AI-powered threat detection can add analysis of behavior and unusual patterns to established security monitoring, but the available NIST guidance does not show that AI is categorically more accurate, faster, or cheaper. The practical choice is not simply “AI or traditional”: assess what data each approach can see, how analysts review alerts, how the system is tested, and how findings feed into response.
What traditional security monitoring and AI-powered detection mean
Traditional monitoring
Traditional security monitoring covers tools and processes that collect and examine activity to identify possible intrusions. NIST’s 2007 Guide to Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (SP 800-94) describes four types of intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS): network-based, wireless, network behavior analysis, and host-based. Security information and event management (SIEM) is discussed as complementary technology, not as a fifth IDPS class.
SP 800-94 is useful for this taxonomy, but it is not current operational guidance: NIST says the draft revision issued in 2012 never became final and was retired in 2022.
AI-powered detection
“AI-powered threat detection” describes a broad range of uses of AI or machine learning on security data; it is not one standardized product category. A December 2025 initial preliminary draft of NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence gives examples such as flagging anomalies, correlating suspicious behavior, and monitoring behavior. These are draft opportunities, not findings from a head-to-head test of AI and traditional monitoring.

How the approaches compare
| Decision area | Traditional monitoring | AI-supported detection |
|---|---|---|
| Detection method | Uses established IDPS categories and configured monitoring of activity; SIEM can complement intrusion detection. NIST SP 800-94 (2007). | Can analyze patterns or behavior to flag anomalies and correlate suspicious activity. NIST’s December 2025 AI profile is an initial preliminary draft, not comparative performance evidence. |
| Data and visibility | Effectiveness depends on which network, wireless, host, endpoint, and other relevant activity the monitoring setup collects. | Also depends on available data. NIST’s December 2025 draft profile recommends tracking and logging AI-system traffic separately; the recommendation does not establish that any tool can see all relevant activity. |
| Analyst oversight | Alerts still need review, escalation, and connection to incident response. | AI-related findings also need explainable review and escalation. NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework offers risk-management guidance, not tool certification or a prescribed deployment. |
| Resilience | Monitoring must be checked against changing conditions and the threats relevant to the organization. | In addition to changing conditions, AI-enabled systems raise machine-learning security concerns, including evasion, model extraction, membership inference, and availability attacks identified by NIST. |
| Threat information and response | Teams can use indicators of compromise, attacker tactics and techniques, response recommendations, and incident findings to inform monitoring and action. | The same threat information and response practices remain relevant; AI analysis does not replace them. |
What AI may add—and what the evidence does not establish
AI can provide another way to analyze security data: looking for behavior that differs from expected patterns or connecting signals that may appear suspicious together. That may help surface activity for investigation, but the cited NIST examples do not demonstrate that AI will detect a given intrusion that traditional monitoring misses.
The sources reviewed do not provide a directly comparable benchmark for accuracy, detection speed, false-positive rates, staffing reduction, or cost. Those outcomes depend on the systems being compared and the conditions under which they are evaluated. Avoid treating a general claim that AI is “better” as evidence about a specific organization’s results.

Risks and governance when AI is involved
AI can be part of the monitoring capability and part of the environment that needs protecting. NIST’s AI security and resilience overview describes security concerns for AI systems, while its Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations establishes terminology for attacks and mitigations. NIST published that report in January 2024; its current overview describes a finalized 2025 update. The work describes risks and mitigations, not comparative results for commercial threat-detection products.
For broader governance, NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), published January 26, 2023, is voluntary and use-case agnostic. NIST’s current AI RMF overview says the framework is being revised. The framework does not certify a detection product or prescribe a single way to deploy one.

How to assess monitoring options
- Map the data you need to monitor. Identify which network, wireless, host or endpoint, identity, and AI-related activity is available to each system. Check whether AI-system traffic can be distinguished and logged separately, as NIST’s December 2025 draft profile recommends.
- Understand how detections are produced. Establish whether the system uses configured rules, behavior analysis, anomaly flagging, correlation, or a combination. Ask what evidence accompanies an alert and what analysts can inspect; do not infer performance from the “AI-powered” label.
- Define the human review and response path. Decide who reviews alerts, how suspicious activity is escalated, and how findings connect to incident response. Consider governance using NIST’s voluntary AI RMF, while recognizing it is guidance rather than a certification.
- Test resilience as conditions change. Evaluate how detection and response hold up as activity patterns and threats change. Where AI or machine learning is involved, include relevant risks such as evasion, model extraction, membership inference, and availability attacks in the security assessment.
- Connect alerts to threat information and learning. NIST’s Guide to Cyber Threat Information Sharing (SP 800-150), published in 2016, identifies indicators of compromise, attacker tactics and techniques, recommended response actions, and incident findings as useful cyber threat information. Consider how the monitoring process uses and shares those inputs.
NIST’s CSF 2.0 Quick-Start Guides page lists an initial public draft guide on using AI for CSF analysis and reporting, with comments open until October 15, 2026. Its scope is broader cybersecurity framework analysis, planning, implementation, and monitoring—not a vendor-level comparison of threat-detection tools.
