Credit cards can help you travel with another person, but “companion pass” describes several different benefits. Southwest’s Companion Pass is a repeat-use status benefit earned through qualifying activity; Delta’s Companion Certificate is an annual card-renewal benefit with route and fare rules; and Atmos Rewards offers either a fixed-price Companion Fare or a points-based Global Companion Award. The right fit depends on how often you travel, where you fly, and whether you can meet each program’s qualification and booking rules.
How airline companion benefits differ
These benefits are not interchangeable. One can cover a designated companion on multiple eligible Southwest trips during a validity period; another is a single annual Delta certificate; Atmos Rewards has a fixed-price fare code and a separate award that uses points. None should be treated as a universally free second ticket: qualification, fare availability, taxes and fees, routes, and cancellation rules all matter.

How to get and use a Southwest Companion Pass
Meet the qualification threshold
Southwest says members qualify by earning 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying one-way flight segments in a calendar year. An eligible Rapid Rewards cardmember gets one 10,000-point Companion Pass qualifying boost per calendar year. That boost helps toward the points threshold; by itself, it is not enough to qualify.
Not every Rapid Rewards point counts. Southwest’s qualifying-activity rules include qualifying travel, points earned on Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards, and eligible base points from Rapid Rewards partners. They exclude purchased points, points transferred between members, most promotional bonuses, reward flights, points transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards, and other categories. Card points count once they post to the billing statement and Rapid Rewards account, and only points posted during the calendar year count for that year’s pass. Near year-end, spending is not sufficient if the resulting points post in the next calendar year.

Book the member’s flight, then the companion’s
After qualifying, the member books and purchases their own flight first, then makes a separate companion reservation for the same flights and dates. Southwest describes the companion’s travel as having no airline charge, but taxes and fees apply from $5.60 one way. The pass applies to eligible Southwest flights, and the companion reservation cannot be used as a purchased itinerary to generate another pass booking. How Delta’s annual Companion Certificate works
Which cards provide a certificate
Delta says eligible Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve, and Reserve Business cardmembers receive one certificate each year after card renewal. The certificate covers a round trip in eligible markets, with cabin eligibility depending on the card. Delta’s 2026 personal-card comparison lists annual fees of $350 for Platinum and $650 for Reserve. It describes the Platinum certificate for Delta Main round trips and the Reserve certificate for Delta First, Delta Comfort, or Delta Main on qualifying itineraries; detailed terms also specify Premium Select eligibility for the Reserve certificate. Check the itinerary before relying on it
The two travelers must be booked together in the same class and reservation. Eligible primary and companion tickets must be paid with the appropriate Delta card and/or eCredits, and the certificate cannot be combined with other offers or discounts. Delta Main availability is restricted to specified fare classes; some flights and markets are excluded. Most fares also require advance purchase and impose minimum- and maximum-stay rules under the primary fare rules. Eligible markets, cabins, and inventory vary, so a route that appears on Delta’s schedule may still not qualify.
Account for taxes, expiration, and cancellation
Government taxes and fees apply; Delta lists a range of $22 to $250 depending on the certificate and itinerary. Travel must be fully flown by the certificate’s expiration date. Delta reserves the right to rescind a certificate if the card is canceled or downgraded within 60 days of the annual-fee billing date. If a wholly unused itinerary is canceled, the certificate is reissued with its original expiration; a partly used trip can result in forfeiture.

Atmos Rewards: a fare code or a points award
Ascent’s fixed-price Companion Fare
The Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature has a $95 annual fee. Bank of America says a cardholder receives a $99 Companion Fare plus taxes and fees from $23 each account anniversary after making at least $6,000 in purchases in the prior anniversary year. That spend requirement is part of the recurring benefit, not merely an optional way to earn a welcome offer. Alaska says Companion Fare codes cannot be transferred and expire if unused within a year of issuance; an annual spend requirement may apply. Check the current issuer card terms and Alaska’s Companion Fare rules before applying or booking.
Summit’s points-based Global Companion Award
The Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite has a $395 annual fee. Bank of America describes a 25,000-point Global Companion Award each account anniversary and an additional 100,000-point award after $60,000 in purchases in that anniversary year. This is an award priced in points, not the Ascent card’s $99 fare. Its value depends on the award trip and the cardholder’s ability to use points effectively; a points award does not make a companion ticket universally free. Choose a benefit by travel pattern and total cost
- Travel pattern: If you expect to take multiple trips with the same companion on Southwest, assess whether the pass threshold is realistic. If you need one annual trip, a Delta certificate or Atmos fare code may be more relevant.
- Calendar and expiration timing: Southwest points must post in the same calendar year to count toward that year’s qualification. For annual certificates and fare codes, check when the benefit is issued and when travel must be completed or the code used.
- Route and airline fit: Match your normal destinations and operating carrier to the eligible routes, markets, cabins, and fare inventory. A benefit has little value if your usual itinerary is excluded.
- Cost to earn and keep: Consider annual fees, qualifying purchases, taxes and fees, and the value of rewards or other card benefits you give up by directing spending to qualification. Do not treat a welcome offer as recurring value.
- Booking flexibility: Understand the required booking order, fare restrictions, inventory limits, payment method, and whether the companion must be on the same reservation.
- Cancellation and companion changes: Review designation rules, account-status conditions, expiration, and what happens if the primary traveler changes or cancels a trip.
Fees, offers, thresholds, and terms can change. Confirm the current issuer and airline rules before applying and again before booking.
