Contemporaneous ITV News reporting put the number of employees transferring to Airbus at about 2,800 across Belfast and Prestwick—but that is a reported transfer estimate, not an independently verified count of net jobs saved or a promise of future employment. Airbus’s own closing announcement gave a different figure: more than 4,000 colleagues across all the acquired operations worldwide.
What the “almost 3,000 UK jobs” figure means
ITV News reported that around 1,600 employees in Belfast and a further 1,200 in Scotland transferred to Airbus, adding up to approximately 2,800 people in the UK. The figures are estimates reported at the time of closing, not a UK-only headcount published by Airbus. ITV News / UTV, 8 December 2025.
“Saved” is stronger than the evidence supports. The transaction records show employees transferring with operations to new owners; they do not establish how many positions would otherwise have disappeared, calculate a net jobs-preserved total, or guarantee that employment will continue at a particular level.
At closing, Airbus said it welcomed more than 4,000 colleagues across all acquired operations internationally. That is Airbus’s global total, not a UK figure. Airbus, 8 December 2025.

Which UK operations went to Airbus and Boeing?
The UK operations were divided by location and work package; Belfast did not transfer entirely to Airbus.

The Airbus and Boeing counts describe different parts of the transaction and should not be combined as an Airbus UK jobs figure. They also come from different sources: ITV’s approximate Airbus transfer estimates and Boeing’s employee figures for its UK operations.

What Airbus acquired outside the UK
The UK carve-out was part of a larger international package of Airbus-related production operations. At closing, Airbus listed:
- A350 fuselage sections in Kinston, North Carolina, and Saint-Nazaire, France.
- A321 and A220 components in Casablanca, Morocco.
- A220 wing production in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
- A320 and A350 wing-component production in Prestwick, Scotland.
- A220 pylon production transferred from Wichita, Kansas, with production due to move to Toulouse, France.
These operations are part of the context for Airbus’s more-than-4,000 global colleague figure; they are not part of the approximately 2,800 UK estimate. Airbus, 8 December 2025.

How the deal developed
- 1 July 2024: Airbus announced a binding term sheet for a potential acquisition of Airbus-related production activities at several Spirit sites. The proposal included nominal consideration of $1 and $559 million in compensation from Spirit, subject to adjustments and the final transaction perimeter. Due diligence and definitive agreements were still outstanding, and completion was not guaranteed. Airbus, 1 July 2024.
- 28 April 2025: Airbus announced the definitive agreement, with a revised $439 million compensation figure. It included the Belfast A220 mid-fuselage work unless a suitable buyer was found. Airbus also disclosed $200 million in non-interest-bearing credit lines to support Airbus programmes at Spirit. Airbus, 28 April 2025.
- 3 July 2025: Spirit’s SEC filing recorded that sale processes for the Prestwick Airbus work and Belfast A220 mid-fuselage work had been abandoned, so those assets would be included in the Airbus closing, subject to the agreement. Spirit AeroSystems, SEC filing, 3 July 2025.
- 8 December 2025: Airbus announced that the acquisition had closed. It said it received $439 million, subject to ordinary purchase-price adjustments and post-closing review, as well as certain amounts to settle liabilities. Why Airbus took over the work—and what the financial terms do not mean
Airbus described the acquisition as a way to secure stable supply for its commercial aircraft programmes by bringing key Airbus work packages into its own operations. That is the company’s stated rationale. Airbus, 28 April 2025.
The transaction figures changed as the deal moved from proposal to completion. The $559 million amount was the July 2024 term-sheet proposal; Airbus announced revised compensation of $439 million in April 2025 and said at closing that it received that amount, subject to adjustments and review. These are compensation terms for the transaction, not a purchase price that can be summarized as Airbus “buying Spirit for $439 million.” The closing announcement also referred to amounts for settling liabilities.
