Airbus still plans to use an A380 to flight-test an open-fan engine, CEO Guillaume Faury said on 19 February 2026. The aircraft’s size makes it useful for testing a large engine with safety and instrumentation capabilities, but Faury also called it “a very large and expensive aircraft.” He gave no flight date and said Airbus had not decided whether the A380 would have a test role after the open-fan work.
Is Airbus still planning an A380 open-fan test?
Yes. At Airbus’s annual press conference in Toulouse on 19 February 2026, Faury said the company was preparing to test an open-fan engine on its A380 test aircraft. He did not give a date, saying he did not have the detailed planning available. Airbus’s press-conference transcript is the most direct public statement on the plan.
Open-fan, also called open-rotor, describes an engine design with exposed fan blades rather than a conventional surrounding fan duct. Airbus’s stated plan is a flight demonstration; Faury’s remarks do not establish that the test has already taken place.
Why use such a large aircraft as an engine testbed?
Faury’s central point was relative scale: a large engine can be installed on the A380 while remaining small compared with the aircraft. He said that arrangement is convenient for safety and testing capabilities. The aircraft also allows engineers to assess how the engine behaves as part of an operating aircraft, rather than evaluating propulsion in isolation.

Airbus’s technical account of the demonstrator, published in 2022, describes the work planned around the installation:
- Engine and airframe integration: An under-wing installation and customised pylon, with analysis of aircraft structure, systems, aerodynamics, thrust, drag and loads.
- Flight and propulsion controls: Work on power management, engine controls, flight-control optimisation and fuel distribution.
- Vibration and noise: Evaluation of vibration and internal and external noise.
- Instrumentation: Airbus described hundreds of sensors, including microphones, accelerometers and static-pressure sensors, as well as cameras and workstations for flight-test engineers and technicians.
Airbus also listed propulsion efficiency and performance, collaboration with CFM on hybrid-electric capabilities, and compatibility with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) among the program’s objectives. These are planned evaluation areas, not reported results from completed flight tests.

What makes the A380 expensive?
Faury described the A380 as “very large and expensive,” but the press-conference transcript gives no operating-cost figure. Airbus’s description of the planned modifications helps explain the practical burden: the demonstrator involves a customised engine installation, aircraft and control-system analysis, extensive instrumentation and a flight-test team. That is evidence of substantial engineering work, not a published dollar estimate or a comparison with other testbeds.
As a result, the public statement supports a qualitative conclusion only: Airbus sees the aircraft’s scale and capabilities as useful, while acknowledging that a very large aircraft is expensive. It does not say how much an hour of testing costs, what the campaign’s total budget is or how the cost compares with another platform.

Is there a firm test-flight date or a longer-term A380 plan?
No firm flight date was announced in February 2026. Faury said he could not provide one because he did not have detailed planning in mind. He also said Airbus had not decided whether to keep using the A380 as a testbed after the open-fan campaign. That leaves both the schedule and any post-campaign role unsettled.
Airbus’s 2022 article projected a second phase of flight tests at its Toulouse facility in the second half of that decade. That was a dated projection, not a current confirmed schedule; Faury’s 2026 answer did not replace it with a specific date.

How does the open-fan plan relate to Airbus’s hydrogen A380 concept?
They are different test efforts, so a change to one does not by itself cancel the other. Airbus had previously discussed using a modified A380 for hydrogen combustion and fuel-cell propulsion research. Aviation Week’s 2022 report described that earlier concept, including a planned 2.1-megawatt fuel-cell powerplant. That figure refers to the historical hydrogen program’s planned equipment, not a measured result or specification for the open-fan demonstration.
Aviation Week & Space Technology reported in its 24 February–9 March 2025 issue that Airbus had canceled or postponed the hydrogen-electric A380 flight demonstration and described a SAF-based demonstration involving CFM’s RISE open-fan engine and a later-selected ducted turbofan under Clean Aviation. The report is context for how the A380 plans evolved; Faury’s 2026 statement is the direct evidence that the open-fan test remained planned. Read the 2025 issue report.
