The Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ 2025 annual average was down from 2024, and its quarterly increase in late 2025 also predates Spirit’s May 2, 2026 shutdown. Those national figures cannot establish what happened to your route or whether Spirit’s exit caused any later increase.
What the latest national fare data shows
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported an inflation-adjusted average domestic itinerary fare of $387 for 2025, down 1.8% from $394 in 2024. The annual figure covers the period before Spirit ceased operations, so it is not evidence for or against a national fare effect after the shutdown.
There was a rise within 2025: BTS reported an inflation-adjusted average of $405 in Q4, 9.2% above Q3’s $370. Q4 2025 was still before Spirit’s shutdown, and its average was 1.0% below Q4 2024 after inflation adjustment. A quarter-over-quarter increase can coexist with a lower full-year average because the figures compare different periods. BTS’s 2025 fare release also notes a change in its ticket sample: it used a 10% sample through June 2025 and a 40% sample from July onward. That transition is relevant when interpreting fine-grained comparisons across the boundary.
“Fare” depends on the measure
BTS’s itinerary fare reflects the total ticket value, including fees required by the carrier to board and taxes and fees charged at purchase. It excludes optional services such as baggage and seat selection. It is a national historical measure, not a live quote for a particular trip.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ airfare Consumer Price Index is a different measure. Its methodology uses standardized monthly trip quotes, mainly discount fares, and includes applicable taxes and a sample of first checked-bag charges. It tracks price changes for its defined sample; it is not a live fare or a direct estimate of Spirit’s effect on a particular route. BLS explains its airfare measurement method.
What happened to Spirit Airlines
Spirit ceased operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling all flights. In its SEC-filed shutdown announcement, the company cited a sudden, sustained increase in fuel prices alongside other pressures, after restructuring efforts and an inability to secure additional funding. Those factors explain the company’s stated reason for winding down; they do not by themselves show how much its departure changed competitors’ fares. Read Spirit’s SEC-filed announcement.

Could Spirit’s exit make some flights more expensive?
Yes, it is plausible. When a low-cost airline stops competing on a route, the remaining airlines face less direct pressure to match its prices. The Government Accountability Office says robust airline competition can promote lower fares and more travel options. That general mechanism supports the possibility of upward pressure where Spirit was an important rival, but it is not a measured estimate of what happened after the shutdown. The effect would not necessarily be uniform. Routes where Spirit offered a substantial alternative could face a different competitive change from routes where it had little presence. Fares also respond to factors such as fuel costs, seasonal demand and available capacity. The available national statistics do not establish route-by-route post-shutdown changes or separate Spirit’s exit from those other influences.

How to tell whether your own fare changed
Compare like with like rather than relying on a national average. For a useful comparison, hold constant:
- Travel dates and booking timing.
- The same origin and destination airports, including which airport you use in cities with multiple airports.
- Whether the itinerary is nonstop or connecting, and the number and duration of connections.
- Ticket restrictions and the services included in the fare.
- The full price, separating required charges from optional baggage, seat-selection and other add-on fees.
DOT’s quarterly Domestic Airfare Consumer Report provides historical market and carrier averages, not live ticket prices. DOT cautions that airline prices fluctuate and reported averages may not match current fares. Differences between airports or between nonstop and connecting itineraries can also make comparisons misleading. Use DOT’s report for historical comparisons, not as a substitute for checking the same itinerary and its current total price.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
DOT reported temporary rebooking caps and other fare measures from carriers immediately after Spirit stopped flying, including measures on overlapping routes and short-lived offers. These were limited responses, not proof that fares remained unchanged or that offers are still available. DOT’s shutdown-response announcement describes those temporary measures.
The available BTS fare series ends at Q4 2025, before the May 2026 shutdown. It therefore cannot answer whether national fares or fares on Spirit-overlap routes rose afterward, much less establish that Spirit’s departure caused a change. A credible assessment would need comparable post-shutdown fare and capacity data, route-level comparisons, and a way to account for fuel prices, seasonality, demand and other capacity changes.
