AI shopping agents could change which businesses guide shoppers to products, control checkout, and keep the customer relationship. That creates possible gains in discovery and sales for retailers—but also risks around platform access, fees, loyalty, data, and fulfillment. Meta says its Muse agent can browse and make purchases with user approval; that product description does not establish broad adoption or any effect on a retailer’s earnings or share price.
What an AI shopping agent changes
A conventional online shopping journey typically runs from a search, marketplace, or retailer app to a product page and checkout. An agent can sit between the shopper’s intention and those steps: the shopper describes what they want, the agent searches or compares options, and it may complete some of the work—including, in some cases, a purchase after approval.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That changes the route to a retailer’s checkout, not the basic economics of selling a product. A retailer still has to offer something the shopper wants, make the item available, collect payment, deliver it, and handle returns or service. The strategic question is who controls the moments before and during the transaction: the retailer, an outside agent, or both.
What Meta says Muse can do
Meta announced Muse on September 8, 2026, describing it as an agent that can open a browser, fill out forms, negotiate, and transact. Meta says users approve actions such as purchases, checkout can use Stripe Link, and Shop Pay is planned. The company said Muse was rolling out in the United States through iOS, Android, and the web. These are Meta’s product descriptions, not independent evidence that Muse works reliably across retailers or has driven meaningful purchase volume.

So, can AI agents shop for you? Meta says Muse can perform browser-based shopping tasks and complete purchases subject to user approval. That is a product capability claim, not proof that every retailer permits access or that the agent can reliably complete every transaction.
Retailers can open the door—or keep control
Outside agents can potentially introduce shoppers to a retailer, but a retailer must decide whether and how to let them interact with its site, product information, accounts, and checkout. Recent examples point to different approaches rather than a settled winning strategy.

| Amazon and Muse | Axios reported on September 21, 2026, that Amazon had blocked Muse from browsing and buying on its platform. Axios reported that Amazon said it had not authorized Muse to access customer accounts, scrape data, or process transactions, and cited security and user-experience concerns. | Retailers can restrict a particular outside agent and state conditions for participation. This report is not a legal finding and does not establish that all AI agents are blocked. |
| Walmart and ChatGPT | Walmart’s October 2025 partnership announcement described planned shopping through ChatGPT using Instant Checkout and Walmart’s own assistant, Sparky. OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 update described an in-ChatGPT Walmart app experience that moves shoppers from discovery into a Walmart environment with account linking, loyalty, and Walmart payments. | A retailer can cooperate with an external discovery platform while also building retailer-controlled shopping tools and transaction experiences. |
Walmart executive Daniel Danker described the March 2026 launch as combining conversational AI with Walmart’s retail experience. That is the company’s explanation of the partnership, not evidence that it has produced a particular financial result.
How agentic shopping could affect retail businesses
The effect on a retailer depends on whether agents add valuable customers and orders, and on what the retailer gives up or spends to serve them. The same agent could help a retailer appear in a shopper’s consideration set while making it harder for the retailer to own the customer relationship.

Potential benefits
- More discovery: An agent may surface a retailer’s products to shoppers who would not have started in that retailer’s app or website.
- More completed orders: If an agent reduces friction between product discovery and checkout, it could help convert shopper intent into a transaction.
- Broader reach: A retailer that makes its catalog and ordering process usable by outside agents may have more routes to a sale.
Potential costs and risks
- Customer disintermediation: If the agent owns the interaction, a retailer may get the order without owning the discovery, preference, or repeat-engagement relationship.
- Less control over data and loyalty: Account linking, purchase records, and loyalty benefits may be managed inside a retailer’s environment—or mediated by an outside platform.
- Fees and transaction terms: An external agent or checkout arrangement could affect payment costs, merchant terms, and the retailer’s control over the purchase experience. The financial terms of the cited examples are not established here.
- Access and reliability: A retailer may restrict an agent, or an agent may not be able to use a retailer’s catalog, account, or checkout consistently.
- Execution costs: Integrations, accurate product data, fulfillment, returns, and customer service all have to work. Incremental orders are not necessarily profitable orders.
What the market-size estimates do—and do not—say
McKinsey & Company’s 2025 analysis estimated a $900 billion to $1 trillion opportunity in U.S. B2C retail by 2030 under moderate assumptions about AI discovery and merchant readiness. It also estimated $3 trillion to $5 trillion globally by 2030 for goods, excluding services and B2B commerce. These are scenario estimates about potential agentic-commerce activity, not revenue forecasts for a particular company, a measure of realized sales, or an estimate of stock returns.
Walmart reported $681 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue and approximately 270 million weekly customers and members in 2025. Those company-reported figures indicate scale; they are not agentic-commerce revenue or a count of AI shoppers. A large retailer may have resources to build integrations and fulfillment capabilities, but scale alone does not show whether a new shopping channel will be incremental or profitable.

A practical checklist for evaluating retail stocks
Rather than treating an AI product announcement or market-size scenario as a stock signal, assess each retailer’s strategy and look for evidence in company disclosures and results. The following questions help separate a plausible opportunity from a demonstrated financial contribution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Access policy: Does the retailer permit third-party agents, require permission, or keep transactions within its own channels? What conditions govern account access, catalog use, and checkout?
- Customer ownership: Who controls identity, loyalty benefits, and the post-purchase relationship? Can the retailer recognize and serve an agent-mediated customer directly?
- Catalog readiness: Are product details, availability, pricing, and other shopping information structured and current enough for agents to represent them accurately?
- Discovery partnerships: Can the retailer appear in external agent recommendations, and does it also have retailer-controlled tools for shopping and repeat engagement?
- Checkout economics: Who controls payment, and what fees, terms, or other costs apply? Do disclosures show the retailer retaining enough of the transaction’s value?
- Fulfillment and service: Can the retailer deliver the order, manage returns, and resolve problems at a cost and service level that supports repeat purchases?
- Financial proof: Are management disclosures or reported results tying agent-driven activity to incremental orders, conversion, basket size, margins, or customer acquisition costs? Separate measured results from plans and projections.
Amazon’s reported restriction of Muse and Walmart’s described integrations illustrate different choices on access and control. They do not establish that one approach will win. A closed approach may preserve more control over customer experience but limit participation in outside discovery; a partnership may extend reach while adding dependence on another platform. The right assessment depends on the company’s actual economics and execution.
What investors can conclude today
The available announcements and reporting establish that agentic shopping is a strategic issue retailers are addressing: Meta has described Muse’s shopping capabilities, Axios reported Amazon’s restriction, and Walmart and OpenAI have described a partnership that combines external discovery with Walmart-controlled elements. They do not establish that Muse has materially changed any named retailer’s reported financial results or stock valuation.
For retail-stock analysis, treat agentic commerce as a developing route to market, not a stand-alone buy or sell signal. Watch for evidence that a retailer is gaining profitable, incremental demand while protecting its customer relationship and delivering orders efficiently.
