Use a mobile app directly for quick, predictable tasks where you want to inspect choices or a mistake could be costly. Consider an AI agent when a clear goal spans several supported apps or services and you can check the result. For money, purchases, messages, account changes, or sensitive information, stay involved and review any confirmation before the agent acts.
What is the difference between an AI agent and a mobile app?
A mobile app is a service you operate directly: you open it, choose what to do, and confirm the steps. An AI agent is defined by its ability to pursue a goal by sensing or accessing information, deciding what to do, and taking actions. It may break a request into subtasks, retrieve information, and act across services rather than simply generate a response. The UK government describes that distinction in its consumer research on agentic AI.
It is not necessarily a choice between an agent and apps. Agents may use app functions, connect to services, or interact with an app interface. Android’s developer documentation describes an evolving direction that includes AppFunctions for discrete app capabilities, remote MCP integrations, planned Computer Control for UI automation, and Agent-to-UI rendering. The page calls the work early-stage: these platform directions do not mean every phone, app, or user has all the capabilities today. See Android’s documentation on connecting apps to its intelligence system.
When should you use an app yourself?
- The task is short and routine. Opening the relevant app yourself is often the more straightforward choice for a predictable action such as checking a balance or changing a simple setting.
- You want to judge the options directly. An app lets you inspect available choices and decide between them without relying on an agent’s interpretation.
- The app or action is not supported by the agent. Agent capabilities are limited to supported apps, services, and actions; direct app use avoids trying to delegate an unsupported task.
- A wrong action could have serious consequences. When a task involves money, an account, or sensitive information, doing it yourself may make it easier to verify each step.
This is a practical recommendation, not evidence that apps always outperform agents. The case for direct app use is strongest when the task is simple or the cost of an error is high.

When can an AI agent help?
An agent may be worth trying when a goal requires coordination across several steps or services—for example, gathering information from supported sources and preparing a result for you to review. Its potential advantage is handling coordination, not a proven guarantee of faster or more accurate work.
UK government guidance on introducing user-defined automation recommends starting with tasks that are simple, measurable, and predictable. Before delegating, make sure the goal is specific enough to check and that the agent supports the exact apps and actions involved. If it cannot show a result you can verify, the convenience may not be worth the uncertainty.

How to decide for a task involving money or personal information
Compare the two approaches using the task itself rather than assuming one method is best for everything.
| What to check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Complexity | Is this one predictable action, or does it involve several steps? |
| App support | Does the agent support the exact app and action, not merely a similar task? |
| Cost of an error | Could a mistake trigger a payment, send a message, alter an account, or expose sensitive information? |
| Review | Can you inspect what the agent plans to do and confirm the result before it is final? |
| Permissions | What apps, accounts, or information can the agent access, and can you narrow that access? |
| Data handling | What activity, conversation history, or screenshots are retained, and which settings control their use? |
For consequential actions, treat the agent as an assistant rather than an unattended operator: review the details, take control when needed, and confirm only what you intend. Google says Gemini may pause for user control or confirmation for actions such as signing in, entering payment information, finalizing a transaction, sending communications, or changing delivery details. Its guidance for multi-step tasks in select Android apps also warns that errors or prompt injection can lead to unintended actions.

What are the current limits of mobile agents?
Consumer-facing agents remain bounded. UK government consumer research describes current deployments as generally narrow, with limited authority and human escalation common. It identifies possible benefits such as reduced friction and time, but says those depend on reliable performance and responsible deployment; it also notes risks including errors, manipulation, reduced consumer agency, and opaque incentives.
For Android screen automation specifically, Google states: “Screen automation in Android apps is a beta feature.” It is available only for selected apps, and Google lists possible mistakes such as tapping the wrong item, making or misconfiguring a purchase, or reporting a task complete when it is unfinished. The company advises monitoring the task and cautions that safeguards cannot prevent every risk. Beta availability and supported apps may change, so check the current Gemini Help page for the feature you intend to use.

Platform plans and vendor security descriptions are not independent proof that automation will work reliably in every situation. Android’s developer page labels its broader agent direction as early-stage and includes preview capabilities. Google has described design intentions for Gemini Intelligence such as granular opt-in controls, access limited to allowed apps, purchase confirmation, progress visibility, and prompt-injection defenses in its Android security post. Those are Google’s descriptions of its product architecture, not a guarantee of universal effectiveness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check about privacy and data retention?
Privacy practices depend on the specific assistant and service. Check the permissions you grant, the activity or conversation history retained, whether screenshots are saved, and any settings that affect data use. Do not assume that a control or retention policy in one product applies to another.

For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent help page says chats, browsing history, and screenshots are kept in conversation history until you delete them. It also describes plan-specific data-use provisions and a setting to turn off model improvement. Review the current terms and controls for the particular service and plan you use.
Is an AI agent faster or more accurate than an app?
There is no established general head-to-head result showing that agents are faster or more accurate than apps across everyday tasks. A multi-step workflow could reduce the effort of coordinating supported services, but agents can also misinterpret a request or take an unintended action. For a task you do often, compare both methods on that specific task: note the steps you still have to perform, how much review is required, and whether the outcome is correct. Treat product capability descriptions as claims about what a service can do, not proof of comparative performance.
