To assess an AI stock, separate what a company has already earned from what management expects, then test that growth story against margins, customer demand, investment needs, and the price investors are paying. An earnings report can show whether a business is growing; it cannot, by itself, establish that its shares are attractively valued.
Start by separating results, guidance, and expectations
Read the earnings release with the filing and earnings-call transcript. Identify the reporting period, fiscal-year convention, segment definitions, currency basis, and accounting measure before comparing figures. A reported result describes a completed period. Management guidance is an outlook, not a promise; analyst estimates are separate forecasts and should be attributed to their source and date.
For each growth figure, check whether it is year over year or sequential, whether it covers a segment or the whole company, and whether it is reported or constant-currency growth. For earnings, distinguish GAAP results from non-GAAP or adjusted results and review the reconciliation. Changes in adjustments can make otherwise similar periods less comparable: NVIDIA said it would include stock-based compensation expense in non-GAAP measures beginning in FY2027 Q1.
Example: NVIDIA’s results versus its outlook
NVIDIA reported fiscal Q2 2027 Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. For fiscal Q3 2027, the company guided to total revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%; that outlook excluded Data Center compute revenue from China. The first figure is a reported segment result; the second is company guidance for total-company revenue, not a consensus estimate or guarantee. NVIDIA’s earnings release

On its August 26, 2026 earnings call, CFO Colette Kress said, “We expect to grow revenue by approximately 70% in fiscal 2028. This is a supply-constrained outlook.” That is management’s outlook for a specified fiscal year, with a stated constraint—not a realized growth rate or independent forecast. Test the growth story against operating evidence
A strong headline growth rate matters more when it is supported by evidence that the business can convert demand into profitable, cash-generating sales. Read segment revenue alongside total-company results, gross and operating margins, and cash flow. Look for changes in the mix of products, customers, and contracts; the same growth rate can have different implications when the underlying business mix differs.

- Revenue quality: Identify which segments and products drive growth, and whether growth is broad-based or concentrated.
- Margins: Track whether gross and operating margins hold up as the company scales. Infrastructure, energy, depreciation, and operating costs can rise alongside AI revenue.
- Customer concentration: A large customer can contribute materially to results, while also making future growth more dependent on that buyer’s spending.
- Bookings and remaining performance obligations: These can indicate contracted demand, but are not equivalent to current revenue. Check definitions, expected timing, cancellation terms where disclosed, and customer concentration.
- Cash generation: Compare operating cash flow and other cash measures with earnings and capital investment. Earnings growth does not automatically mean the company is generating ample cash after investment.
NVIDIA disclosed that one direct customer accounted for 16% of total revenue in fiscal Q2 2027. The company also warned that shortages of land, power, data-center shells, or capital could affect customer and partner buildouts and its own future financial performance. A large demand signal therefore needs to be considered alongside the customer and infrastructure dependencies behind it. NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2027 Form 10-Q
Microsoft reported $625 billion of commercial remaining performance obligations, up 110%, in its fiscal Q2 2026 release published January 28, 2026. RPO represents contracted future performance rather than revenue already recognized. Its interpretation depends on the company’s definition, timing, and concentration disclosures, so a raw RPO comparison across companies may be misleading. Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 2026 release
Compare investment spending with returns
Capital expenditure (capex) is money invested in assets such as data centers and equipment. It is not revenue, profit, or proof that the investment will earn an adequate return. Follow the spending through to capacity coming online, utilization, revenue, margins, and cash generation; also consider how depreciation and operating costs affect results.
On its fiscal Q3 2026 call, Microsoft projected approximately $190 billion of calendar 2026 capital expenditures, including about $25 billion attributable to higher component prices. The company said Azure growth could vary with capacity timing and contract mix. It also expected Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage to be roughly 64%, down year over year amid AI investment and increased Copilot usage. These are company projections and expectations, not completed results. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 earnings-call materials

Alphabet’s FY2025 Form 10-K cautioned that incorporating AI into products such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, as well as enterprise AI solutions, may change monetization and affect revenue growth rates and margin trends. The filing also said infrastructure investment would increase significantly in 2026 relative to 2025, with depreciation, energy, equipment, and network-capacity costs expected to rise significantly. Product adoption is not the same thing as monetized revenue, and revenue growth does not guarantee stable margins. Alphabet’s FY2025 Form 10-K
Normalize bookings and growth across uneven quarters
A single quarter can be distorted by large contracts, timing, and capacity constraints. Microsoft’s FY2026 Q2 call noted that a significant multiyear OpenAI contract could create quarterly volatility in bookings and RPO growth. It also said Azure growth could vary with the timing of capacity delivery and when capacity comes online, as well as in-period revenue recognition based on contract mix. Compare like periods and examine the company’s definitions before treating one quarter’s bookings or growth rate as a durable trend. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 earnings-call materials

Relate growth expectations to stock valuation
The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is the current share price divided by earnings per share (EPS). Investor.gov describes trailing P/E using EPS from the past 12 months and explains that investors use the ratio to compare a company’s price with its history or other companies. P/E is a context-dependent summary measure, not a stand-alone judgment about whether a stock is cheap or expensive. Investor.gov’s explanation of the P/E ratio
Forward P/E uses forecast earnings rather than completed results. To make that figure interpretable, identify the forecast provider, the date and fiscal period, and whether EPS is GAAP or adjusted. Then ask what growth and margin assumptions are embedded in the price. A higher multiple may reflect expectations of durable, profitable growth—or it may depend on optimistic assumptions that fail to materialize.
A responsible valuation comparison also needs a date-stamped share price, diluted share count or market capitalization, a consistent earnings measure and forecast period, and an assessment of balance-sheet and execution risks. Compare companies on matching periods and accounting bases; account for differences in business mix before treating their multiples as directly comparable. Growth alone cannot establish that a company is fairly valued.
A practical checklist for reading an AI earnings report
- Set the baseline: Record the quarter, fiscal year, segment definitions, currency basis, and accounting measures.
- Label each number: Mark it as reported performance, management guidance, or an outside estimate; include its period and whether it is year-over-year or sequential.
- Trace the growth: Review segment and total revenue, margins, customer concentration, bookings or RPO, and cash generation.
- Check delivery capacity: Look for supply, power, facility, and capital constraints that could affect the timing or scale of revenue.
- Track investment and payoff: Compare capex with subsequent utilization, revenue, margins, and cash flow, including the effects of depreciation and operating costs.
- Normalize comparisons: Align periods, contract mix, definitions, accounting measures, and capex treatment before comparing companies or quarters.
- Connect expectations to price: Use a clearly defined valuation measure and date, and state the earnings forecast and assumptions behind it.
Company outlooks and reported figures change with each filing, and valuation ratios change with share prices and estimates. Treat every dated figure above as tied to its named period and source rather than as a current forecast or a personal investment recommendation.
