The available 2026 updates describe different situations at Porter, Air Canada and WestJet—not one newly identified airline beginning talks on October 8. They also do not establish that Canadians are broadly uneasy: no current poll measuring that sentiment is cited.
What the latest bargaining updates show
The reports cover distinct employee groups and milestones. They should not be treated as a single, comparable countdown to disruption: a tentative agreement, a conciliation request and contingency planning each mean something different.

Earlier, a December 2025 CBC report said WestJet cabin crew would negotiate in 2026, Air Canada ground crew and baggage workers would bargain renewed contracts, and Porter was continuing first agreements with pilots, dispatchers and flight attendants. CBC emphasized that “a strike or lockout is not guaranteed when airlines and the unions representing their employees negotiate.” The report cited McGill aviation management lecturer John Gradek on the potential for disputes to shut down the respective airlines, while still distinguishing that possibility from a certain outcome. Why bargaining does not automatically mean cancelled flights
Collective bargaining is a process for negotiating employment terms. Talks may continue without a work stoppage; a tentative agreement may still need member ratification; and airlines may take operational precautions before any disruption occurs. The milestones in the table therefore matter more than a headline saying that talks have begun.

Air Canada’s April account said IAMAW requested a federal conciliation officer, a step the airline described as typically used when parties reach an impasse. Air Canada also said discussions had been progressing constructively and that wages had not yet been discussed. Those are the airline’s characterizations, not a jointly agreed account of the bargaining. The July announcement of six concluded agreements is a later milestone. See Air Canada’s April update.
How to check whether your flight is affected
- Check the operating carrier’s official flight-status page using your flight number and travel date.
- Use the airline’s booking-management tool and review any email or text alerts. WestJet specifically recommends checking flight status and Manage Trips during disruptions.
- Confirm the contact details attached to your booking so the airline can reach you. If you booked through another provider, check the contact channel associated with that booking as well.
- Recheck close to departure. A bargaining milestone or precautionary aircraft parking notice is not, by itself, confirmation that your itinerary has changed.
WestJet’s July FAQ gives guidance for WestJet customers; it should not be assumed to describe the processes used by Air Canada, Porter or other carriers. Follow the current instructions from the airline operating your flight.

Why disruptions can matter beyond a holiday
Airline labour disputes can affect cargo as well as passenger travel. In an August 2025 statement concerning the Air Canada–CUPE dispute, Employment Minister Patty Hajdu said more than 40% of shipments of critical goods such as pharmaceuticals and organ tissue were moved by Air Canada. She also said she directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose final and binding arbitration under section 107 of the Canada Labour Code. That was a specific intervention in a past dispute, not evidence that government will intervene in future negotiations. Read the minister’s statement.
