Many cryptocurrency transfers can be traced across public blockchains, but that does not mean a ledger automatically reveals the person behind an address. That distinction is central to the warning crypto figures made after masked attackers tried to abduct a woman and child in Paris on May 13, 2025. Reporting described the woman as the daughter of a crypto entrepreneur; the available accounts do not establish that blockchain analysis solved the attempted kidnapping.
What happened in Paris
On May 13, 2025, masked attackers tried to force a woman and child into a van on a Paris street. The attempt failed after the woman’s partner fought back and a nearby shop owner intervened with a fire extinguisher, according to Ars Technica’s May 15 report. Early reports described the woman as the daughter of a crypto entrepreneur. In its report carrying Reuters material, RTÉ said Reuters could not independently verify her identity at the time. Later coverage identified the father as Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium; that later identification should not be mistaken for confirmation in the earliest accounts. RTÉ’s May 2025 report
The attempt came amid other violent incidents involving people connected to cryptocurrency in France. The Associated Press reported the January abduction of Ledger co-founder David Balland and his wife, and the May rescue of a crypto entrepreneur’s father after a ransom demand. Those cases provide context, but do not establish that the May 13 attempt involved the same group or that cryptocurrency transfers motivated it. Associated Press coverage
What “traceable” means for cryptocurrency
On a public blockchain, transaction records can show the movement of funds from one address to another. Analysts may follow that trail across addresses, which is why public-ledger transfers are not inherently invisible. But an address is not, by itself, a name. Connecting an address to a person can depend on other evidence, such as exchange records, devices, communications, witnesses or investigative work.

That is the distinction behind the warning attributed to Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin in Ars Technica’s report: “For whatever reason, there is a perception that’s out there that crypto is an asset that is untraceable, and that really lends itself to criminals acting in a certain way.” Levin also said: “Apparently, the [knowledge] that crypto is not untraceable hasn’t been received by some of the organized crime groups that are actually perpetrating these attacks, and some of them are concentrated in, you know, France, but not exclusively.”
These statements are not proof that every cryptocurrency, service or transaction offers the same degree of visibility. Privacy features and the route funds take can affect what is observable. Nor does seeing a transfer on a ledger, on its own, establish who controlled the address or why the transfer occurred.

What the reporting does—and does not—show about investigations
The available reports do not say that a blockchain analytics company traced ransom funds from the May 13 attempt or identified its assailants through ledger analysis. A separate Le Monde account of a related case describes investigators reviewing a judicial file and tracing phone lines, illustrating how communications evidence and conventional police work can feature in an investigation alongside financial analysis. Le Monde’s report
So “traceable” is a warning about the evidence a public ledger may preserve, not a promise that investigators can instantly identify a suspect, recover funds or solve a crime from blockchain data alone. The reports are from May 2025; they do not establish what later investigative or court developments may have occurred.

Why the warning matters to crypto holders
Public transaction histories can make it possible to analyze where funds moved, even when an address does not display an owner’s identity. That can undermine the assumption that cryptocurrency is automatically anonymous. At the same time, a visible transaction trail is only one possible source of evidence; attributing it to a person requires a separate evidentiary link.
The Paris attempt and other reported cases also prompted discussion of personal safety among French officials and members of the crypto community. The incidents should not be treated as a quantified trend: the cited reports describe individual cases, not a reliable statistic measuring how often crypto-related kidnappings occur.
