In a schedule update reported in March 2025, Air Canada planned fewer summer flights from Vancouver to Washington Dulles, Houston, and Miami. The reported peak-season schedule called for five weekly departures to Dulles, six to Houston, and three to Miami. These were historical plans, not confirmation of flights that operated or of current schedules.
Which Vancouver–U.S. routes were reduced?
Open Jaw reported on March 24, 2025, that Air Canada planned to reduce weekly departures on three routes during parts of summer 2025. The figures below describe the reported June–August peak-season plan, not a current timetable.
| Route | Reported weekly reduction | Reported peak-season total |
|---|---|---|
| Vancouver–Washington Dulles (IAD) | Two flights | Five flights per week |
| Vancouver–Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | One flight | Six flights per week |
| Vancouver–Miami (MIA) | One flight | Three flights per week |
Open Jaw said the September and October plans appeared unchanged: daily Houston service and four weekly flights to Miami. It did not report a corresponding September–October Dulles frequency in the cited account. The same report noted that Air Canada had restored Vancouver–Dulles service in June 2023 after it had been absent since August 2004. Open Jaw’s March 24, 2025 report described planned schedules; it does not independently establish what flights ultimately operated.
Were the cuts caused by Trump-related backlash?
The reductions were reported amid political tension, tariff controversy, and declining Canadian travel to the United States, but the available evidence does not establish that backlash to President Trump directly caused these three route decisions.

In February 2025, Air Canada said it was not then seeing reduced U.S. travel, while monitoring the situation. Mark Galardo, the airline’s executive vice president for revenue and network planning, said, “We are anticipating that there could be a slowdown.” That was a forecast, not a stated explanation for the Vancouver schedule changes. The Associated Press reported the comments in February 2025.
Air Canada’s 2025 annual information form later said transborder demand had declined and transborder capacity was down 8% compared with 2024, attributing the capacity change to a softer U.S. market, particularly for leisure destinations. That is airline-wide context, not a route-specific explanation. The filing also notes that Air Canada launched Vancouver service to Nashville, Tampa, and Raleigh–Durham in 2025, so the wider network included new routes as well as frequency reductions. What do later travel figures show?
Statistics Canada figures reported by AP indicate that Canadian residents made 25% fewer return border crossings and spent CA$3.3 billion less on travel to the United States in 2025 than in 2024. AP also reported that air travel to the U.S. remained below year-earlier levels in every month through June 2026. These are broad travel measures, not Air Canada passenger counts or evidence about the cause of any single route adjustment. AP’s September 2026 report
Do not confuse the 2025 changes with later schedule updates
Air Canada issued a separate notice on April 23, 2026, attributing later schedule adjustments to jet fuel prices that had doubled since the Iran conflict began. It listed route suspensions, but not the three Vancouver routes in the 2025 report, and said the planned annual capacity impact was approximately 1% of ASMs. The notice is not an explanation for the earlier frequency reductions. AeroRoutes also described separate 2026 schedule changes, including a shortened seasonal Vancouver–Raleigh/Durham schedule and frequency adjustments on Vancouver–Miami and Vancouver–Seattle. Those later changes should not be folded into the March 2025 report. AeroRoutes’ May 2026 schedule analysis

The reported numbers are historical and do not confirm current flight frequency or availability. For alternatives, compare the destination airport, travel date, and whether the itinerary is nonstop or connecting; the schedule evidence here does not establish current options.
