Choose an AI legal research platform by starting with the law and sources your work requires—not by treating one tool as universally best. Compare jurisdiction and primary-source coverage, the secondary materials you can access, how citations lead back to authority, and how the product fits your research workflow. Which platform should you use? The right choice is the one that covers your practice’s sources and lets you verify its answers efficiently.
How do the platforms compare?
The available product descriptions and comparison material do not establish a consistent, independently verified matrix of jurisdictions, source types, citation validation, or prices across these platforms. The table separates documented vendor descriptions from details a buyer should confirm; it is not an accuracy ranking.
| Platform | Legal corpus and materials | Geography and coverage | Citation workflow | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Westlaw | Thomson Reuters describes Westlaw as combining legal content, editorial expertise, research tools, analytics, and AI-assisted research. | Specific jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction and material-type coverage is not stated in the cited product description; confirm coverage for the courts, statutes, regulations, and dates you need. | Thomson Reuters describes its AI-assisted research as returning citations. Confirm whether cited passages can be opened and whether a citator or current-status workflow is included in your access. | Consider it if its legal content and editorial resources match your practice and you want AI-assisted research within that research platform. |
| CoCounsel Legal | Thomson Reuters says CoCounsel Legal reasons from Westlaw, Practical Law, and an organization’s own knowledge. | The exact jurisdictions and included materials available under a particular license are not stated in the product description; confirm them with the vendor. | Thomson Reuters says citations are linked so attorneys can inspect them. A link helps with checking, but does not establish that the authority supports the answer or remains current. | Consider it if you want a vendor-described workflow that combines Westlaw and Practical Law content with organizational knowledge. |
| Lexis+ with Protégé | Current comparison material identifies the product, but does not establish a comparable inventory of the content available for each jurisdiction or license. | Specific coverage is not stated in the available comparison material; request a jurisdiction- and source-specific account of what your license includes. | A comparable citation-linking and validation workflow is not stated in the available comparison material; test it directly. | Include it in a vendor evaluation if your firm is considering Lexis+; verify the relevant sources and workflow against your research needs. |
| vLex Vincent AI | Current comparison material identifies Vincent AI, but does not establish a comparable content inventory for this platform. | Specific jurisdiction and source coverage is not stated in the available comparison material; ask for coverage details relevant to your work. | A comparable citation-linking and validation workflow is not stated in the available comparison material; test whether citations resolve to usable authority. | Include it in a comparison when the vendor can demonstrate coverage for the jurisdictions and materials your practice needs. |
| Harvey | Current comparison material identifies Harvey, but does not establish a comparable inventory of searchable legal sources. | Specific jurisdiction and source coverage is not stated in the available comparison material; confirm it with the vendor. | A comparable citation-linking and validation workflow is not stated in the available comparison material; evaluate it on representative research questions. | Include it if its demonstrated coverage and workflow fit your practice; do not infer legal-source coverage from the product name alone. |
These descriptions do not support a universal ranking or a claim that one platform is more accurate than another. The most useful shortlist depends on your firm’s jurisdiction, practice area, existing subscriptions, and required source materials.
What should you check about coverage?
A research assistant can only retrieve legal authority available to it. Before comparing AI features, define the sources your work actually requires, then ask each vendor to map those requirements to the proposed product and license.

#1 Best Overall
- Jurisdictions: Identify the countries, states, courts, and tribunals relevant to your matters. Ask which are included and whether coverage varies by subscription.
- Primary law: Confirm access to the needed cases, statutes, regulations, and other controlling authority, including the dates covered and how updates are handled.
- Secondary sources: Check whether relevant treatises, practice guidance, headnotes, or other editorial materials are searchable and available to your users.
- Your organization’s materials: If a workflow uses internal documents or knowledge, clarify what can be connected, what the AI can search, and how that material is handled under the proposed terms.
Ask for concrete examples rather than a broad assurance of “global” or “comprehensive” coverage: a source list for your jurisdiction, a demonstration using a representative issue, and confirmation of what your firm’s license actually includes.
What do citations tell you—and what do they not tell you?
A citation link is a route to checking an answer, not proof that the answer is correct. For each proposition that matters, inspect whether the cited authority is genuine, whether the cited passage supports the proposition, whether the authority remains good law, and whether relevant contrary authority or qualifications have been missed.
Rank #2
Ask vendors to demonstrate the whole checking path: whether citations open the underlying authority, whether the relevant passage is identifiable, and whether a citator or other current-status tool is available in your access. Thomson Reuters describes CoCounsel Legal as linking citations for attorney inspection; that is a vendor description of its workflow, not independent evidence that every citation is correct or complete.
What does the published hallucination evidence show?
The abstract for Hallucination-Free? Assessing the Reliability of Leading AI Legal Research Tools reports that the study authors found hallucinations in 17%–33% of outputs from the Lexis+ AI, Westlaw AI-Assisted Research, and Ask Practical Law AI systems they evaluated in 2024. That range applies to the systems and methods tested in that study. It is not a current error rate for every version, platform, legal task, or product named in this comparison, and it does not establish a head-to-head ranking of all current tools.

The practical implication is to treat generated answers as a starting point for research. For consequential work, verify material propositions in primary sources and use the platform’s available status-checking workflow rather than relying on a citation list alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a firm evaluate and buy a platform?
- Write down the requirements. List your jurisdiction, practice area, primary authorities, secondary sources, and any organizational materials the workflow must use.
- Build a representative test set. Use realistic questions from your practice, including questions where the answer may depend on a recent decision, a narrow jurisdiction, or contrary authority.
- Test the citation trail. Open citations, inspect the cited passages, check current status, and see whether the answer identifies qualifications or conflicting authority. Do this for each platform under consideration.
- Confirm the licensed corpus and workflow. Ask the vendor to specify included sources and jurisdictions, any relevant limits, and what tools—such as citators—are available to your users.
- Compare firm-specific terms. Current, comparable prices and plan limits are not established here. Obtain quotes and licensing terms for your firm rather than relying on unsupported web estimates.
Do not select a product based only on a polished answer or an isolated citation demonstration. The useful comparison is whether it retrieves the sources your work needs and gives your lawyers an efficient way to verify each important claim.
