AJ Bell says standard company email addresses end in
@ajbell.co.uk. That is useful evidence, but a familiar-looking address alone is not conclusive. - Use the official website. Start at
https://www.ajbell.co.uk/rather than a search advert or social-media link. The genuine account login begins withhttps://auth.ajbell.co.uk/. - Call an independently sourced number. AJ Bell’s published customer-services number is 0345 54 32 600. The FCA warning separately identifies 0345 408 9100 for AJ Bell Asset Management Limited. The appropriate number depends on the entity or service involved.
Never disclose a one-time code to somebody who has contacted you. If you have already transferred money, contact your bank immediately, preserve messages and payment details, and report the fraud to the appropriate UK authorities.
How customer money and investments are held
AJ Bell says cash in Stocks and Shares ISAs and Dealing accounts is held in trust accounts with UK-regulated banks. Customer money is ring-fenced from AJ Bell’s own assets and reconciled daily.
Investments are normally registered in the name of an AJ Bell nominee company or an appropriately authorised third-party custodian or nominee. Pension money and investments are held under the relevant pension trust deed and rules, separate from AJ Bell’s assets, and reconciled regularly.
This structure is intended to allow customer assets to be returned or transferred if the platform fails. It does not prevent the value of a share, fund or ETF from falling. A loss caused by market performance is different from a shortfall caused by a failed investment firm.

FSCS protection: the important distinction
AJ Bell states that the current limits are:
| Type of protection | Published limit | What it generally relates to |
|---|---|---|
| Investment compensation | £85,000 | A shortfall if an authorised investment firm fails, subject to the applicable rules |
| Deposit protection | £120,000 per person, per firm | Eligible bank deposits, including applicable cash arrangements |
The deposit-protection limit increased to £120,000 on 1 December 2025. These figures do not mean that every AJ Bell account automatically has both amounts of protection.
FSCS protection does not cover:
- A share, fund or ETF losing value.
- Poor investment performance.
- A bad investment decision.
- Money sent to an unauthorised clone firm.
The exact protection depends on the failed entity, product and service. The FCA also warns that appearing on the Register does not, by itself, confirm that FSCS or Financial Ombudsman Service protection will apply in every situation.
AJ Bell Stocks and Shares ISA charges
AJ Bell’s published ISA charges include the following:
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Shares, ETFs, investment trusts, gilts and bonds | 0.25%, capped at £3.50 per month |
| Funds up to £250,000 | 0.25% |
| Funds from £250,000 to £500,000 | 0.10% |
| Funds above £500,000 | 0% |
| Online share dealing | £5 per deal |
| Frequent share-dealing rate | £3.50 per deal after 10 or more share deals in the previous calendar month |
| Online fund dealing | £1.50 per deal |
| Regular investing | Free |
| Telephone dealing | £25 per deal |
| Dividend reinvestment | £1.50 per deal |
| Withdrawal, transfer in and transfer out | No charge |
The account charge is calculated monthly. The charge calculation shown on AJ Bell’s ISA page excludes cash held in the ISA. Other costs can still apply, including fund charges, stamp duty where relevant and foreign-exchange costs.
Regular-investing charge change
Older reviews may say AJ Bell charges £1.50 for regular investments. That information is outdated. AJ Bell announced on 27 April 2026 that it removed the £1.50 regular-investment dealing fee from May 2026.
Regular investments can be set up from £25 per month. Orders are normally executed on the 10th of each month, or the next working day if the 10th falls at a weekend. The free regular-investment rate does not make the underlying investments risk-free or remove fund, account or FX costs.
AJ Bell SIPP charges
The published SIPP charges effective from 1 May 2026 include:
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Shares, ETFs, investment trusts, gilts and bonds | 0.25%, capped at £10 per month |
| Funds up to £250,000 | 0.25% |
| Funds from £250,000 to £500,000 | 0.10% |
| Funds above £500,000 | 0% |
| Online fund dealing | £1.50 per deal |
| Online share dealing | £5 per deal |
| Frequent share-dealing rate | £3.50 per deal after 10 or more share deals in the previous calendar month |
| Regular investing | Free |
| Transfer into or out of the SIPP | No charge |
| Buying an annuity | £150 |
| Disinvestment to cover charges | £5 per holding |
Additional charges may apply to FX conversion, death or divorce-related pension payments and other specialist services. A pension transfer can also take longer when the receiving scheme requests more information or pension-scam checks are triggered.

Foreign exchange and international dealing
AJ Bell offers access to 24 international markets, including the US, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. International trades incur the ordinary dealing charge plus an FX charge:
| Transaction value | FX charge |
|---|---|
| First £10,000 | 0.75% |
| Next £10,000 | 0.50% |
| Above £20,000 | 0.25% |
Australian, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japanese and Singapore markets are handled by telephone and require a minimum investment of £10,000. US-listed investments outside a SIPP generally require a W-8BEN; Canadian investments generally require an NR301. Some account types require offline forms.
Where available, AJ Bell may use CREST Depository Interests (CDIs). A CDI is a UK investment representing an overseas-listed security and quoted in sterling. Investors should understand the dealing, custody and currency implications before trading overseas.
What can you invest in?
AJ Bell says its standard accounts offer:
- Most UK shares.
- Shares across 24 international markets.
- More than 2,000 funds.
- Investment trusts.
- Bonds and gilts.
- ETFs.
The Ready-made Pension is more limited: when applying, the customer selects an AJ Bell fund and contributions are automatically invested in that fund. AJ Bell’s terms also allow it to change the range of permitted investments. If an investment can no longer be held, it may require the customer to sell or transfer it, normally with 20 business days’ notice before selling it on the customer’s behalf.

Security and account access
AJ Bell’s published login process is:
- Select “log in” in the top-right corner of the official website.
- Enter the username and full password.
- Select “Continue”.
- Enter the one-time code sent by text or email when logging in from a new device.
- Open “Security settings” to change the password, require a code at every login, choose text, email or an authenticator app, view devices and revoke access.
The app initially requires the username, password and a one-time code. Once the device is authenticated, users can choose Touch ID or Face ID on iOS, or fingerprint authentication on Android. AJ Bell says information sent and received by the app is protected using 256-bit encryption.
Use a bookmark to reach the official site rather than clicking a search-engine advert. Check the address bar before entering credentials, and never approve a login or share a security code that you did not initiate.
Order execution: limitations that are not evidence of a scam
AJ Bell does not guarantee that a limit or stop-loss order will execute. An order may be partially filled because of low liquidity, delayed during volatility, affected by a change in maximum order size, or left unfilled even when the specified price is reached.
Orders may also fail during the London Stock Exchange uncrossing auction between 8:00am and 8:02am UK time. Spreads can widen, online quotes can disappear and some overseas orders may require manual telephone handling. These are execution risks, not evidence that AJ Bell is fraudulent.

- A share order must be large enough to purchase at least one share.
- AJ Bell may refuse an order where regulatory requirements are not met.
- If an online order is transferred to telephone handling, the telephone dealing rate may apply.
Withdrawals and transfers
Non-SIPP withdrawals are normally processed within 20 business days, although suspended collective investments can take longer. Payments generally go only to a nominated UK bank account in the customer’s name, or to an account held by one or more joint-account holders.
Changing the nominated bank account can create a delay while AJ Bell verifies the new details. Money paid by debit card and withdrawn within 60 business days may be returned to the card. Money paid by direct debit and withdrawn within 120 business days may be returned to the originating account.
These checks can be inconvenient, but they are also intended to reduce fraud and unauthorised withdrawals. A SIPP transfer may require additional information, MoneyHelper guidance or further anti-scam checks; in rare cases it may not proceed.

Claims about AJ Bell that are wrong or outdated
“AJ Bell plc is not the FCA firm, so it is unregulated.”
Misleading. The platform uses named subsidiaries, including AJ Bell Management Limited, AJ Bell Asset Management Limited and AJ Bell Securities Limited. Check the legal entity and permissions for the specific service on the FCA Register.
“FSCS protection means my investments cannot lose money.”
Wrong. FSCS compensation is not protection against falling markets or poor performance. It may apply if a protected firm fails and there is a qualifying shortfall, subject to the relevant rules.
“AJ Bell charges £1.50 for every regular investment.”
Outdated from May 2026. Qualifying regular-investment orders are now free, although ordinary online fund deals remain £1.50 and other investment costs still apply.
“Anyone using the AJ Bell name must work for AJ Bell.”
Wrong. The FCA has documented a clone-firm scam, and AJ Bell warns about impersonators. Verify the exact website, email address, phone number and legal entity independently.

FAQ
Is AJ Bell a scam?
The genuine AJ Bell is a legitimate FCA-regulated UK investment platform and stockbroker. Scammers have nevertheless used its name in clone websites, fake profiles, WhatsApp messages and unsolicited investment offers.
Is AJ Bell covered by the FSCS?
Potentially, depending on the product, service and failed entity. AJ Bell states an £85,000 investment-compensation limit and a separate £120,000 deposit-protection limit per person, per firm. Neither protects against normal investment losses.
Does AJ Bell contact customers on WhatsApp?
AJ Bell says it never initiates contact through WhatsApp and does not provide investment advice, stock tips or customer support through social media.
What is the real AJ Bell login address?
AJ Bell says its genuine online account login begins with https://auth.ajbell.co.uk/. Start from ajbell.co.uk or a trusted bookmark and check the address bar before entering your details.
Does AJ Bell charge for regular investing?
Qualifying regular-investment orders became free from May 2026. The service can be set up from £25 per month, while ordinary online fund deals remain £1.50 per deal.
Can AJ Bell refuse or delay a withdrawal?
Withdrawals are normally paid to a verified nominated UK bank account and non-SIPP withdrawals are normally processed within 20 business days. Verification, recent card or direct-debit payments, suspended investments and pension rules can cause delays.
The Bottom Line
AJ Bell is legitimate; an unsolicited “AJ Bell” contact may not be. The genuine platform is operated through FCA-authorised entities, holds customer assets through ring-fencing and nominee or custody arrangements, and offers a broad range of UK and international investments.
The main reasons to think carefully are cost, execution limitations, FX charges and the fact that investment losses are your responsibility. For scam prevention, ignore WhatsApp approaches and unsolicited offers, check the exact legal entity on the FCA Register, and log in only through ajbell.co.uk or the verified auth.ajbell.co.uk address.
