Air China’s report calls it the aircraft’s first intended user, but the agreement does not establish a firm purchase order, aircraft quantity, delivery schedule or service-entry date. Separately, COMAC announced that the ARJ21 would be marketed as the C909, while official Chinese military reporting identified the J-35A as an airshow debut and the J-15T as a participating aircraft.
Is Air China the C929 launch customer?
In qualified terms: Air China is the C929’s first intended user under a framework agreement, according to the airline’s 2024 Sustainability & ESG Report. COMAC and Air China signed the agreement at the exhibition on November 12, 2024. Calling Air China a “launch customer” can summarize that first-user role, but should not be read as confirmation of a firm aircraft order.
The report identifies the agreement as a framework agreement, not a purchase contract. It does not state an aircraft quantity, price, delivery date or entry-into-service date. The available information therefore establishes intended-user status, not a committed delivery customer.
What is the COMAC C929?
The C929 is COMAC’s widebody passenger aircraft program. COMAC’s current C929 product page lists a baseline seating range of 282–440. That specification describes the product page’s baseline aircraft; it does not establish the program’s latest design milestone or resolve Air China’s order status.

What aircraft debuted or participated at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow?
The 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition—Airshow China 2024, also known as the Zhuhai Airshow—ran November 12–17, 2024, in Zhuhai, Guangdong. Official Chinese military reporting distinguished between an announced debut and an aircraft arriving to participate:

These reports support describing the J-35A as the announced debut and the J-15T as a participant; they do not establish that these were the only new military aircraft at the show or support broader comparisons of their capabilities.

Why was the aircraft family name C909 announced separately?
At a product conference during the exhibition, COMAC announced ARJ21’s commercial name as C909 and adopted a “COMAC + Model” naming convention for its commercial aircraft. Its November 20, 2024 announcement listed the family as COMAC C909, COMAC C919 and COMAC C929. In COMAC’s words: “At this point, the names of the three commercial aircraft products of COMAC are ‘COMAC C909’, ‘COMAC C919’ and ‘COMAC C929’, respectively.” COMAC News Center
The naming announcement is distinct from Air China’s C929 framework agreement. COMAC also reported in November 2024 that 150 C909 aircraft had been delivered and that they had carried more than 17 million passengers since the model entered commercial operation in 2016; those are COMAC’s figures as of that report, not current totals.

How large was Airshow China 2024?
In its November 18, 2024 post-show report, China Military Online, the Ministry of National Defense’s news outlet, said the exhibition drew 1,022 participating companies from 47 countries and regions, displayed 261 aircraft and 248 types of ground equipment, and attracted nearly 590,000 visitors. The same report cited approximately 285.6 billion yuan in signed agreements and sales of 1,195 aircraft of various types, but did not break down those totals by exhibitor or transaction.
